21st September 2017

Whether you just got your first one, or have been getting inundated with No Caller ID calls, each call is a frustrating experience of wondering who’s on the other end and why they’re calling to harass you. You can start a free 7-day trial of TrapCall to begin unmasking these No Caller ID calls today, or, read below to learn more about these pesky calls and exactly how TrapCall solves the problem.
What is a “No Caller ID” call?
A No Caller ID call is a regular phone call that has purposefully had identifying information stripped from it. These are also called blocked, hidden, masked, or unknown calls. “No Caller ID” is typically what you’ll see on the caller ID for a blocked call on an iPhone, but other phones may use a different term in the caller ID. One of the most common ways of placing a No Caller ID call is by dialing *67 before a phone number when making a call, as this automatically blocks your caller ID to the call recipient. Usually, this is done because whoever is calling you doesn’t want to be tracked.
In addition, telemarketers use No Caller ID when they do not want to get reported for conducting their marketing illegally. Because the people they call won’t see their caller ID or possess the ability to call them back, they think they won’t get caught. Calling from a blocked number or a spoofed number is also a common tactic to attempt to steal victims’ personal identity, money, and precious time.
Often times, people who have been blocked from calling someone, perhaps due to a breakup, harassment, or some type of illegal activity, will call them using No Caller ID so that their call gets through. Blocking caller ID allows the caller to continue making these unwanted calls, as the recipient has no way to block them or reveal who the caller without a third party Android or iOS app.
How do I unmask & block No Caller ID calls on iPhone to find out who’s calling?
TrapCall is the best and most reliable way to unmask No Caller ID calls. We’ve been unmasking blocked calls for tens of thousands of users since 2007, and we have a 4.5 star rating on the App Store to show for it.
With TrapCall, you can:
- Unmask the phone number, name, address, and even a photo of who’s calling from “No Caller ID”
- Blacklist these unmasked numbers so that they’ll hear this message when they call: “The number that you’re trying to reach has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”
- Plus, we offer reverse phone number lookups, automatic spam call blocking, and even incoming call recording.
What’s the difference between “No Caller ID”, “Private Caller“, “Unknown Caller”, “Blocked Call”, “Masked Call”, etc. ?
Functionally, there is no difference between all of these terms. Traditionally different phone carrier & manufacturers have used different terminology to refer to the lack of Caller ID. All of these terms fundamentally mean the same thing, that a caller is calling you from a masked caller ID.

How does TrapCall & it’s No Caller ID Call Unmasking & Blocking work?
Setting up and using TrapCall is easy. After signing up for a TrapCall subscription, you’ll need to activate the service on your phone. This process takes less than 5 minutes, and we’ll walk you through every step. Once the service is activated, you’ll just need to decline any No Caller ID calls you receive. When you decline those calls, they’ll be forwarded to us, we’ll work our unmasking magic, and then we’ll forward them back to you with the revealed number.
Plus, TrapCall allows you to go beyond unmasking these unwanted calls.
After seeing the revealed number, along with the name, address, and photo of the caller when that information is available, you’re in control. If you want to make sure the caller can’t leave you any more voicemails, you can add their number to your blacklist. If it’s a more serious situation, you can bring that information to the police to show who’s harassing you. With TrapCall’s Ultimate Plan, you can even record the harassing calls you’re receiving for further evidence.
With TrapCall, you’ll have the power to always know who’s calling and stop the harassment.
How do I decline a No Caller ID call on iPhone?
If your phone is locked when you receive a No Caller ID call, you’ll need to press the lock button twice to decline the call. The first press silences the call, the second press declines it. The lock button is on the right side of the phone on the iPhone 6, 6S, and 7 models, and it’s on the top of the phone for all other iPhones.
If your phone is unlocked when you receive a No Caller ID call, you’ll see the red decline button on your screen and can simply tap it to decline the call.
What if I get a call from an “Unknown” number?
Sometimes blocked calls may show up on your phone as “Unknown” rather than “No Caller ID.” If the caller is hiding their number using *67, or a similar method, TrapCall will have no trouble unmasking the blocked call. However, if the caller is calling from an international or VoIP number, it’s possible that their “Unknown” number cannot be unmasked.

