4 Bugs Currently Annoying Android Developers (And Their Solutions)

Table of Contents

TL;DR — This article covers 4 common Android bugs and their solutions.

Here are four bugs which many Android developers are facing right now (along with their solutions). If you have a bug that isn’t listed here, consider pairing up with Android expert here on AirPair.

##2 Error: could not access the package manager. Is the system running?

You may have gotten this error while attempting to run an Android application on an emulator or device using Android Studio. The most common cause of this error is simple: You have to manually unlock your Android Virtual Device by swiping the «lock» icon on the screen. Security measures prevent the emulator from letting you connect the debugger before doing this.

##3 Error: You are using an old, unsupported version of Gradle

You may have run into this error message or some other variant of «the project is using an unsupported version of the android Gradle plug-in» while trying to import an Eclipse project into Android Studio. Another common variant is: «Gradle version 1.6 is required. Current version is 1.9.«

There are several possible reasons for this error and some readily available fixes. If you are exporting, Eclipse may have generated older Gradle 1.6 files so lets first try to fix that possibility. O pen up the «build.gradle» file produced by Eclipse and alter this line:

That lets Android Studio know we are targeting Gradle 1.9 instead of Gradle 1.6. Try importing the module again and see if it works this time.

Another thing to look at is to make sure that your copy of Android Studio is targeting the proper version of Gradle. To check, look under Android Studio → Preferences → Gradle and see what version of Gradle is installed on your system.

At this point you should probably shooting for Gradle 1.9. You may need to download and install a newer version of Gradle and manually point Android Studio at it using those same preferences.

##4 Genymotion can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer

This is an easy one — simply Control + Click or «Right Click» on the Genymotion application you installed and select «Open.» OSX / Mavericks is temperamental due to security reasons and this way of opening the file indicates that you are willing to accept the risks of opening the file.

Android 12 Official Release ..5 bugs and fixes.

As it stands with the design of Android 12, I agree. However, if that day/date line was removed (as the temp line was able to be removed) then it could be used. It was usable in Android 11, as shown in the double screen shot showing 12 on the left; 11 on the right.
Maybe not all the way to the top but a good ways to the top the widget for day/date/temp was a heck of a lot higher on the screen in previous OS versions.

And because that top area cannot be used, only two rows of apps can be shown on the main screen.

Sure looks to me that Android 12’s design uses way too much space for nothing!

This is a design fault IN MY OPINION; however, at least that was a design, I’m sure all the problems with apps was not.

OVERLY COMPLAINING? Believe me when I say I am also surprised since for the many years I have used Android this is the first time this BS has happened.

Visual voicemail does not work.
poweramp not working correctly, but at least it works.
Calls blacklist keeps closing
Google fit keeps closing
That’s just to name a few.

AND ALL WERE WORKING LAST WEEK WITH NO PROBLEMS ON ANDROID 11.
IF THIS IS OVERLY COMPLAINING SO BE IT. HOWEVER, I WOULD HAVE TO THINK IF IT WAS HAPPENING TO YOU, YOU WOULD BE FIRST IN LINE TO COMPLAIN.

I won’t even go into the design of the new OS cause that is subjective and some are OVERLY COMPLAINING, SOME AREN’T. I just figure that if google gave a damn about their customers (blind followers) they might give them a switch to turn back to previous display. Maybe give every one a way to revert back to previous OS level.

I understand that there are minor glitches with the OS. Depends on your opinion of what a minor glitch is. For example, in Android 10 & 11 betas my Pixel 3XL sucked horribly for me for Android Auto, and battery issues. However, once those OS’s became stable, all those issues vanished. you expect to experience issues in a beta. Unfortunately, for some reason, not everyone has the same bug and issues and that is why it’s soo important to report all of them to the development team.

Now, as far as the OS design, the only thing that I can say is that Google nor Apple nor Samsung can please everyone in the world that own a device running their OS. It’s impossible to please everyone. With that being said, that’ is why some users jump ship to iOS or go the Samsung route. I personally LOVE the way Android 12 looks with Material You! For the first time, you can totally customize the look & feel of your phone without needing t download a 3rd party launcher. Looks great to me!

No OS is perfect. I understand if you don’t like Material You overall. even being a long time Android user. Like I said, there are certain aspects of the UI that encourage a user to change OS and go iOS/Android. THat’s just the way the cookie crumbles so -to-speak. I for one, still love the customizations of Android, and the sheer usability and customizations of notifications etc. Is there a hiccup with my Android Auto? Yes, and I’ve opened up an issue on the Google product forums regarding it. Hopefully someone will help me out soon, but it’s also not the end of the world either.

Like I said, even though you’ve been a long standing Android user, if there’s something with the design Material You that’s really pissing you off, at this I doubt Google will fix it majorly. That’s what the beta program was for for the past few months. For example, If your phone is on vibrate mode, there is no more status bar icon indicating that you’re in that mode. Unless you pull down the notification shade. Does that annoy me? Yes, a little bit, and I reported it to Google. However, it’s NOT MAJOR, and it would be irrational for me to go nuts about it just for that one minor annoyance if that makes sense.

I hope this helps someone out and makes sense.

