What do I delete in order to restore Mail.app to its factory settings? I.E. Reset every thing and every setting.

/library/mail and the whole folder
means your home directory. you can get to it by clicking on the house icon in the sidebar of any finder window or by going to /users/username.

I did the same — deleted the Mail folder, all plists, etc and it fixed up my «poor Exchange download» issue immediately.
Before deleting the Library\Mail folder, I copied over my locally downloaded email folder (titled «work emails» to an external location. After restarting Mail and setting up my account, my Exchange email is working. All good so far!
I copy over the «work emails» folder back into Mail and restart Mail. It can see the local email folders, the hierarchy and all but it is not showing any emails in the folder.

Question: Q: How do I fully reset Mail.app?
I’m having nasty problems with Mail. I’m still running a (too) old OS X Server that handles mail (to be updated asap, but for now I have a problem on the client I need to fix). I had problems on the server that I have now fixed, but it required repairing stuff in IMAP ad that had already been downloaded by Mail.app. The only way to get Mail.app as far as to reload the data from the IMAP server seems to be to remove the account and recreate it. Now, here the fun starts.
— First Mail.app redirects me to iCloud settings, even if Mail has not been selected in iCloud settings (as managing Mail settings that way destroys proper settings, so all accounts also have ‘automatically maintain config’ turned off)
— I delete the account in System Preferences iCloud setting
— The account is removed there, but it is not removed in Mail.app (as Mail management via iCloud is turned off and/or because automatic settings management in Mail.app is turned off).
— I now have an account in Mail.app that I cannot remove anymore. Trying to do so in Mail.app preferences redirects me to System Preferences where the account has already been removed. So: stuck.
I tried all kinds of things, such as turning Mail account/settings management via iCloud on, turning iCloud settings management in Mail.app on, etc. etc. But nothing helps.
So, as a next step, I need to fully reset Mail.app, destroy all data and all settings and restart. How do I do that?

Would the below response still work for El Capitan 10.11 and Mail Version 9.0 for reseting Apple Mail?

Export your folders to your desktop, then import them after the reset. You may have to drag the imported messages to where you want them.

I followed these instructions but Mail wouldn’t let me re-add the email account, Settings > Internet Accounts and unchecking, rechecking Mail had no affect. However, removing all the previous Mail accounts completely and re-adding them has gotten Mail working like new.

Linc, Thanks for this, it’s not the first time you have been of indirect help to me and many others I assume.
This one tip was needed to get rid of a very nasty and persistent state of Mail, after a series of beta Yosemite previews and consequent updates. At one given moment the mail app must have had a tiny thingie nuked leaving it in an unusable state. No addition of an account was possible, not accounts that were set up in SysPrefs / Internet accounts were being loaded.
I now have my main bug resolved. Not really a bug, as another user account on the same machine had no problems, so I considered this to be a state of bad luck for the given account.

Just installed the 10.11 beta, everything works great EXCEPT Mail. its pretty useless. When open my entire system comes to a crawl. when I finally manage to close it, everything returns to normal. any tips?

If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you can’t send email from the Mail app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, there are a few things you can try.
Before you begin
There are a few things to keep in mind and check:
- When you make an iOS or iPadOS backup in iCloud or iTunes, it backs up your mail settings, but not your email. If you delete or change your email account settings, previously downloaded email might be removed from your device.
- Make sure that your device is connected to the internet.
- Check with your email service provider to find out if there’s a service outage.
- If you can’t access your email, or you can’t send and receive messages with your @icloud.com email address, learn what to do.
Check the Outbox for unsent email
If you get a message that says your email wasn’t sent, then that email goes to your Outbox. Check your Outbox and try to send the email again with these steps:
- In Mail, go to your list of mailboxes.
- Tap Outbox. If you don’t see an Outbox, then your email was sent.
- Tap an email in the Outbox. Make sure that the recipient’s email address is correct.
- Tap Send.
Check your email address and password
If Mail asks you to enter a password for your email account, make sure that your password is correct. To check your email address and password, sign in to your email provider’s website.
If you still get a user name or password error, contact your email provider or system administrator.
Contact your email provider or system administrator
- Contact your email provider or check their status webpage to see if there’s a service outage.
- Ask your email provider or system administrator if you turned on any security features or restrictions, like two-step verification, for your email account. You might need a special password or might need to request authorization from your email provider to send and receive email on your device.
- Check your email account settings with your email provider or system administrator to make sure that they’re correct.
Remove your email account and set it up again
- On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than on your iOS or iPadOS device.
- On your device, go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts.
- Tap the email account that you want to remove.
- Tap Delete Account.
- Add your account again.
If the steps in this article don’t help, contact your email service provider for more information.