How to block unknown callers on an Android phone
The more we use our smartphones the more likely we are to get cold calls from companies, or even scammers, which can be very annoying not to mention inconvenient. And as our address books grow, the chances of getting legitimate calls from Unknown Callers is getting less and less.
Fortunately, there is an easy way to block the dreaded unknown caller on an Android phone. In this tutorial we will show you the easy way—it works on any Android phone, and will even block text messages from unknown numbers (although this feature only works on Android 4.3 and earlier devices).
Download Mr Number
Most Android phones don’t have call blocking built in. If this is the case for you then download the free Mr Number app from the Play Store.
Open the app and wait a few seconds for it to initialise. It’ll ask you to verify your number and country, but you can skip that if you wish. You will need to do it to use the number lookup feature.
You’ll now see a list of all the recent calls and texts that you have received. If the caller was in your address book then you’ll see their name and photo (if you’ve got it); if not, you will just see the number.
Lookup Number
Tap on one of the entries. If it is marked as an Unknown Number tap the Lookup Number option to search the web and try and find who called—you get 20 free lookups per month, or more through an in-app purchase.
You can also send a text to or directly call the number using the righter most icons at the bottom of the screen.
Block a number
To block a number tap the Block icon in the bottom left of the screen.
In the window that opens choose whether you want to automatically hangup when you receive a call from this number, or whether you want to send it through to your voicemail.
Tap Mark as spam if it is a junk caller—that will add the number to the Mr Number database of spammers—and add a comment, such as the company that was calling, if you wish. Tap Done to finish.
Unblock a number
To unblock a number tap the Blocklist icon at the top right of the app’s home screen. In the Hangup and Voicemail tabs you can see a list of all the numbers you have blocked. Tap the X icon next to any of them to unblock it.
Block all unknown numbers
You can also block every Unknown caller. Tap the Blocklist icon from the main screen of the app. Swipe to the Voicemail tab and tap Send someone to voicemail. From the options that are listed choose All numbers not in my contacts. This means calls from your contacts will go through as normal, while everyone else will go straight to your voicemail.
You can do the same using the Hangup option, although this should be used more sparingly since not every unknown caller will be a spam call and you may not want to block them from calling altogether.

Since MIUI 12 doesn’t have Xiaomi dialer app any more (now it comes with the Phone app by Google pre-installed), you can’t block calls from strangers, unless you install some third-party application. Only MIUI 12 ROMs for China have Xiaomi’s dialer app.

Third-party Apps (Samsung Galaxy)
As you might know, neither Samsung Galaxy nor OnePlus devices don’t have the ability to block numbers of strangers in their built-in native dialers. For such unique phones and tablets the only option is to use a third-party call managing app. We can suggest the Call Blocker by Vlad Lee that can be easily found in the Google Play Store.
All you need to do is:
- Install the app.
- Launch it.
- Give it all required permissions.
- Go to the Blocking tab.
- Make sure the Blocking itself is toggled on.
- Activate the Unknown numbers (Block all numbers except contacts) option:
Once you’ve configured the app, all calls from strange numbers will be rejected.
According to user feedback as of May 2020, this app doesn’t cope with call filtering on OnePlus devices. We’d appreciate if you gave us your feedback concerning the issue in the comments.
What About Text Messages from Non-Contacts?
Very simple, but it is necessary to mention. If your phone has a feature to filter calls from strangers, it usually has the same options for text messages:
Some phones support blocking texts by keyword:
But here it is worth being more careful. The fact is that if you block text messages from unfamiliar senders, you run the risk of missing, say, a verification code from Google or another service and you will not be able to log in or confirm some important action. These are just a couple of examples. There are others.
Therefore, when it comes to text messages, it is best to block individual senders, and not filter out all SMS from unfamiliar numbers. As you might already know from another guide, if you blocked a specific phone number in your phone app, text messages will be also blocked.
Wrapping Up
Hopefully, now you know how to get rid of annoying calls from scammers, spammers, telemarketers and other unwanted strangers on your smartphone. If you have more information regarding the topic of blocking calls from non-contacts on Android, feel free to share it in the comments. Good luck!
