How To Fix Apps Freezing And Crashing On Android Devices

One of the things we love the most when using Android smartphones or tablets is the fact we can download tons of apps. Just by launching Google Play, we get instant access to a variety of apps. While some of the applications cost a few cents or dollars, the majority is free. We can try new apps daily! But is the experience of using the apps always smooth? Unfortunately not. Some of your favorite apps can freeze or crash. Every Android user faced this issue at least once. The problem can occur on various Android devices, including LG G3, LG G4, Samsung S6, and S6 Edge, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, HTC 7, HTC 8, HTC 9, and many others. If this bothering you now, and apps freezing and crashing on an Android smartphone or tablet you own, try the solutions below.

Why do apps freeze or crash?

There are several reasons why apps keep crashing or freezing. The app can become unresponsive or it may crash if it is not up to date. Many apps work a lot better if you have a strong Internet connection. Another reason is the fact the app is poorly coded. If you do not have enough free storage space on your Android, the apps won’t be able to run properly. It is very important to clear the app’s cache and data every once in a while especially for the apps you use frequently. If you haven’t done it for a while, the app will start to misbehave. A software glitch can also cause the problem.

How to fix apps freezing and crashing issue

As you may notice, various things can be the reason why apps crashing or freezing. Now that we know what is causing the issue, let’s fix it.

Restart your Android device

The first thing you should do is restart your device. The processes that may be opened along with the apps that keep running in the background will close after you restart your device. That way, you will free up the memory that might have been clogged. Your device will perform smoother. If you notice the apps keep crashing or freezing after the reboot, move to other solutions.

To restart your device, press and hold the Power button. When the menu appears, tap Restart or Power off and Restart.

Update your apps

App developers are giving their best to deliver a great experience to the users, which is why they are constantly working on improvements. If users complain about the issue, including freezing and crashing, developers will fix it with an update. That is why it is essential to regularly update all your apps or at least the ones you use daily.

Internet connection

Some apps work great when the Internet connection is stable and strong, for instance, when you are connected to a home or office Wi-Fi. But if you are using an app when connected to Wi-Fi and switch to 3G, the app may freeze or crash. When you want to switch the network, close the app first. That way you will avoid crashing. If you are currently experiencing Wi-Fi issues and your connection is slow, try the following:

Toggle Wi-Fi and the Airplane Mode
Turn off Bluetooth
Restart your Android device and your router
Connect to another network.

Clear cache and data

We all have our favorite apps and we use them daily. Over some period of time, the cache will pile up, and you may notice the app is running slow or freezing, or crashing frequently. That often happens when we are using some of the most popular apps such as Facebook, Viber, Instagram, Spotify, Maps, Messanger, WhatsApp, etc. Once you delete the cache, the app will work normally.

Here is what you need to do:

Go to Settings
Tap on Apps (App Manager, Manage apps, depending on the Android device)
Find the app that keeps crashing or freezing and tap on it
Next, tap Clear cache
Tap Force stop
Go back to the Home screen and launch the app again.

Clearing the cache helped many users to fix the problems such as “Instagram has stopped”, or “Viber has stopped working”.

What to do if clearing the cache didn’t solve the problem and one of your favorite apps is still crashing? You can clear the data. It is a bit more drastic step than the previous one because this will remove your personal configuration of the app and all of its data. Once you do this and launch the app it will be like you have just installed it. This means you will have to configure the app from scratch. If you clear the data for the Facebook app, you will have to enter your username and password again. If you are about to do this for the game you are playing, all the settings, high-scores, and the other app’s data will be lost.

Go to Settings
Tap on Apps
Next, tap on the misbehaving app
Tap Clear data and then tap Force stop.

Wipe cache partition

By wiping the cache partition, you will remove all the junk and temporary files stored on your Android device. If some of the files are corrupted, the apps you are using can freeze or crash. You can also free up some space on your smartphone or tablet. You have to boot your device into recovery mode. Every smartphone has a different combination of keys that needs to be pressed. Here are the examples:

Samsung: Home, Power, and Volume down buttons

HTC and LG: Volume down and Power button

Nexus: Volume Down, Volume Up, and Power buttons.

Follow these steps:

Turn off your device
Press and hold the combination of keys (if you are using Nexus press and hold Volume Down, Volume Up, and the Power button)
Hold the buttons until the recovery menu shows up
Use Volume buttons to navigate to Recovery mode and select it using the Power button
In the Recovery mode menu, navigate to the Wipe cache partition and select it with the Power button
When this is completed, navigate to Reboot system now and select it using the Power button.

Free up some space

You may run into an issue if you don’t have enough free space on your smartphone or tablet. Do you have some apps you no longer use? If you do, uninstall them. To delete an app on an Android device:

Navigate to Settings
Tap Apps
Next, tap on the Downloaded tab
Tap on the app you wish to remove and tap Uninstall.

Reinstall the app

Sometimes, a reinstallation of the app can fix the problem. Everything is quite simple. First, you will have to delete the application by following the steps shown in the previous solutions. Once you do that, open Google Play, find the app download, and install it again.

Update the software

If there is a software glitch, you can get rid of it by installing the latest software version. A new version will improve the overall performance of your device and its security and it will also bring bug fixes. If you didn’t enable automatic updates on your device, you can see if there is an update manually:

Go to Settings
Scroll down and tap About device (About phone, About tablet)
Tap Software Update or System update.

Factory reset

If nothing seems to work, maybe your device desperately needs a fresh start. Factory data reset will wipe everything off, all the apps, settings, etc. Don’t forget to backup your files!

Go to Settings
Tap Backup & Reset
Next, tap Factory data reset
Tap Reset phone or Reset tablet.

How to stop apps from crashing?

There are several things you may do to avoid this issue and stop apps from crashing and freezing. Keep in mind that if an app is poorly coded, you won’t be able to do as much. If you tried all the solutions we have listed here, and nothing seems to work, delete that app. There are many fun and useful apps on Google Play so you can probably find a similar app. To stop apps from crashing:

Don’t use too many apps at once
Make sure your apps are up to date
Clear apps cache and data (at least for the apps you use frequently).
