Cinnamon Baked Apple Slices – Warm Cinnamon Apples
Posted on Published: 10/17/2018
These cinnamon baked apple slices have a thick brown sugar glaze but is not too sweet, since I used tart Granny Smith apples.
Ever since I was a little girl, apples and pork were flavors that I really loved.
I often make homemade applesauce to go with a pork dish but for tonight’s dinner, I am using apple slices instead.
What is a good substitute for applesauce as a side dish for pork?
Applesauce is often used with pork as a side dish. But the texture of it is usually quite thin and many store bought applesauce brands don’t have a lot of flavor.
This dish for sliced baked apples gives the flavor of applesauce but with a lovely texture that comes from baking the slices and not mashing it all up. And the flavor? TO-DIE-FOR!
This side dish has the taste of my hasselback baked apples but is much easier to make, since you are flavoring just the apple slices.
I like to make this recipe with Granny Smith apples. They hold up well in the oven and have a nice texture. You can make so many things with apples, especially when the texture is firm.
If you have ever eaten just the filling of Granny’s apple pie, you will get an idea of this recipe. Thick, gooey, sweet, tart and everything that is good in the fall.
The baked apple slices recipe seems sort of like an apple pie without the crust side dish, but is every bit as good as the pie itself.
Apples are my favorite fall fruit. I make apple pies, caramel apples, spooky apple treats, baked apples, apple crisp, apple cake, apple cobbler and now – sliced baked apples.
You name it. If the recipe is made from apples, it will find its way to my dinner table.
These cinnamon baked apple slices are the perfect side dish to compliment pork.
The ingredients for these easy baked apple slices are just a few. The recipe has only five ingredients and one of them is water!
A couple of Granny Smith apples, some water, with cornstarch to thicken it, a scoop of brown sugar and a pinch of cinnamon are all that you need to complete the recipe.
I love that it is easy, simple, but so, so tasty when the the baked Granny Smith apple slices are done!
I started the recipe for baked apple slices by mixing the cornstarch and water in a small bowl. This mixture will thicken the other ingredients into an ooey-gooey texture.
I also peeled my apples and sliced them fairly thickly. You don’t want them too thin or they will end up overcooked.
Place the sliced apples in an ovenproof baking dish and pour over the cornstarch and water mixture. You will want to coat the apples well.
Pour in the brown sugar and mix the apples well with it. You will want some of the sugar to stick to each apple, since this is what the cornstarch mixture will thicken.
Have you ever started a recipe only to discover that your brown sugar has hardened? No problem! These 6 easy tips for softening brown sugar are sure to help.
Sprinkle the top of the ingredients with a generous pinch or two of cinnamon to give it some extra fall like taste.
Into the oven they go for about 15 minutes at 350º F. Baking apple slices is that easy! Look at the gooey glaze! I can’t wait to try them! The baked apple slices with cinnamon are fork tender and sweet but the tartness of the apples keeps the sweetness in check. Cinnamon the kitty approves of the taste very much!
This cute kitty is part of my spice jars called Cats of Distinction by Lenox. I was amazed, recently, to find that they are quite collectible!
Serve the quick baked apple slices hot with pork chops for a comfort food dish that really screams fall.
Gone are the days of boring applesauce and pork. These cinnamon baked apple slices and pork and definitely my new fall combo. Perhaps they will become yours too!
One bite of these sweet apples and you will be hooked! They tick the box in so many ways. The apples are:
- Sweet and tender
- Flavored with cinnamon in a rich brown sugar glaze
- They are super satisfying
- Lighter than an apple pie and so delicious!
The yummy warm baked apple are great on their own, but extra yummy with a dollop of whip cream or some ice cream.
They make a wonderful side dish, a super tasty snack and a great after work out treat.
These baked apple slices have a lovely brown sugar and cinnamon glaze that could not be easier to make. They are the perfect choice when you have a hankering for the taste of apple pie, but don’t have the time to make one.
And if you are trying to omit the calories of a pie crust, you can get your apple pie fix in just minutes by baking just the apple slices.
The recipe is naturally gluten free and has 188 calories per serving – MUCH less than a slice of apple pie with most of the flavor!

