How to Disable In-App Browsers Opening links on Android Mobiles?

Back in Olden days, When we open the links in the Android apps, It will redirect us to our favorite default browsers. From there, we can surf and go through the details. But, Nowadays, when you open the links in apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, they open those blogs/websites within the app. This browser is called “In-App Browsers.” Most of the time, these browsers are useful when we surf basic information. We don’t want to open another new app. So, here we are going to disable the In-App Browsers from Opening links when we hit the links within the app.

When do you need to Disable In-App Browsers?

These Browser apps are basic. You can’t open more tabs and do the regular Browser stuff. Also, When you fill out forms, there are plenty of chances, you will miss the information when there is an error or accidental reload. So, When we want to do essential things, It is better to use actual browsers. You can’t edit the links and can’t save those pages. They are used to view webpages. That’s why they utilize the app called Android Webview. You can find this app in your App listings. But, you can’t use this Webview as a standalone app.

Disable In-App Browsers Opening links on Android Mobiles

The problem with the disabling In-App browsers is you have to disable this option within the apps. So, most of the apps allow us to do this with the in-built option. You can disable the whole process by disabling Android Webview. But, In some mobiles, It doesn’t discover the links, and we can’t copy the link.

Disable Instagram In-App Browser

This method will most of the time. But, the problem is sometimes the Instagram app will redirect the external links to instagram.com URL, and then it will redirect again to the actual website/blog. We can configure the Rules in the settings.

Method 1- Using Settings

• Open Settings on your mobile.

• Select Apps and Notifications. Choose Instagram.

• Select “Advanced” and “Open by Default.”

• Choose “Open supported links” and select “Don’t open in this app.”

• That’s all. Now all the external links will open in the browser.

Method 2- Using the “Open with” option

• Open the Instagram app on your mobile.

• Select any link within the app. It will open the website using the in-app browser.

• Now select the three-dot icon on the corner of the app after the website loaded in the app.

• Choose “Open with” and select your favorite browser.

• You can browse the page from your browser. All the data will show on your mobile browser.

Stop Gmail from Opening links within the app

Even if Gmail utilizes the Chrome browser, the options are limited when it is open the links within the Gmail app. So, we have to configure the links option if you didn’t like the experience.

Method 1- Using General Settings

• Open the Gmail app on your mobile.

• Select the hamburger menu and choose Settings and then “General Settings.”

• Scroll down to the bottom and un-tick the option “Open web links in Gmail.”

• That’s all now all the external links will open in the browser.

Method 2- Using the “Open in Browser” option

• Open the Gmail app on your mobile.

• Select any link within the app. It will open the website using the in-app browser.

• Now select the three-dot icon on the corner of the app after the website loaded in the app.

• Choose “Open in Browser” and select your favorite browser.

• You can browse the page from your browser. All the data will show on your mobile browser.

Method 3- Copy the link

Unlike the other apps, the Gmail app allows you to copy the link within the Gmail app. Long press the URL and copy the link. You can paste the link in your browser and open the respective webpage or installed app.

Disable in-app browser in Twitter

You can’t copy links on Twitter. Thus we need to disable the in-app browser using settings. Or you can open the link in Chrome browser.

Method 1- Using Settings

• Open the Twitter app on your mobile.

• Select the profile menu and choose Settings and privacy then select “Display and Sound.”

• Scroll down to the bottom and un-tick the option “Use in-app browser” under the Web browser.

• That’s all now all the external links will open in the browser.

Method 2- Using the “Open in Browser” option

• Open the Twitter app on your mobile.

• Select any link within the app. It will open the website using the in-app browser.

• Now select the three-dot icon on the corner of the app after the website loaded in the app.

• Choose “Open in Browser” and select your favorite browser.

• You can browse the page from your browser. All the data will show on your mobile browser.

Disable Opening external links within the Telegram app

Like Twitter, Telegram allows us to disable the in-app browser within the app settings.

• Open the Telegram app on your mobile.

• Select the profile menu and choose Settings, then select “Chat Settings.”

• You have to Un-tick the option “In-App Browser” under the Chat list view.

• That’s all now; all the external links will open in the browser.

