How to update Android Studio in Ubuntu?
I am trying to update from version 2.0.0 to version 2.1.2 in Ubuntu 64bit/14.04LTS but when I click «update and restart» it says «Downloading patches» and it closes.
It does not start again and if I try to open it, the version is still 2.0.0.
Is there any tutorial to manually update android studio? (keep all settings and etc).

I experienced the same issue when trying to update from 2.1.0 to 2.1.1 and the update problem still persisted after the Android Studio 2.1.2 release.
In the end the only option was a clean install of Android Studio.
To keep your existing Android Studio settings download and install the latest version into a different folder. When the new installation of Android Studio is run for the first time it will prompt you to import your settings from the older Android Studio version you have installed.
I had the same problem. I found that after the patch is downloaded Android Studio tries to update itself but as it is run without sudo rights it fallbacks to simply run the old version of Android Studio without updating it.
In order to update my old version of Android studio I went to the folder where Android studio was installed, in my case
/apps/android-studio/bin/, and run with sudo Android Studio, in my case sudo ./studio.sh
It will then ask you for your Android Studio configuration file. Be careful about the location where the installation process will install a new Android SDK version, because in my case it wanted to install it in the wrong directory, I had to select custom installation in order to select the folder where I had my previous Android SDK.

How do I update android studio 2.3.2 to 3.0 on ubuntu?
Actually I want to try the kotlin language which requires android studio 3.0, but I have 2.3.2. So how do I update the thing on Ubuntu?

Well I found out that many versions of Android Studio can be installed side by side which is better for me since I wan to have the old one also:
You can also upgrade android studio from older version to new version. Go to Help -> Check for Updates Then the update window will appear, Select Update and Restart button or Update Now if you are updating Plugins.
Usually, there is an issue with the upgradation i.e. When we click «update and restart» it says «Downloading patches» and it closes after or before downloading the entire patches. It does not start again and if we try to open it, the version is still the older one. I found that after the patch is downloaded Android Studio tries to update itself but as it is run without sudo rights it fallbacks to simply run the old version of Android Studio without updating it.
So to fix it go to the folder where Android studio was installed, usually, it is /usr/local/android-studio/bin and go to sudo mode using sudo -i and then run ./studio.sh or run sudo ./studio.sh (but it didn’t work for me) and try to download the patches again probably now it should get updated.
This will preserve the confriguration of your older version of Android Studio.

Android Studio update issue with jre/bin/java
While updating Android Studio I got the following error. The patch was downloaded and extracted, but there was some conflict with jre/bin/java Access denied . The error message is shown in the below screenshot.

Kill java for update
output of this command will give the list of java processes running on your system. Note down Process ID (PID) of that process whom you want to kill and run
What I found worked for me is with Android Studio running (before initiating the update patch download) I did ps -ef|grep jre on the command line and saw there were 2 jre process running, the one for Android Studio and one of which was for the Gradle daemon which was also using the jre shipped inside Android Studio. The Gradle daemon process will have something like this: gradle-5.3.1/lib/gradle-launcher-5.3.1.jar org.gradle.launcher.daemon.bootstrap.GradleDaemon 5.3.1
towards the end of its command line when you list processes with ps though of course the specific version you have may not be 5.3.1.
Killing the Gradle process and then starting the update download and then restart from inside Android Studio let the update proceed successfully.