Yeah, I mean I agree that there are too many versions of android OS on too many different phones. Some people that have Samsung galaxy phones not have the same issues that I have on my pixel phone and vice versa. In general though, that’s been the frustration with android since it’s inception. I also don’t believe it’ll ever go away. But that is what I would call it is what it is. I’m not trying to discount anyone’s experiences or feelings are obviously better but yeah my pics are five barely has any issues whatsoever. I do feel bad and horrible for the people that do have system issues…. I know it can be very frustrating, especially if it’s a daily driver!

I mean for example, Samsung galaxy version of android 12 with Material you I’ve seen on other websites another post things that their version of material you isn’t that great, and they’ve been trying to work hard at ironing out all their bags as well.

And I will say that some of these problems are due to the apps not being updated; however, visual voice mail is part of the software I believe. I can still access voicemail via Verizon; however, I have NO indications that voice mails have been left in some cases, and in some cases I get a notification that voicemails cannot be downloaded. Two different notifications at different times for different voicemails. THAT IS A BUG!

My Pixel 5 is running fine also. It’s the damn UI in 12 that everyone is (your words) «overly complaining» about. I have a list with 20 absolutely insane issues that should not be there. It’s bad enough that Google weather is constantly playing hide and seek, ya can’t even get rid of the clock/calendar on the home screen to free up space. You know, for something like a Widget, that actually works. Hey, I like playing Marco/Polo, just not with Googles Weather App.

Here’s another one for you Eric. The little green light in the upper right corner that lets you know you’re on a call. Like I don’t know when I’m on a call, but I digress. Why can’t they make that little green light blink on the lock screen as a notification, of calls and text, similar like they did back in the old days of Android. That blinking notification light has been talked about ever since they got rid of it. Yet they won’t listen and put it back, at least as an option.

Don’t get me started on the dual personality over/under clock on the lock screen. It’s like I now have Sybil controlling it. Get a notification and, oh look, Sybil changed the clock back to what it was in 11. But just to let Sybil really tick me off, you can’t get rid of the over/under clock. And clear the notifications and whoops, Sybil is back messing with the dang clock again. And put your Pixel 5 in a Pixel stand to charge it, and guess who’s back? Yup Sybil has a third cousin.

Would you like to talk about wallpapers? Some have «Home, Lock Screen or Home and Lock Screen», as options, others only have «Home or Home and Lock Screen». And these aren’t just live wallpapers either. You should be able to put any picture on any screen, and any combination you’d like, no matter where or what it is. It makes no sense that you can’t. Heck I could do THAT, on my dang Nokia Icon running Windows 10 Mobile! Why the «Settings» difference between the different wallpapers?

And since I’m on a «Settings» rant, (nice segue) what’s up with the half inch of dead air above the word «Settings» in the settings menu? You know, that screen space that could have been used for something useful like hmmmm let me think, oh I know, how about using that space for your favorites in «Settings». Now there’s a novel idea! Or maybe a battery widget? Oh there’s another idea. Or how about settings widget for things like Memory or CPU or storage space. But no, you can’t do anything with that space. Just a half inch of dead air that you have to live with.

I could go on and on but I won’t. Hopefully Google reads this forum and make appropriate changes. Oh snap, there’s another idea, can I just have the UI from 11 back please?

TLDR; Android 12 is pretty much a rock solid operating system, with a User Interface that still belongs in Beta. And from other peoples comments, I’m not alone in my thinking.

I understand what you’re saying. Without a doubt. For me though, Android 12’s material you auto theming engine is beautiful. And listen everyone’s different. There’s no question about that. The little green dot on that top right of the screen to signify when you’re microphone / cameras active takes a little getting used to, but iOS has the same exact thing. And yes both Apple, and Google copy each other for quite a few of these features at the end of the day.

As far as material you feming and Android 12, I personally love it. The design language is awesome, the customization is great, etc etc. In the beta program where there are a few frustrations and faults that **** me off? Well, sure. But I reported them as bugs and some of them got fixed and some of them didn’t. Like I’ve seen previous posts, if your phone isn’t vibrate mode there’s no status bar symbol icon to signify that you’re in vibrate mode. I left my phone in silent all mode a couple days ago work. I was wondering if my phone was actually broken while I wasn’t receiving notifications. Oh, I was. I forgot that my phone was in silent mode. However, for this either bug, or design tweak that Google did, I had reported in the beta program numerous numerous times in Google never fixed it. So it is what it is I’m not going to keep on complaining about it though. There’s no point in doing so. At least for me.

As far as widgets are concerned, I don’t use that many widgets on my home screen. The only widget I use is the attic lens widget; I really hope just like we all do that Google fixes the calendar functionality of the added glance widget sooner than later. Other than that I really don’t use the material you widgets all that much. In Android’s earlier days of my Droid 1, I use a lot more widgets, but I’ve gotten used to just one home screen, and just acting on my notifications from my status bar notification shade. That’s about it. Besides I have a digital clock in the top left of my screen what do I need a short cuff on the alarm clock for? You have to remember, I use Google Assistant on my phone religiously. Lol. With that being said, the most I can suggest anyone having these types of issues is to you keep on reporting them to Google. Who knows whether Google will actually act upon it, or not. But it is worth a shot at the end of the day.

trust me, I definitely understand frustrations with the OS especially in beta mode, but for the most part Android 12 OS unless I might fix a 5 is rock solid have no complaints whatsoever thankfully.