Open External links in Browser in Facebook App

Most of the links you opened on Facebook is content. So, You can use the default Facebook in-app browser. But, When you don’t need, they have the in-built option to disable the browser.

Method 1- Using In-Built Settings

• Open the Facebook app on your mobile.

• Select the hamburger menu and choose Settings and privacy then select “Settings.”

• Scroll down to the bottom and choose the option “Media and contacts.”

• Enable the option “Links open externally.”

• That’s all now all the external links will open in the browser.

Method 2- Copy Link

Yes, you can copy the external links and internal Facebook links. But, Both links will go to Facebook URL first then redirect to the respective page.

• Open the Facebook app on your mobile.

• Select any link within the app. Select the three-dot icon and choose the “Copy link.” You can paste the link in your browser and open the respective webpage or installed app.

Disable Open Weblinks in-app in Reddit

Unlike other apps that have multiple menus to get into what we need, the Reddit app is straightforward. You can easily access the Weblinks rules within the Settings menu.

Method 1- Using In-Built Settings

• Open the Reddit app on your mobile.

• Select the profile menu and choose Settings.

• Scroll down to the bottom and disable the option “Open web links in-app.”

• That’s all now all the external links will open in the browser.

Method 2- Using the “Open in Browser” option

• Open the Reddit app on your mobile.

• Select any link within the app. It will open the website using the in-app browser.

• Now select the three-dot icon on the corner of the app after the website loaded in the app.

• Choose “Open in Browser” and select your favorite browser.

• You can browse the page from your browser. All the data will show on your mobile browser.

Minimalize, our actions are excellent when using apps. But, It should be useful. Most of the Ticket payments apps use the in-app browser to avoid the loss in transactions and avoiding manipulation. But, When you want to edit URL or fill out the form and want to access the History, You are limited in the in-app browsers. So, We have to open it in a Real browser. How to Open an Android App from the Browser

Opening an installed app from a browser is often referred to as “deep linking”, and with this guide you’ll learn how to deep link into your Android app for yourself. We’ll focus exclusively on how to trigger an app open from a website page, rather than from the click of a link inside other apps. Android is, by far, one of the most fragmented platforms that developers have ever had to manage, due to Google’s decision to force device manufacturers to be responsible for porting the OS, which requires backwards compatibility and support of a multitude of devices. In this ecosystem, we, the app developers, are left to pick up the pieces. Deep linking on Android is unfortunately no different—over the years, we’ve seen a plethora of technical requirements that must be used depending on the circumstance and context of the user.

Overview of Changes

There are two places where changes will need to be made in order to successfully open your Android app: your website and your Android app. You can find the details of each change in the corresponding sections below.

Adding Support for URI Schemes to Your App

A URI scheme can be any string without special characters, such as http , pinterest , fb or myapp . Once registered, if you append :// to the end (e.g. pinterest://) and click this link, the Pinterest app will open up. If the Pinterest app is not installed, you’ll see a ‘Page Not Found’ error.

It is simple to configure your app for a URI scheme. To start, you need to pick an Activity within your app that you’d like to open when the URI scheme is triggered, and register an intent filter for it. Add the following code within the tag within your manifest that corresponds to the Activity you want to open.

You can change your_uri_scheme to the URI scheme that you’d like. Ideally, you want this to be unique. If it overlaps with another app’s URI scheme, the user will see an Android chooser when clicking on the link. You see this often when you have multiple browsers installed, as they all register for the http URI.

Next, you’ll want to confirm that your app was opened from the URI scheme. To handle the deep link in the app, you simply need to grab the intent data string in the Activity that was opened via the click. Below is an example:

Adding Javascript to Your Website to Open Your App

Now that your Android app is ready to be triggered from a URI scheme, the next part is simple. You merely need to add some Javascript to your website that will auto trigger your app open. The function below, triggerAppOpen , will attempt to open your app’s URI scheme once you replace your_uri_scheme with the one you added in the manifest above.

You could call triggerAppOpen into window.onload if you wanted to do it on page load, or you could make it the onclick of a link somewhere on your site. Either works and the you’ll get the intended results.

