Tek Eye

Android Studio has the built in Image Asset utility for generating a new launcher icon. A launcher icon is put on to an Android device when your App is installed. A good icon helps identify your App. It provides the chance to make a first good impression. The Image Asset utility generates several icon sizes to support the wide range of screen densities that exist in the Android world.

To start the Image Asset utility highlight the app folder in the project explorer and use the File menu or context menu (normally right-click). Then select New then Image Asset. The utility can be used to generate Action Bar, Tab and Notification Icons.

The Generate Icons dialog has several options for the launcher icon set. The icon can be generated from several built in cliparts, from entering a simple text string, or by selecting a simple image. If using the in built clipart it is shown on the button next to the Clipart label. Several adjustments can be made: trimming transparent space, padding, foreground and background colors, croping, shape (square, circle, horizontal or vertical rectangle, none), and adding a corner fold (dog ear).

If selecting an external image to use for the icon it will not load if it is too large. If so reduce its size in an external program like paint.net or Gimp. The generated icons are placed into the correct folders in the res directory (overwriting the existing default icons).

The installed App chooses the correct icon for the screen density (the icon for a low-density screen is not generated, if it is required copy one of the generated icon and resize it to 36×36 pixels and save it to a mipmap-ldpi directory).

App Icon Generator

Make App Icons

Hotpot.ai created a free app icon generator to convert icons into the required sizes for different platforms: iOS, Android, Unity, Microsoft, Chrome, Firefox, macOS, and more. Our app icon maker is online, easy to use, and aims to supports every digital product, including mobile apps, browser extensions, desktop apps, Unity games, these amazing widgets, and more.

Why, Apple, Why?

Creating mobile and desktop apps is a complex and challenging endeavor, but one with incredible upside. There are nearly 4 billion people in the world with smartphones and almost 1 billion personal computers in use globally. The market is massive if you can produce unique software that addresses a common desire. Unfortunately, the competition is also extensive — as are the hoops Apple, Google, Unity, Microsoft, and other platform owners make developers jump through.

As if conceiving a good idea then coding it into reality weren’t hard enough, these tech overlords force sleep-deprived developers to undertake several annoying tasks that should be automated by Xcode, Android Studio, or other IDEs. One of the most soul-sucking tasks is generating app icons. Because apps get distributed to devices with different resolutions and may get surfaced in different contexts (e.g., home screen versus a search result), Lord Apple and others require apps to include multiple sizes of the same app icon.

Simple, right? These companies are flush with billions of dollars and legions of brilliant developers, so surely they streamlined the process for third-party developers so they can concentrate on minor details like, um, making something users love. Surely you would be wrong.

For instance, Apple requires 1x, 2x, and 3x versions of all icons and images bundled inside each iOS app with no automatic mechanism for making them. Google imposes similar requirements for Google Play apps, mandating icons called drawables that range from 0.75x to 4.0x the base app icon size. Not content to make only Android developers miserable, Google kindy imposes icon requirements for Chrome extensions as well. Unity unsurprisingly maintains its reputation as the leading cause of developer suffering by layering inscrutable documentation on top of maddening demands. But honestly, would it still be a proper Unity game if the dev experience was clear and painless? Even Firefox, the vanguard of developer freedom and progress, forces people to create separate icon sizes.

Resizing icons is a massive waste of developer time and energy, so this compelled us to create a free app icon maker. Hopefully, you find it helpful.

App Store & Google Play Store Petition

Please sign this petition to encourage Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai to slash the fees for the App Store and Google Play store to 10%. This meticulously crafted petition aims to support indie and mobile developers who generate less than $1m (USD) in annual revenue. If we stand together and yell loud enough, they will hear us. Join the movement.

If enough people join, perhaps we can expand the petition to also encompass the Unity Store.

Android app icon generator

I hope you enjoyed this tool. If you like «buy me a coffee» so I can continue to support and improve this tool

Tutorial on how to generate your icon for iOS and Android Expand

As you know, the process to create icons for yor apps for Android and iOS requires a lot of time.

You have to resize your icon to adapt to the different screen size of Android and iOS screens.

Drag your icon over the grey box with the text: “Drag and drop your icon here”. You will see a preview of your image. Now press the “Download” button to download your icons.

After extracting the zip file, you can simply copy the Android icons in your Android project and the iOS icons in your iOS project. The iOS icons contain also the Contents.json file so if you copy the icons and this file inside your Assets.xcassets folder, Xamarin (or xcode) will automatically recognize all the icons for the different sizes (so cool!).

For Android there are 5 resolutions that you should consider and for each resolution in your Android project there are 5 folder:

  • mipmap-mdpi
  • mipmap-hdpi
  • mipmap-xhdpi
  • mipmap-xxhdpi
  • mipmap-xxxhdpi

In the next image you can see the resources of an Android project (using Xamarin under Visual Studio 2017):

The idea is to generate an icon for each folder, from the smallest one (mipmap-mdpi) to the biggest (mipmap-xxxhdpi). Doing this you will be sure to have the best icon for each screen resolution, consuming the minimum amount of memory.

For iOS there are even more icon resolution to create, 25 to be precise.

In the next image you can see the Asset Catalog of an iOS project (using Xamarin under Visual Studio 2017):

In total, given your original icon, you should resize and generate 30 icons to consider all the resolutions on Android and iOS.

At this point you have 2 options:

  1. Spend 1 hour to manually resize your icons
  2. Use Icon Generator that automatically will create your icons in just few seconds.

How to use Icon generator

Drag your icon over the grey box with the text: “ Drag and drop your icon here ”. You will see a preview of your icon. Select if you want to generate the icons for Android and/or iOS (by default the tools will generate the icons for Android and iOS). Now press the “Download” button to download your icons. In just an instant your icons will be ready to be downloaded inside a zip file.

Inside the zip file, the icons are already their correct folders, so you just need to copy these folders inside your Android and iOS projects.

For iOS together with the icons, is also present the file Contents.json. This file is used by iOS to define the Asset Catalog content. It means that if you copy the icons and this file inside your Asset Catalog folder, your project will automatically recognize all the icons.

I hope you enjoy this free tool and if you like I’d appreciate if you could buy me a coffee 🙂
