Set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad with your Mac
If your Apple wireless devices came with a new iMac, turn the devices on to begin using them. If you bought the devices separately or if you need to pair them with your Mac again, follow these steps.
Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad work wirelessly with your Mac via Bluetooth when they’re paired and turned on.
If your devices came with a new iMac, they’re already paired with the computer. Just turn them on when you first turn on your Mac. To make sure that your device is turned on, check its power switch. If green is visible, the device is on.
If you bought your devices separately — or if they’ve become unpaired from your Mac — follow the steps below to pair them.
How to set up your wireless device
Follow these steps to set up your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad:
- Connect a Lightning to USB Cable 1 or a USB-C to Lightning Cable to the Lightning port on the device 2 and connect the other end of the cable to your Mac.
- Make sure that the device’s power switch is in the ON position. (Green is visible under the switch when the device is on.)
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth to open the Bluetooth preferences window. When the device pairs with your Mac, it appears in the list of devices.
- Check the Bluetooth preferences window to see your device’s charge level. When the device is charged, unplug it for wireless use.
1. If your Bluetooth device came with an iMac, a Lightning to USB cable was also included in the box.
2. Magic Mouse can’t be used while connected to the cable.
If your device won’t connect
If you’re unable to connect your device, learn what to do.
How to set up earlier Apple wireless devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn’t have a Lightning port, use a wired mouse or trackpad — or the built-in trackpad if you’re using a Mac notebook — then follow these steps to set up your earlier Apple wireless devices (such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad):
- Turn on your device.
- Wait until your device’s LED starts blinking, which means that it’s in Discoverable Mode. (If the LED is on but not blinking, your device is already paired with another host. To unpair it, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Hover the pointer over the device you want to remove, then click the button that appears next to the device’s name. Turn the device off, then start again at step 1.)
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth.
- Wait while your Mac searches for your device. When your device appears in Bluetooth preferences, click Pair 1 .
1. Apple Wireless Keyboard requires the passcode that appears on your Mac. Enter the 8-digit passcode on the keyboard, then press Return. Earlier models of Apple Wireless Mouse or Apple Magic Trackpad will connect automatically or show a dialog. If you see a dialog, click Pair or press Return.

If you can’t connect your Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad to your Mac
Try these steps to resolve issues with your Magic accessories.
Turn the device off and on
Magic Mouse has a switch on the bottom of the device, and Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad have a switch on the back edge of the device. Slide the switch to turn off the device (no green is visible), then slide the switch back to turn on the device (green becomes visible).
Earlier Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Trackpad models have a power button on the right side of the device. Hold the button until the green LED on the top of the device turns off, then press the button again until you see the green LED to turn the device on.
Make sure Bluetooth is turned on
Using your Mac notebook’s built-in trackpad or a USB mouse, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
If the Bluetooth icon doesn’t appear, or if the menu bar status continues to indicate that Bluetooth is off, restart your computer and then try to turn Bluetooth on again.
Connect the Lightning cable
Connect your wireless accessory to your Mac with the Lightning to USB Cable or USB-C to Lightning Cable, wait 1 minute, then disconnect the cable. This pairs the accessory with your Mac and charges the built-in battery. To check your accessory’s charge level, click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, then click Bluetooth.
Earlier models don’t use a Lightning cable for charging, but have batteries that you replace. Learn how to pair those devices with your Mac.
Check for wireless interference
If your accessory won’t stay connected wirelessly, there might be interference with other wireless devices. Learn how to resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference.

Force Pairing (Connecting) an Apple bluetooth keyboard to an iPad (iOS device)
How to Force Pair (Connect) an Apple bluetooth keyboard to an iPad (iOS device)
The Problem:
Apple devices are common place in my home, and occasionally we like to connect a single shared Apple bluetooth keyboard to one of the iPads. If the bluetooth keyboard was last connected to another device that is within range and turned on, the normal steps to pair a bluetooth keyboard to an iPad will typically not work. The problem is because the keyboard immediately exits pairing mode as it connects to the other, unintended device. This can make the activity of pairing the keyboard to the intended device a bit frustrating.
The Solution:
Simply continue to hold the power button down on the bluetooth keyboard after the power LED light begins to flash. This will keep the keyboard in pairing mode and prevent it from automatically connecting to the last device it was paired/connected to.
General steps to pair an Apple keyboard to an iPad:
- Turn off the Apple keyboard by pressing the power button for three seconds.
- Ensure bluetooth is enabled on the iPad/iOS device you wish to connect: Settings > Bluetooth.
- On the Apple bluetooth keyboard, press and hold the power button. After about 5 seconds the keyboard power indicator (LED) will begin to flash indicating the keyboard is in pairing mode.
- To force pairing: Keep pressing the power button on the keyboard as you continue .
- On your desired iOS device, when the desired “Apple Wireless Keyboard” device appears in the list of discovered bluetooth devices on your iPad/iDevice, tap/select it to connect.
- The iPad will then prompt you with a 4-digit code to enter on the keyboard. You can now stop pressing the power button on the keyboard.
- On the keyboard, enter the 4-digit code and press the enter/return key. Your iPad should now be connected to the iPad.
I hope this helps.
Below are a few articles I found interesting and useful on using an Apple keyboard with your iPad.
- Reference for every character on a Mac (iPad)
- iPad Accessibility (Command-Tab on your iPad)
If you really want ultimate control of your iPad from your keyboard. There is a downside to this, but I found it interesting nonetheless.

