For anyone still having this issue, give this a shot:
First, make sure you have iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support Installed.
1. Go to Device Manager
2. Locate your Apple device (mine was under Portable Devices. It’s very possible it’s somewhere else for you.)
3. Right click it and select «Update Device Driver.»
4. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Devices\Support\Drivers and select that folder
5. Hit next. The driver should install and you’ll see «Apple Mobile Device USB Driver» under the «Universal Serial Device USB Driver» section in Device Manager.
I hope I was able to help anybody who is still having this issue.

Done it. Well. until I got to the part where it wanted me to disable USBs that would also disable my keyboard and mouse functions on my laptop. Kinda don’t have an extra keyboard or mouse lying around to connect up to. Oh, and it stated earlier to disconnect anything connected to the USBs anyway, so exactly how would I connect them if I can’t have anything connected with the USBs? Aaaanyway. I’m just about to rip my hair out.

Keyboard and trackpad are built-in. You cannot disable them. They want you to remove third-party peripherals.

Oh. OK. they must have meant if you’re using a desktop pc. Those articles are so confusing if you’re not an expert. lol. Thanks. Guess I’ll give it another try. ;O) Oh wait. Yeah. I’ve done the Stop & Start service thingy for bothe the Apple service and the IPod service to no avail. The article I was referring to was the one about trying to find the missing mobile device USB driver and repairing or reinstalling it. That’s the one that’s messing me up.

dont download any of the above as they are possibly viruses that can harm your computer. please download the original ITUNES and extract it into WinRar, then drag the apple mobile support driver thing into your desktop, and proceed to installing it from there

For all guys who are dealing with the problem about AMDS driver, I come with workaround.
After many hours to uninstall & reinstall, execute command line, write log, etc. that job did not help.
I installed the iTune on windows 8 x64 (on 2 PCs), and iTune has not been installed before, but it still got error around the Apple USB driver missing. ( even though the PC detects the iPhone USB, but the iTune does not).
1. Download & install Moborobo application http://91.pandaapp.com/pcsuite/
This application installer will call downloading and installing of iTune, but it get all things done perfectly automatically once you click OK. The problem with driver should have be solved.
2. Other workaround, a application does not require iTune, it works awesome.
I ussually use it. The minor issue is this application which are running the Chinese language is default setting, you just click on the circle icon on top left, and move cursor on menu to change to «English».
Note: Please do not misunderstand, I did not PR for above applications, and I do not get anything from that, as I said, I went through many support URLs from Apple site and Microsoft, but they did not help, and I found above solutions.
I’ve installed both of application, but I think you just need one of them.

I had exactly the same issue, resolved right now !
Just be sure date and time preferences in both your macbook/imac and iphone/ipad are synched.

I’ve got the exact same problem as described by the OP.
My iTunes and Mac are both up to date.
Aug 4, 2018 7:56 AM
Everybody has the same issue but has anyone found a solution??
Aug 11, 2018 3:19 PM
I have the same problem. iPhone 6S, iOS 11.4.1 and IMac with OS10.13.6.
Occasionally, iTunes on the iMac will recognize my iPhone, and sync with it. But it never gives me the option to add photos or to add tunes, albums or playlists from iTunes.
In contrast, Photos has no problem recognizing my iPhone and downloading photos from it. this makes me think it is a problem with iTunes software.

The dialogue box appears when I plug in my iPhone 8 and it would seem like it is prompt from iTunes. When I click on «learn more» it takes me to this page: If you see «Software update is required to connect to your iOS device» on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch — Apple Suppo… the popup window is also depicted on this page in a .png
When I click on install then it tells me the software is not avaiable on the server.
The phone and my Mac are on the latests versions and they seem to be syncing just fine.

I have the same problem. iOS is updated, itunes is updated, my phone jack is clean and charging via USB works if it’s plugged into the wall or if I switch operating systems (e.g. to linux). This appears to be a mac problem and the prompt saying to download software, then failing to do so, only makes it more frustrating.

I’ve got the same problem since a few months, since I updated to High Sierra. I’ve updated last week to Mojave, and the issue was still there.
I’ve tried changing the cable to an official one, then to a licensed one, then I replaced my iPhone 7 with a new iPhone X, then I upgraded the OS to Mojave. Nothing worked.
The other day I did a search in google again, and I found a post speaking about an issue with Xcode. The post suggested as a solution to download Xcode and open it. The first time Xcode is run, it asks to install some components, and some if them are related to iOS. Actually, if iTunes is opened at the time of run Xcode for the first time, installing those support components will close and reopen iTunes.
Since I did so, I haven’t had the issue anymore. I hope this helps!

I started getting this message when I switched t a new lightning cable. The connection to from my iMac to my iPhone X and 8 would pop on and off and I would get the message to install new software which would fail to install. I switched lightning cables again and the connection problems stopped and no more message to install new software.

I have an iPhone 7+ which is running iOS 11.4.1
I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2013) running High Sierra 10.13.6
iTunes is version 12.8
I am receiving the same error message as well as the notification the software is not available on server.

Same issue — all updates current and time/date synced. Switching cables resolved it for me (although I had to force quit iTunes)
Sep 5, 2018 3:32 PM
Same issue here and, I had a support technician with me, on chat, when it happened. I was trying to perform an action with my iPad. Same situation and, the support technician couldn’t do anything about it. Pretty sad situation when you can’t even get a technician who can fix a problem.

Look back at the post in this series by rbcmsa. something like that. Anyways, they are pictures of the exact same dialog boxes that appear when I am in itunes trying to update an ipad. The ipad recovery process is crap. You can’t go back and, you can’t always get the 2gig download without three tries. Then, everytime you think you may have bricked your ipad after four tries of updating, the sixth try works. Yes, sixth.
If I ask the imac to go looking for updates, everything is current. So again back to the original post. What is this update?

[SOLVED] Hey guys, i had this problem too for a few days while trying to connect my iPhone 8 to iTunes. As you guessed it, click on install -> downloading item -> Installation failed. i am running the latest iOS 12.1 on my iPhone 8, latest MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 on my 27″ iMac late 2013, and iTunes 12.9.0.164. All my Apps are updated as well.
Called Apple support, was told to Reset NVRAM and Systems Management Controller (SMC), and to check that my date and time was set correctly on my iMac. Was told to try different cables to connect my iPhone 8 to iMac, used my old original apple cable from my iPhone 6. All these DID NOT WORK.
I downloaded Xcode as well. DID NOT WORK too.
So i read here that some guys used different cables (no brand) and it worked. So i remembered i have another original apple cable in my car, gave it a last try and this time it WORKED. Finally i could connect my iphone 8 to iTunes. Previously i could have used my wife’s iPhone 7Plus cable and it did not work.
So the moral of the story is -> try using different cables and try different methods because YOU NEVER KNOW!
