I ordered this one on the morning of Tuesday, 19 November and, despite choosing Android USA’s «Standard» ( IOW lowest-cost ) shipping, it arrived on Thursday 21 November. Can’t beat that!

A photo to kick things off properly:

A couple of disclaimers. First, all these photos were taken with the crown unscrewed. It doesn’t really protrude that much in normal operation. Second, the light was just terrible the day that I took these photos, so they’re not up to even my usual ( I.e. low! ) standards.

First impression? Well. » Holy shit! » would cover it, I guess. Well-packaged, and with a solidity and heft that jumps out at you even before you strap it on. Once it IS strapped on, «presence» barely does it justice!

Speaking of the packaging. I won’t bore you with a Full Unveiling, but if you do want to see the Standard Android USA Packaging, please check out my Skyguardian Power Reserve Auto Review.

Second impression? Well.

Still a heapin’ helpin’ of » Holy shit! » but now tempered with » Niiiiiiice! «.

The metallic gold dial features a radially-brushed «starburst» pattern which is very striking under certain lighting conditions, and is only somewhat evident in the above photo. While I’m no fan of a conventional Cyclops magnifier, an INTERNAL Cyclops as used here is a Horse Of Another Feather. It offers a truly useful level of magnification, the sharkfin planform is The Dog’s Bollocks and, overall I’m glad that Android included this feature.

► Full stainless case and bracelet

► 45.2mm (50mm w/ crown) x 53.25mm x 18.6mm thick, 22mm lugs

► 7mm screwdown crown, screwdown caseback

► 50 ATM / 500M WR rating

► Straight 22mm bracelet, solid links and endlinks

► 120-click ratcheting unidirectional rotating bezel

► Mineral glass crystal w/ internal cyclops

► Ronda caliber 515 quartz movement.

► 286 grams as delivered

► Super Luminova hands and markers

What’s not immediately apparent in the Android USA catalog photos is..

The complex multi-part case construction. It’s an 8-part assembly (not counting seals and gaskets) and, while this may fly in the face of the K.I.S.S. Principle when it comes to building a 50ATM Diver, it’s certainly pleasant to look at.

The 120-click bezel operates like a dream! There’s excellent purchase so that, though it requires a healthy amount of torque to rotate it, your fingers never slip. Ever! It even sounds great! Oh, and sure the pips line up spang-on with the markers. All in all one of the best rotating bezels I’ve ever encountered, at ANY price point.

The signed screwdown crown likewise operates smoothly and securely, with heaps of thread engagement. When screwed in to Operating Position, the groove lies precisely flush with the crown guard. It thus offers perfect purchase for a fingernail, making setting date and/or time an ergonomic wet dream. The color-matched inlay of the logo matches the bezel perfectly, and is Icing On The Cake.

The protective film on the caseback illustrates another of those little details for which I’ve become really impressed with Android USA. Hey, for those who don’t RTFM ( And come on! Who does? ) and may have missed the fact that it has a Screwdown Crown, this is good info!

And in a similar vein, the heavy-gauge protective clingwrap on the bracelet and clasp had little «Pull Here» tabs, complete with arrows. This may not seem like much.. Until you’ve sweated and cussed for 5 minutes trying to peel the clingwrap off a new watch, only to give up and resort to the knife. With this Android it took 10 seconds, and was totally painless. Just sayin’.

The caseback itself, while not decorated in the conventional sense of the term, is nevertheless very crisply wrought. The sticker is covering a very nicely done rendition of the logo, and all pertinent info rings the periphery. Most important, the spanner notches are well-formed and generously deep, a boon not to be discounted on a quartz watch which will require regular removal of the caseback.

Which brings us to the movement. No, I didn’t pull the caseback for a photo. Hey, you’ve seen one caliber 515 you’ve seen them all.

However! It must be stressed that the Ronda 500-series are rock-solid and reliable movements, available in a wide range of configurations.

And, push comes to shove in a Worst Case Scenario, and your movement does die, they are an inexpensive DIY replacement.

The deployant is rather nice, if unexceptional. It’s a snap-lock design of stamped construction, with flip-lock safety catch. The micro-adjust holes are on a suitably fine 2mm spacing, and offer 6mm of adjustment total. The hinge is machined, and very nicely machined indeed.

I was pleasantly surprised by..

The machined etching of the signed clasp. Most outfits would stamp it, if not just laser-etch the logo. Definitely Above And Beyond here!

As delivered, the bracelet fit me on the largest adjustment. Barely! While comfortable, it left a slight ‘indentation’ on me wrist when I removed it at the end of the day. Which is just a smidgen too tight for my tastes. I eMailed Android on Saturday, informing them of this, and requested one addition link & pin. I received a reply within the hour, promising to send an additional link on the following Monday, at no charge. That link arrived today, so I am happy to extend a Four Thumbs-Up Rating to Android USA Customer Service. so much Miss Sandi.

Another pleasant surprise was..

Not only does it ‘pop’ well initially, it offers true All Night Readability. After the first 2 or 3 hours it no longer «Glows Like A Torch», mind. But like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps going and going and going.

I sit it on me nightstand every night after wearing it, and after 7, 8, even 9 hours it’s still perfectly legible. Every time. THAT is the True Test Of Lume, me boys!

Add it all up and..

This is the new BBBB Diver ( B IG! B OLD! B ODACIOUS! B EAUTIFUL!) in me collection.

Don’t let the numbers fool you! Yes, it’s ‘only’ a 45mm watch. But on-the-wrist, this thing feels as if it could crush the Average BBBB Diver like an egg shell! The 18.6mm thickness and 286 grams have a lot to do with that, I think.

Complaints? Yes, it’s not The Perfect Diver. Mind you these are all Niggles, but.

First, the minutes hash marks offer such a low contrast to the dial that they are effectively useless. Honestly, I didn’t realize it HAD minutes hash marks until I inspected it with the loupe.

Second, the bracelet uses split-pins at the link pivots. A watch of this class, screwbars would seem more appropriate. But gets down to where The Cheese Binds, split-pins are your most reliable solution. You CAN’T strip out the threads on a split-pin, right? And they’re easily replacible should you pull a boner and lose one. So hard to consider this a true down-side, really.

Last, and also relating to the bracelet, I think a pushbutton-release deployant would have been more in character with the rest of the watch. Can’t fault the snap-lock jobbie in its operation, mind! Just sayin’.

To conclude, I can’t recommend the AD549BY highly enough! Even at the Full MSRP of USD $265 I reckon it to be A Fair Deal. At the USD $80-and-change I paid as a Deal Of The Day, it is an ASTOUNDING Value.

And yes, Bro. Dan, I tested this in a Scientific manner. I did a face-to-face amongst a dozen co-workers who know my Watch Habits well. IOW they realize that, on any given day, I might be wearing anyhing from a $10 to a $2,000 watch. I invited each to guess the price of the Silverjet, unstrapping it and handing it to them for a close inspection. The low guess was $250, the high $1,000, and the Median Average right at

And you know what? They’re right! This watch is THAT good.

Thanks fer readin’, y’all!

Sláinte!
