App on iphone but no icon

Icons Randomly Missing on iPhone? Here’s a Fix

A peculiar issue can occur for some iPhone users where the icons on their device screen are missing. The icon names may or may not appear, or the icon badges may or may not appear, but the icon itself is usually gone.

Sometimes the entire bottom row of icons in the Dock are missing, along with other icons that are supposed to be on the iPhone Home Screen or within folders.

When the icons are missing, the places they should appear on the screen are still taken up, but they are not clickable, and nothing shows up there at all. It’s a very strange issue and it can be somewhat alarming. But don’t worry, if this happens to you the icons are not gone permanently.

So, does your iPhone screen look something like this, missing icons randomly?

If so, don’t panic.

Help, My iPhone Apps Icons Are Missing!

1: Reboot iPhone

The first thing you’ll want to do is reboot your iPhone.

A hard reboot is often the easiest thing to do, which is accomplished by pressing Volume Up, then Volume Down, then pressing and holding the Power button until you see the  Apple logo show up on screen.

Sometimes this alone can fix the missing icon problem, or the blank dock issue.

If the iPhone starts back up and is still missing icons (often they will be different icons missing after a reboot, like a fun game of musical chairs), the next thing to do is to clear up some storage space on the iPhone itself.

2: Clear up storage space

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and locate apps, videos, or other large data hogs, and remove them from the iPhone.

Make sure the iPhone has at least 1GB of storage space freely available.

Then reboot the iPhone again by turning it off and back on (or hard reboot again).

At this point the icons should be back on the screen as expected.

What’s going on here? Why does this happen?

Having personally encountered this issue several times with my iPhone 11 running various versions of iOS 14.6 and iOS 14.x, it’s a bit of a mystery as to what is going on. However, because clearing up storage space and a reboot seems to fix the problem, it could simply be a quirk of what happens when iPhone has run out of space and can’t figure itself out. In my experience, the phone ends up like this in the morning after the iPhone has been plugged in and unused over night, though it’s unclear what if anything that may have to do with why it happens.

It’s well known the iPhone starts dramatically underperforming and misbehaving when the devices storage is full, sometimes deleting photos, mail, apps (though this is a feature called Offload Apps which is separate from the issue mentioned here), and other data from the device. Or perhaps your contacts are seemingly lost, showing phone numbers instead of names as they should. It’s not always related, but try and always keep some storage space available on your device so that it performs well.

It appears that variations of this problem have shown up on Apple discussion boards for a while, so if it’s a bug then it may been longstanding and yet to be addressed. Nonetheless, try freeing up some storage space on your device, and then rebooting, it should work and the icons should be restored.

Question: Q: Can’t find app icon on iPhone

You checked all pages?

Is it in a folder?

Have you reached the max of 11 pages?

Dec 13, 2010 11:30 AM

I checked all pages and folders without success, then rebooted, also without success. Rebooted again, and . voila!

Just curious, if you reach the 11-page max, does it download the app but not display the icon?

Thanks for the response.

I haven’t even had the app icon appear since I made the purchase yesterday. I’ve rebooted, synced, screamed and stopped just short of crushing the phone in utter frustration.

If you have nothing but condescending comments, please refrain from replying to my request for help. If you wish to be kind to someone who is NOT tech savvy and would never presume to be so, please help. I HAVE used the search on the phone. I have gone to settings. I’ve opened my iTunes on the desktop and moved my apps from the old phone to the desktop. The issue for me, as a techno-idiot, is I cannot move the apps from the old phone to the new one. I THINK it is because there is no «APPS» folder available on my new device. I have been unsuccessful in determining how to make that happen.

Any kind advice is appreciated. If you are unable to respond in such, please don’t. there ARE those of us who need help and have no other resources at hand.

IF there is an 11 page limit, technically could the phone have 11 pages of folders with the folders all containing several apps within each folder? If so, the 11 page limit is meaningless unless some user wants a LOT OF APPS on their phone.

yes before folders it was 11 pages max now with folders you can have way more applications then you actually need

As I have the same issue, I still don’t see an answer to the actual question.

