- Kyocera demonstrated prototype NFC handsets built with technology from Inside Contactless at the CTIA Wireless tradeshow in 2007 and 2008.
Phones that don’t have NFC
The media covering mobile handsets is very competitive so rumours, speculation and unverified assumptions fly around the world’s gadget blogs and forums all day long. Here we address the more persistent NFC misunderstandings…
- The Oneplus 2doesn’t have NFC.
- Motorola Moto G. Motorola has confirmed to NFC World that its affordable Android smartphone, introduced in November 2013, does not have NFC.
- Apple’s iPhone, up to and including iPhone 5S. Like all of their predecessors, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C do not have NFC. The iPhone 6, though, is a different story.
- Apple’s iPad. No NFC in any model so far.
- Many Japanese phones boast Osaifu Keitai (“mobile wallet”) support, but this system based on Sony’s Felica technology is not the same as NFC. Japan’s mobile network operators are, however, moving to NFC and phones started to appear on the Japanese market in 2012 that support both NFC and Osaifu Keitai. These phones are included in this list and tagged Osaifu Keitai.
- ZTE has confirmed to NFC World that the ZTE N880E, an Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ smartphone, does not have NFC.
- The budget BlackBerry 9220 does not have NFC.
- The Kyocera Echo doesn’t have NFC hardware, the company has confirmed to NFC World, despite the technology getting a mention for a while on an official spec page.
- The Samsung Galaxy S II only comes with NFC in some variants and territories. Most S IIs are not equipped with NFC hardware and availability varies by carrier and country, so buyers are advised to double check with their supplier before purchasing.
- Android 2.3+ phones. NFC requires special hardware in the handset, so although Android supports NFC from version 2.3 onwards, it does not follow that all phones running this and later versions of the Google operating system have NFC capabilities. Indeed, most don’t.

The best phones with NFC: What are your options?
If you’re in the market for an NFC-enabled smartphone, you’ve come to the right place. There are many options available these days, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find the best phones with NFC so that you don’t have to do all the hard work. Let’s jump right in!
The best phones with NFC
Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best phones with NFC regularly as new devices launch.
What is NFC, anyway?
This may sound like alien technology to those who haven’t played much with this feature. The short answer is that NFC stands for Near Field Communications. The longer one is a bit more complex.
NFC is a technology that allows close-up communications between devices or tags. It can be used to make payments, for example. Have you ever seen people pay with their phones using something like Google Pay? It can be done thanks to NFC.
You can also use NFC to do things like automating settings. Want to share your Wi-Fi password with others? Program an NFC tag and have people tap their phones on it. You can also program your smart home devices; imagine tapping your phone on an NFC tag by the door and having all lights go on.
In addition, NFC can be found on cameras, smart appliances, and even monitors. It’s become an invaluable tool for the modern smartphone user. Most high-end phones have NFC on board these days, while the same can’t be said for mid-range and budget handsets which is surprising but true. As such, it is sometimes tricky to find a phone with NFC and the features you want at a price that fits your budget.
Samsung Galaxy S21 family
Samsung’s 2021 Galaxy S21 series includes the S21, with the S21 Plus and the S21 Ultra as the more expensive variants. The S21 Ultra may be the most costly of the bunch, but it’s finally grown into the Ultra name. You get the usual stuff you get from the Galaxy S lineup, including top-of-the-line specs, excellent availability, a great camera, a great screen, large batteries, and good software that gets consistently updated.
The S21 and the S21 Plus are some of the most affordable Galaxy devices yet, with the smallest device starting at just $799 MSRP. These tick almost every box you can find, so it’s just about choosing what you need. All three devices come 5G-ready, and you’ll find an NFC chip right at home on each one.

