Google renames ‘Device Personalization Services’ to ‘Android System Intelligence’ [Update: New icon]

“Device Personalization Services” is the method through which Google delivers and updates features like Now Playing (on Pixel), Live Caption, and smart actions in notifications to Android devices. This app, updated via the Play Store, is now being renamed to “Android System Intelligence,” at least on Google Pixel phones.

Update 9/12: As of the past few weeks, the “ Device Personalization Services” to “Android System Intelligence” rename is widely rolled out on Pixel devices. This specifically includes the app name in settings and the widgets list.

ASI now also appears in the Play Store listing with a completely new icon that replaces the previous corner radial one. The new logo is a 3×3 grid of blue dots with some connecting. It represents the relationships between data points. The next Android System Intelligence version will presumably update the on-device icon to match.

Original 8/1: Functionality offered by DPS differs from device to device, with the fullest experience found on Pixel. On Google phones, you get the ability to see captions for all playing media — since expanded to other OEMs, camera-powered Screen Attention to make sure your display doesn’t go to sleep while you’re looking at it, and Now Playing.

The latter listens for songs playing in the background and quickly identifies them on your lockscreen or the bottom of the notification shade. You can also place it on the homescreen with a widget accessed through the usual long-press.

You might have recently noticed that the “Now Playing history” widget is now at the very top of that list because it’s no longer listed under Device Personalization Services. Rather, Google has decided to rename it “Android System Intelligence” with version R.22.playstore.pixel3.386404629 of the application. This update is not widely rolled out yet, and we’ve so far only encountered it on a Pixel 3 running Android 11. Third-party devices where Live Caption is available will presumably also see the new name.

It’s also renamed in the “App info” page, but “Device Personalization Services” is still in Settings > Privacy, where you’re able to clear local data your device has learned. From there, you can also determine whether you want to see “smart text suggestions in the keyboard suggestion strip including smart reply and paste.”

Other functionality powered by Android System Intelligence, which shares the same icons as DPS, is improved copy/paste and Smart Text Selection. When users highlight a phone number, they get a shortcut to open the Phone app and dial or launch Google Maps with addresses.

Google previously renamed the Pixel’s “Connectivity Health” app to “Adaptive Connectivity Services.” Overall, Android System Intelligence is a better, more descriptive name than DPS, especially when looking for Now Playing.

If you’re running a Google Pixel handset or a vanilla version of Android (i.e. not the OEM version), then chances are you’ve seen the Android System Intelligence App install automatically from the Google Play Store. To start things off, it’s nothing to worry about. It’s actually quite a useful app that runs in the background, running various services and making your handset more accessible.

Android System Intelligence – What Is It?

Formally known as ‘Device Personalization Services’, Google uses Android System Intelligence to send updates to your handset for features like ‘Now Playing’, ‘Live Caption’, and other smart notifications. You probably never knew it existed until seeing the install around September 9th. This is due to a re-brand of the old Device Personalization Services logo and name to Android System Intelligence

Android System Intelligence – Why Do We Need It?

Android System Intelligence looks after more smart functions on your Google Pixel device than you might think. The notification that allows you to pause and play current tracks from your music streaming service, even from your lock screen? You have Android System Intelligence to thank for that. Android System Intelligence Bugs And Errors

Whilst Android System Intelligence behaves quite well on public Android 11 builds, there have been some reports of Android System Intelligence crashing on Android 12 beta builds. Unfortunately, this is to be expected on Beta builds, even stable releases. Make sure to report the issue in the Android Beta Feedback App (You should have this if you are running the Android 12 Beta) and restart Android System Intelligence, which should happen automatically.