Can anyone answer simply how to find the app that is *missing*?

Sep 20, 2011 10:02 AM

Did you ever get an answer? I have the exact same problem and it’s driving me nuts!

Connect to iTunes, then remove the app from iTunes and sync. Then get it from the app store.

Hope This Helps.

Same thing happened to me and I was sure I had synced the app to my phone. I could find it by searching but it definitely wasn’t anywhere as an icon, alone or in a folder. Finally thought to check how many pages of icons I had haphazardly added (easiest to see in iTunes> your phone’s name when connected > apps, since they number the pages) and I had reached the 11 page limit. I organized most of my apps into folders and reduced down to 6 pages . Then had to reboot and lo and behold, there it was — along with half a page of icons for other apps that I had forgotten about and weren’t showing up before! 🙂 This is a hazard when you keep picking up games and apps when they go free for a while. I try to only keep a few on my phone (unchecking the rest in itunes>my phone when connected > apps) so I can test them out gradually, but it got away from me rather easily over the past year. I now have two folders full of «task lists» to try out, for instance! You can see I really do desperately need a proper task list, if I ever find time to find the right one. (Catch-22.)

Apple should incorporate a warning message when we reach that magic 11 page limit, at least . I like to be told by my gadgets when I’m about to do something stupid.

Missing the App Store Icon on iPhone in iOS 15? 3 Ways to Get It Back

What happens if you delete the App Store? The app can’t be deleted, so you just need to find the missing App Store.

If your App Store icon is missing and you’re wondering how to restore it, we’ve got great news for you. A missing App Store icon on iPhone doesn’t mean you deleted the app. While there are other native apps that you can delete, the App Store is not one of them. Our guide will show you how to reinstall the App Store or just find it on your iPhone.

No App Store Icon on iPhone? Get Help from Search

If you think you accidentally deleted the App Store, don’t worry: The App Store cannot be deleted, so it’s just a matter of finding out why the App Store icon is missing. One of the common causes for a missing App Store icon is that it’s inside a folder on your phone or hidden in the App Library. Rather than looking through each of your folders, using the Search tool is an easier way to find or «reinstall» the App Store icon:

  1. From the first page of your Home screen or your Lock screen, swipe from left to right to open Search.

Type App Store in the Search field. This should reveal the App Store in your search results.

Next to the App Store search result, you’ll see where the app is located. Mine, for example, is located in my «Extras» folder.

You can open the App Store right from Search, or you can navigate to the folder it’s in and open it there.

Restore Your Home Screen to Get App Store Back on Your iPhone

If your App Store didn’t show up in your search results, the next option is to restore your Home Screen to its default settings. It should be easier for you to find the App Store icon once it’s back to its original location:

  1. Open the Settings app.

Scroll down and tap on General.

Scroll all the way down and tap on Transfer or Reset iPhone.

Select Reset.

Tap Reset Home Screen.

Confirm that you want to reset your home screen to its factory default.

The Home Screen will be reverted to its default layout, and you should see the App Store icon restored.

App Store App Disappeared from Your Home Screen? Check Restrictions

If your App Store icon is still missing after searching for it and restoring your Home screen, it’s likely due to restrictions on your phone. Whether you placed these controls by choice or accidentally, it’s easy to change them back to let you access your App Store once again.

    Open the Settings app.

Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.

In the Screen Time menu, select Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Tap on iTunes & App Store Purchases.

If Installing Apps is set to “Don’t Allow”, tap on it.

Select Allow.

Go back one screen. If Deleting Apps is set to “Don’t Allow”, tap on it.

Select Allow.

  • When you go back to your Home screen, you should see your App Store icon once again.
  • Having access to your App Store icon is important. It allows you to download new apps and lets you keep your current apps updated. Once you’ve restored this handy icon, make a note of its location and your phone’s restrictions to ensure easy access to your App Store in the future. You can also find out how to use the App Store on other Apple devices, like your Apple TV. The Mail app has been known to dissapear from your iPhone, fix it here.