The driver situation with Apple Bluetooth wireless keyboards and Windows 10 is horrible, even with the latest BootCamp drivers. Fortunately, a workaround is available, if you’re patient.
Pair keyboard once
- Turn on the keyboard.
- Press and hold Command + w until the keyboard light begins blinking, indicating the keyboard is ready to pair.
- Use Windows Bluetooth settings to pair the keyboard, entering the same code (e.g. 123456 Enter ) on both internal and external keyboards.
Pairing the keyboard is very trial and error. 9/10 times, Windows will complain that the keyboard is not available for pairing. Just keep trying.
Finally, once the keyboard does pair, Windows will complain with a status Driver error .
Uninstall Apple keyboard driver
- Launch Device Manager , such as from the Start menu.
- Identify the offending device, marked by a yellow warning triangle.
- Remove the device and uninstall the driver.
- Reboot.
Pair keyboard again
Unpair and re-pair the keyboard, will probably take 20 more attempts.
Verify keyboard connectivity
Once the keyboard has paired, after uninstalling the keyboard driver, you can check whether the keyboard is finally fully connected, by pressing the Command (Start) button, etc.

Thank you «both internal and external keyboards.» I wasted like 30 minutes on this.

Hi everyone — Just wanted to confirm that these instructions actually do work. Inexplicably. As the OP says, you have to keep going through the same process multiple times, and Windows keeps refusing to see the keyboard. Then, suddenly, it will start to behave. In my instance, it did not throw any driver errors once connected. This might be because I recently ran a batch of Windows system updates.
Two things for people to know. These are mentioned in the instructions, but they bear repeating. #1. You need to type the PIN on both keyboards. First, enter a PIN into the wired keyboard. Then, enter the PIn into your wireless keyboard. Be prepared for it not to connect, but don’t give up. #2. The PIN can be anything you want. At first, I was trying 12345678, but then I shortened it to a six digit number. Can’t believe it actually worked! Thank you!

just got that situation with windows bluetooth not being able to give me back my pin numbers from scratch. BTW the both «internal external keyboard» mentionned above is actually doing or typing «the fictive passcode» with both keyboards mac AND the pc keyboard many times yes then it is going to work. The mac keyboard is waiting for you to do so. Thanks a lot for all theses anwsers!

After trying 15 times in vain, here is the method that worked for me (source)
- Go to «Add Bluetooth or other device»
- Find the wireless keyboard and hit connect.
- When prompted for a pin, enter anything on the screen, I used «123123». I dont know what else will work.
NOW IS THE IMPORTANT PART. - HIT ‘Connect’ and IMMEDIATELY enter ‘123123’+ENTER on the wireless apple keyboard, and you should be paired. ‘
- If you have issues, turn off bluetooth and restart the wireless keyboard and repeat the process.

@pandyarohan — thank you so much. Have wasted 2 hours today searching various sites, removing batteries, pressing cmd W, etc — no luck . Then your solution worked 1st time:-)

Thank you so much, i have been trying to do this for a very long time.

To make a clarification on above,
When you see keyboard from windows,
- Click keyboard and connect
- It asks you to put PIN — type 123123 and connect
- Windows tries to pair with keyboard.
- Type 123123 and hit return on your apple keyboard
- Done

@pandyarohan Just would like to give you a thanks! It works for me as well.
farrotpod commented Feb 26, 2020 •
@pandyarohan — you legend. After weeks of not being able to use my main PC — you have saved me from having to ditch my Apple Wireless Keyboard and buying a new keyboard.
Just to add — if you don’t have a wired keyboard to hand for you to enter a PIN when prompted to do so in the bluetooth set-up — the on-screen keyboard can be accessed via ‘ease of access’ tab on the bottom right of the login screen after boot-up and then used to type in the PIN.

(West Cork Ireland 29th April 2020) I WANT TO THANK PEOPLE FOR THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS. My difficulty with my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard connecting to my Windows 10 computer started yesterday. By this morning I was almost depressed at my difficulty. I worried for a while that the suggestion to try again and again was nonsense. On about 3 occasions I gave up. But then I tired one more time and altered my practice in line with a suggestion above. I entered the code 123123 on the computer and pressed connected BEFORE entering the code 123123 on the keyboard and pressing enter and suddenly it worked. It was like magic. So in those circumstances I felt I had to thank people for their suggestions and to — as it were — try to give hope to people not to give up. Because if you like me find the feel of the Apple keyboard very pleasant to use, you do not want to give it up lightly.
