What’s new?

• We’re close to preparing the official Android 12 upgrade build for Nokia X20. Stay tuned to your regional media channels for news of the release schedule.
• We’re now closing registrations for new developer preview users and any new requests for the ADP#2. If you’re already enjoying ADP#2 release, we hope you’ll want to stay with us up to the official release.
• You can now upgrade without loss of user data from any Android 11 official build or the earlier ADP build (V2.072). Please note that rollback from ADP to the official Android 11 build will result in loss of user data.

Important Notes

Please review the points below before proceeding with the registration process:

• Android 12 developer preview builds (ADP) are early Android OS releases and are intended for application developers only – they are not recommended for general use.
• Although strenuously tested by our development team, the builds may exhibit performance and/or stability issues in some cases.
• Some applications downloaded from the Google Play Store may not be supported (either in full or in part) and may show signs of instability.
• Online support is limited and may not be available to help users who experience difficulties with flashing the device.

If you have any doubts on whether these builds are suitable for your use, we recommend you do not continue with developer preview registration and await the official market release.

Please note, we may not be able to offer Android developer preview builds to devices on certain network providers.

Ready to get started?

• Open the My Device app on your phone, click on the Support banner at the bottom, and scroll down to “Android developer preview”.
• Allow the app to check your IMEI (so we can check eligibility of device), agree to the software license terms and conditions, and after checking the Important Notes, confirm you’re happy to continue.

Get developer preview over the air

Over-the-air (OTA) is the easiest way to get your hands on the new Android developer preview builds. Due to image file size, it is recommended that users download builds over Wi-Fi.

For existing ADP users, the new build will be pushed automatically to your device – no need to request the update.

New ADP users should note that after you request the update, the build will be available to you within 12 hours and you’ll get a notification on your device when it is ready to install.

Alternatively, if you want to try and get the build sooner, wait about 20 minutes after requesting the build (so we can get the build synched with your IMEI) and then try a manual push request from Settings > About Phone > System Updates.

You can now test your apps! Don’t forget to let us know what you think – you’ll be helping with software improvements and enhancements later down the line.

Please report any issues through the pre-installed Customer Feedback app as this is the quickest way we can take in your issues in for further review.

Rollback to official release

We really hope you’ll continue with ADP and give feedback through the Customer Feedback app, but if you’d prefer to return to the official release software, you can do so by requesting a rollback through the My Device app.

• Please remember that rollback to an official market release will result in the loss of user data. We recommend that you periodically back up any important data such as contacts, call logs, pictures, videos, music, installed apps, chat history, SMS history, notes, etc. You may also need to re-install any applications previously downloaded.
• Ideally, your phone should be fully charged, but a minimum of 60% charge is recommended.
• Please note you will not be able use the phone – including any attempts to make an emergency call – until the installation is complete and the phone has booted into a stable state.

You’ll still be a member of the Nokia phones Developer preview program and be able to request ADP builds should you so wish.

Unregistering

If you wish to unregister from the Nokia phones Android developer preview program, you must first roll back all devices in your account to the latest general release Android version.

The canceled Android-powered Nokia feature phone gets shown off in a hands-on video

Back in April of 2019, we first learned that Google was working on a version of Android for feature phones. Later that year, in September, we saw a leaked hands-on video of a Nokia phone running this new version of Android. Soon thereafter, we spotted a Nokia feature phone with the model number TA-1208 on the Wi-Fi Alliance website. The listing also revealed that the device would be called the Nokia 400 upon release, and it would run GAFP — Google Android for Feature Phones. Although HMD Global ended up canceling the device, another leaked hands-on video showcasing the phone has now surfaced online.

The attached video comes from the Calyx Hikari YouTube channel, and it gives us a close look at the unreleased Nokia 400. The device follows the same design language as other feature phones from Nokia, featuring a tiny display with chunky bezels, a T9 keypad, and a matte polycarbonate body. The phone features a removable back panel with a single rear-facing camera mounted in the center and an LED flash next to it. On the bottom edge, the phone features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port for charging and data syncing. Popping open the back panel reveals an unlabeled removable batter, underneath which lie the SIM card tray and a microSD card slot for expansion.

Once turned on, we see a familiar lockscreen UI that resembles the one found on other stock Android phones. Since the device doesn’t feature a touchscreen or a fingerprint sensor, you have to press and hold the asterisk key to unlock it. After the phone is unlocked, we see a blurred Google Assistant logo on what we presume is the setup screen. The Assistant logo pops up again during the setup process, confirming that the device is running a version of Android. Once the setup is complete, we see the homescreen with a large microphone icon at the top and an icon tray at the bottom. The icon tray houses the Google Chrome, Youtube, Share, and Camera icons, along with a button in the center to open the app drawer.

Instead of Android’s navigation buttons, the Nokia 400 includes Alert, Select, and Settings buttons underneath the icon tray. These buttons are mapped to the top three keys on the T9 keypad. Opening the settings menu reveals that the device features mobile data support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a flashlight. Selecting the “More Settings” option at the bottom shows all the additional settings you’d find on other Android devices, including Users & accounts, Languages & input, Privacy, Connected devices, Site usage & permissions, Battery, Display, and more.

The app drawer on the unreleased Nokia phone includes pre-installed Airtel apps, suggesting that the device was meant for the Indian market. The app drawer also features other common Android apps, like the Calculator, Calendar, file manager, file cleaner, Clock, Gallery, Contacts, Radio, Google Maps, and more. It also includes a game called Proxx, the popular Snake and Chrome Dinosaur games, and WhatsApp.

The About phone section in the phone’s settings menu reveals that it’s running Android 8.1.0 Oreo with the August 2019 security patches. It also mentions the same model info — Iron GAFP — that we saw in the previously leaked video. Furthermore, the About phone page reveals that the device features 512MB of RAM. The video showcases all of the features mentioned above in great detail, so you should definitely check it out.

Along with the hands-on video, Hikari Calyx has also shared two Assistant OOBE videos from the device onВ Twitter. These videos further confirm that the Nokia device was heading to the Indian market before being shelved. It isn’t exactly clear why HMD Global and Google decided to shelve the Android-powered feature phone. From the looks of it, the device seems like a pretty good package for India, where similar devices, like the JioPhone, have gained immense popularity.