EASY Baked Apple Slices
Baked apple slices recipe with fresh apple slices, baked with sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

No time to make an apple pie? No desire for a crust? You can get your apple pie fix quickly just with baked apple slices!
My parents have three apple trees on which we grow 15 varieties of apples, so we are always looking for quick and easy apple recipes.
My mother started baking apple slices this way for an everyday dessert a few years ago and it is what we have almost every night during apple season.
How to make baked apple slices
It’s so easy! All you have to do is toss some slices of peeled and cored apples with cinnamon and sugar and put them in the microwave for few minutes.
When the apple slices are cooked through, give them a quick stir with a sprinkle of maple syrup.
We did struggle with what to call it. Mom wanted, «apple pie without the crust», but we nixed that. «Apple pie filling» didn’t go over very well either.
«Baked apple slices» is as near as we can come, even though they aren’t baked in the oven but cooked rather quickly in a microwave.
Don’t have a microwave? Put the apples and cinnamon sugar in a baking dish, add a 1/3 cup of water to the pan, cover it with foil and bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender.

EASY Baked Apple Slices
As you slice up the apples, check for their flavor. If they don’t taste good raw, believe me, they aren’t going to taste good cooked.
Ingredients
4 cups of peeled, sliced apples — use apples that cook up well, like Fuji or Jonagold
3 tablespoons sugar
A sprinkle of cinnamon
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Method
Put apple slices in a glass bowl. Sprinkle on top the 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add a light sprinkle of cinnamon.
Bake in microwave oven for 5 minutes on high heat. Adjust the time for your microwave and how many apples you are doing. Ours has a powerful high setting so 4 cups of apples only takes 5 minutes.
If you use more apples, you will probably need to cook it a little longer. I suggest starting with 5 minutes and testing for doneness with a fork. If it needs more cooking time, give it more.
When done, remove and mix so the sugar coats the apple pieces. Add maple syrup to taste, about 1 tablespoon.
To serve, add whipped cream on the top or vanilla ice cream on the side.

This was marvelous! I’m certain it would be delightful as written but I made a change in the apples used. After apple picking a few weeks ago some of the crisp, sweet apples became grainy. I used those rather than tossing. I couldn’t tell you the variety as they all get mixed up. I mixed up the slices with everything but forgot the sugar and they were already in the baking pan! No worries, sprinkling a little less overtop and stirring in after removing the foil, worked out perfectly! I’ll make this again. yummy.

Apple and Cinnamon Phyllo Slices
Many a time, we are on the look out for simple edibles that we can create in a short span with minimal efforts. One such afternoon when I was in no mood to indulge in anything tedious, and was wondering what to do, my mind wandered to the phyllo pastry lying in my refrigerator. A recipe I had read on the backcover of a carton suddenly flashed in my mind. A quick glance towards my fruit basket revealed fresh and juicy red apples. I also remembered a pot of cinnamon powder lying in my store cupboard. What more could I ask for? Some butter and sugar and I was on my way, making these lovely slices. Crisp, tasty and simple is how I would describe them.
This is really simple to make and the next time around I’m going to be experimenting a bit. Substituting the butter with almond or walnut oil and maybe introducing some dry fruits like almond or walnuts between the apple slices.
Phyllo pastry is one of the most versatile things I have come across. It can be used for sweet and savoury dishes with myriad combinations. These sheets are not easily available in India. One of my friends who resides in the US and who uses phyllo quite often offered to send it to me, in her excitement completely oblivious to storage regulations for it to reach me from a place thousands of miles away, in an intact and usable form. Fortunately I came across phyllo in a gourmet store in Mumbai, exorbitantly priced but nevertheless gave me a chance to experiment. Unfortunately they have stopped stocking it and that means I cant play around with phyllo as much as I would like to, atleast until I come across another source.
More about Phyllo here.
Apple and Cinnamon Phyllo Slices Recipe
These slices are quick and easy to assemble. They heat well and can even be served cold or at room temperature. They taste delicious when served hot alongwith a scoop of good vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients:
8 sheets of phyllo pastry
4 apples
100 gm melted butter
50 gm castor sugar or icing sugar
¼ tsp cinnamon powder
Extra butter for dotting
Method:
Peel, core and slice apples thinly lengthwise. Mix the sugar and the cinnamon powder. Brush each sheet of phyllo pastry with the melted butter using a pastry brush and layer them one above the other. Cut into equal square slices depending on the desired size. Arrange the sliced apples on top so that they overlap each other. Dot with butter and sprinkle half the sugared cinnamon powder.
Preheat the oven for atleast 10 minutes. Bake at 180 degrees C for about 25 minutes to ½ an hour. To make them extra crisp sprinkle the remaining sugared cinnamon and bake at 200 degrees C for another 10 minutes until brown and crisp.