Apple iPhone 13 family
We may be an Android-centric website, but it’s not easy to simply brush the iPhone 13 series under the rug. Apple’s iPhone 13 family includes four models, including one of the best small flagships you can get, the iPhone 13 Mini.
The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro look very similar, each with a 6.1-inch notched display. Of course, there are some differences in specs and the number of rear cameras. You’ll only find two rear cameras on the 13 and 13 Mini, while the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max models sport triple camera arrays. No matter which device you choose, all of Apple’s latest phones are 5G ready with A15 Bionic chips onboard. All four are excellent phones with NFC to meet your wireless needs.
You may not look forward to moving from Android to iOS, but it’s easier than ever to switch. Apple offers a near rainbow of color options, and we won’t judge you for changing.

OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro
OnePlus finally seems to have accepted its place among killer flagships rather than flagship killers in 2021, but these latest devices finally have a price tag to match. The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro pack the Snapdragon 888 chipset and 12GB of RAM under the hood. They also feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, crisp cameras, and, of course, NFC chips.
With the 9 Pro, we’re now seeing an official IP rating, blistering 50W wireless charging, but there’s no return for the headphone jack. It’s basically top of the line in nearly every way, and the 9 Pro display is absolutely top of the line. You won’t find IP ratings on the standard OnePlus 9 if you buy unlocked, but the carrier versions come IP67 rated as T-Mobile is footing the bill. It also packs 15W wireless charging, which is better than none at all.
OnePlus 9 specs:
- Display: 6.55-inch, FHD+

- RAM: 8/12GB
- Storage: 128/256GB

- Cameras: 48, 8, 50, and 2MP
- Front camera: 16MP
- Battery: 4,500mAh
- Software: Android 11
Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
While the Google Pixel 5 was a bit underwhelming, the new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are stunning devices with a new design language, premium build, and specs that compete with the best of the best. If all that isn’t enough, these devices also manage to keep prices very reasonable compared to other high-end handsets.
Just look at them. Their colors are fun and light-hearted, but their internals sure aren’t. These come with Google’s new Tensor chipset, and 8-12GB of RAM, ensuring speedy performance. The displays are also stunning, with the Pixel 6 featuring a Full HD+ AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the Pixel 6 Pro upgrades you to a QHD+ panel with 120Hz.
Of course, both are phones with NFC, and will take care of all your short-distance connectivity needs.
Google Pixel 6 specs:
- Display: 6.4-inch, Full HD+
- SoC: Google Tensor
- RAM: 8GB
- Storage: 128/256GB

- Software: Android 12
Xiaomi Mi 11 series
There’s always a race to bring Qualcomm’s latest hardware to market; this year, the crown belongs to Xiaomi. The Mi 11 series was the first to land with the Snapdragon 888 onboard, and all three models are excellent phones with NFC.
You can pick up the classic Xiaomi Mi 11 or take things a little further with the Mi 11 Pro and get similar specs either way. Both phones pack the same processor, display size, and storage options, so the real choice comes in your preferred camera and battery setup.
Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra is what happens when you take the solid Mi 11 and crank it to 11. It packs everything from a Snapdragon 888 chipset to an NFC chip, and you can’t miss the massive camera bump. Not to mention the massive 6.81-inch display.
Xiaomi Mi 11 specs:

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and A52s 5G
The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the A52s 5G are both great phones with NFC, but the Galaxy A52s 5G came with an added improvement that makes it a slightly better device. The price difference is minimal, so you might as well upgrade if you can. The A52s is harder to get in the USA, though, as it wasn’t made for this market. You can find it, but it will be imported.
The Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G features a Snapdragon 778G chipset instead of the 750G on the Galaxy A52 5G. This will provide added performance for a minimal price increase. Otherwise, the specs are pretty much identical. These phones are pretty affordable, too, so you’ll get all the benefits of NFC without splurging.
Samsung Galaxy A52 5G specs:
- Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
- SoC: Snapdragon 750G
- RAM: 6/8GB
- Storage: 128/256GB
- Cameras: 64, 12, 5, and 5MP
- Front camera: 32MP
- Battery: 4,500mAh
- Software: Android 11
Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G specs:
- Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
- SoC: Snapdragon 778G
- RAM: 6/8GB
- Storage: 128/256GB
- Cameras: 64, 12, 5, and 5MP
- Front camera: 32MP
- Battery: 4,500mAh
- Software: Android 11
Poco F3
The Poco F3 is an excellent phone with NFC. It’s super affordable, yet still has plenty to offer. The handset has a modern design with a premium build quality and sports three rear cameras. It even has a Snapdragon 870, an unbelievable chipset for the price.
You may not be blown away by the Poco F3’s software, but the build quality is impressive, and the 4,520mAh battery packs the power to last all day and more. There’s no headphone jack on the F3, but it covers you with Wi-Fi 6, Dual-SIM support, an IR blaster, and more.
Poco hasn’t launched the F3 stateside, but there are ways to get it. Check the link below to learn more about it.
Poco F3 specs:
- Display: 6.67-inch, HD+
- SoC: Snapdragon 870
- RAM: 6/8GB
- Storage: 128/256GB
- Cameras: 48, 8, and 5MP
- Front camera: 20MP
- Battery: 4,520mAh
- Software: Android 11
8. OnePlus Nord 2 5G
We have plenty of OnePlus Nord devices, and they’re all phones with NFC, but there are reasons we recommend the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. This is the first OnePlus phone to use something other than a Qualcomm chipset. Instead, it takes advantage of the MediaTek Dimensity 1200, which can take performance to much higher levels than the mid-range Snapdragons can.
Aside from that, you get the usual OnePlus package: a clean UI and minimalist design. There’s also plenty of RAM, a decent camera, a pretty large battery, and a nice 90Hz AMOLED display. It also has Wi-Fi 6, which is nice considering the phone isn’t all that expensive.
OnePlus Nord 2 5G specs:
- Display: 6.43-inch, FHD+
- SoC: MediaTek Dimensity 1200
- RAM: 6/8/12GB
- Storage: 128/256GB
- Cameras: 50, 8, and 2MP
- Front camera: 32MP
- Battery: 4,500mAh
- Software: Android 11
Oppo Find X3 Pro
Our next phone with NFC brings us to Oppo with a healthy dose of space-age style. The Find X3 Pro may be one of the most fingerprint-prone phones of all time, yet we can’t help but stare at the brilliant design.
The Find X3 Pro isn’t the most affordable NFC-enabled phone on our list, but the good news is that it comes with very few sacrifices. You’re looking at four rear cameras, though only two of them are truly “Pro” worthy. The battery life is also excellent, and 65W fast charging keeps your outlet time to a minimum. We can also get behind the 120Hz display and included IP rating for durability.
Again, the Find X3 Pro is an absolute fingerprint magnet. You might find yourself wiping down the rear glass constantly, which isn’t for everyone. You’ll also have to keep Oppo’s charger handy, as the device only uses SuperVOOC for top-speed charges.
Oppo Find X3 Pro specs:
- Display: 6.7-inch, QHD+
- SoC: Snapdragon 888
- RAM: 12GB
- Storage: 256GB
- Cameras: 50, 50, 13, and 3MP
- Front camera: 32MP
- Battery: 4,500mAh
- Software: Android 11
Google Pixel 5a
If you like Google devices but still find the Pixel 6 series a bit pricey, you may also want to take a look at the Google Pixel 5a 5G. Google’s A-Series smartphones are known for optimizing for the maximum bang per buck. These value handsets keep prices very low, and the Pixel 5a is no exception.
The $449 MSRP is very light on the wallet, at least compared to its competitors. Aside from 5G compatibility, the device comes with an OLED panel that won’t disappoint. There’s also a Snapdragon 765G and 6GB of RAM onboard. More than enough to keep casual users happy. And we can’t forget about the camera system. Like every other modern Pixel, this device can take images that compete with devices that cost more than twice the price.
This is certainly one of the best phones with NFC if you’re on a budget.