How to Disable In-App Browser for Android Apps

Want to disable in-app browser for Android apps? Well, the majority of applications these days offer an in-app browsing feature for opening URLs and webpages directly within the app without leaving it to your phone’s default browser. Developers apparently do this to keep users locked within their apps for as much time as possible.

Now while this offers faster access to web content, some of you may not like the approach. And hence, you have to press twice to open links from the applications on your primary browser. Now, tons of applications are bundled with the in-app browsing feature, and all of them have different methods to disable it. And while it just requires a bit of tinkering around with the settings, below are methods to disable in-app browsers for major Android apps, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

Google App

Links from the Google app are opened in an in-app browser instead of Chrome or the default browser. This makes it really annoying, especially when you open an article in Google News Feed. You can follow the steps given below to disable it.

1. Open the Google app on your Android.
2. Head to the More section (three parallel dots given at the bottom right) and click on Settings.
3. Tap on General.
4. Scroll down and look for the option that says “Open web pages in the app.”
5. Flick the toggle to disable it.

Facebook

Facebook being globally the largest social media platform, needs no introduction. To disable the in-app browser in the Facebook app:

1. Open the Facebook app, click on the hamburger menu at the top-right corner of the navigation bar.

3. Now, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on Media and Contacts.

Instagram

Stop Instagram from Opening Links

Whenever you click on a link related to Instagram, it automatically opens it in the app. If you want to open it in your browser instead, follow the steps below:

1. Open Settings on your phone.
2. Go to Apps and Notifications >See all Apps.
3. Select Instagram and click on Open by default.
4. Here, tap Open Supported Links and change it to Don’t allow.

Open Links from Instagram in Default Browser

When you click links inside Instagram, they open in an in-app browser. To open them in your default browsers like Chrome or Edge, follow the steps below.

1. Tap the link inside Instagram.
2. Once it opens, click the three-dot menu at the top right corner.
3. Click on Open in like Open in Chrome or Open in Edge.

Gmail

Links embedded in your emails open in a separate custom tab by default. However, you can set them not to open in Gmail through the app’s settings.

1. Launch the Gmail app on your phone and click the hamburger menu to open the sidebar.
2. Click on Settings and head to the General Settings tab.
3. Uncheck the box against the “Open web links in Gmail” option, and you’re good to go.

Telegram

Being one of the best alternatives to WhatsApp, Telegram is all about messaging and sharing content, including web links. And since I’ve been using it for a while now, nobody would understand the pain of tapping ‘Open link in Chrome’ better than me. In case you’re vexed by the same, follow the steps mentioned below.

1. On your Android, open the Telegram app and head to the Settings through the sidebar.
2. Here, select Chat Settings.
3. Scroll down a bit and disable the In-App Browser option.
4. Links received in Telegram will now open in your phone’s default browser.

Twitter

Twitter is a microblogging platform where link sharing has its own significance. Follow the steps below to disable Twitter’s in-app browsing feature on your Android.

1. Open Twitter and swipe from the left edge to open the navigation bar.
2. Here, select Settings and privacy.
3. Click on Display and sound.
4. Uncheck the box for “Use in-app browser” under the Web Browser heading.

Reddit

Any Redditors here? For starters, Reddit is a popular network of communities based on people’s interests. And if you’re amongst one, I don’t think you’ll need a guide to disable in-app browsing. Yet, in case you’re confused, catch up with the steps below.

1. Launch Reddit on your phone.
2. Tap on your profile picture in the top left corner to open the sidebar menu.
3. Then, click on Settings at the bottom.
4. Now, disable the “Open web links in-app” option, and you’re good to go.

Tip- How to Change your Default Browser to Chrome

On many phones, the browser in use, by default, is provided by the phone manufacturer. So, if you want to use Chrome instead of any other browser, open the phone Settings and search for the “default app” section. Select the corresponding option and change your default browser to Google Chrome.

Open Settings and head to the Apps section. Tap on the three-dot menu and select ‘Show system apps‘ or ‘Show all applications.’ From the list of available apps, please search for your current default browser and tap on it. Then, click on Open by Default and press the “Clear Defaults” button.

Now, the next time you open a link, you’ll be asked to select the browser of your choice. Just select Chrome and click on ‘Always.’
