Apple Bread

The aroma of cinnamon and baked apples will waft through your kitchen once you pop this delicious and easy-to-make Apple Bread in the oven.

Nothing screams fall like the scent of baked apples and cinnamon filling your kitchen. This Apple Bread is a seasonal twist on a classic coffee cake. It’s moist and buttery, with a touch of spice and a crumbly streusel topping. So, there’s everything to love.

Who said you can’t have cake for breakfast? Apple Bread is a great, indulgent breakfast alongside a hot cup of coffee or tea. You can also serve it for dessert with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top.

You probably have everything you need in your house to make this recipe, so it is perfect if you’re looking to bake something tasty on a whim. If you’re going apple picking this season, it is also the perfect way to use up those fresh, crispy apples.

The Best Apples for this Recipe

You want to use firm, crispy apples that will hold their structure under heat. Some varieties that work well are Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Cortland, and Golden Delicious. Steer clear of softer varieties, like McIntosh and Macoun.

Tips and Tricks for the Best Possible Apple Bread

This apple bread is considered a quick bread, which means it should be pretty easy to pull together. Just adhere to these tips to ensure that you get the perfect loaf every time.

  • Keep the butter, eggs, milk, and yogurt at room temperature. This will give you a smoother batter without any chunks.
  • Use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer. It will be much more difficult to create a smooth batter if you are mixing by hand.
  • Don’t over-mix the batter. Use a low speed on your hand or stand mixer and mix until the ingredients are just combined.
  • Line the pan with parchment paper. This will make it much easier to remove the cake after baking.
  • Be careful not to over-measure the flour! When you measure flour, you want it to be light and fluffy, not packed, and dense. Use a fork or spoon to fluff the flour in its container before scooping it up in your measuring cup.

Ingredient Swaps and Variations for Apple Bread

One reason why I love this Apple Bread recipe is because it is customizable based on your flavor preferences and the ingredients you have on hand. Here are some ways you can change the recipe and make it your own.

  • If you don’t have any Greek yogurt on hand, sour cream will work in its place.
  • If you’re a pumpkin spice lover, feel free to swap the cinnamon in the batter for pumpkin spice.
  • You can add 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to your apple cake to give it some crunch.

How to Store Apple Bread

Apple bread will keep for 3 days in a sealed container at room temperature. If you want to make the bread ahead of time, you can wrap it in aluminum foil, place it in a sealed bag, and freeze it for up to three months. Just let the frozen cake thaw at room temperature for 2-3 hours before serving.

Recipe Ingredients

Everything you need to make this bread is probably already in your kitchen! The recipe is classic, simple and fail-proof.

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Milk: To keep your bread moist while adding extra apple flavor, use applesauce instead of milk! Either option works great!
  • Apples: Peel, core and chop up your apples for the best flavor in every bite.

What Kind of Apples Should I Use?

I recommend using a crisper type of apple for this recipe. Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples are excellent options! If you can’t go out and pick your own apples, you can easily find one of these varieties at the grocery store. The cinnamon and sugar add plenty of sweetness to this bread, so try to use tart kinds of apples rather than sweet ones. For even more flavor, you could also use two different kinds of apple.

Do I Need to Peel the Apples?

Definitely peel your apples before you bake with them. Otherwise, the skin can separate from the fruit during the baking process, which messes with the wonderful texture of this bread.

How to Make Apple Bread

  1. Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9×5 loaf pan very well with non-stick baking spray.
  2. Whisk Dry Ingredients: In a medium size bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Whisk together to combine, then set aside.
  3. Whisk Wet Ingredients: Combine the melted butter, sugars, eggs, vanilla extract and milk/applesauce and whisk together to combine.
  4. Combine Wet & Dry Ingredients: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir to combine. Don’t over-mix.
  5. Add Apples: Fold in the chopped apples.
  6. Bake: Pour your batter into the loaf pan and bake for 60-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  7. Let Cool: Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Tips for the Best Apple Bread

  • Don’t Over-Mix: When adding your dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stir until just combined. Over-mixing the batter can result in overly dense apple bread.
  • Grease Pan Well: This bread is super moist, so make sure you grease your loaf pan completely. You don’t want the bread to fall apart or get stuck in the pan when you transfer it to a cooling rack.

How to Store Homemade Apple Bread

There’s no need to store your bread in the fridge. You can keep it on the counter as long as it’s well covered. Tightly wrap it with plastic wrap or store it in a sealed airtight container.

There is nothing better than a slice of warm apple bread with butter and a cup of tea on a dark fall night. In fact, I’ll be honest, I just love fall flavors in general; like a delicious spiced pumpkin pie and these apple oatmeal bars. My pumpkin spice mix sure gets a lot of usage every time fall is upon us!

I am an advocate for eating fruit and berries raw. But for the last 11 years I happen to live in a house with an apple tree. And since we do not spray our trees, some apples have bugs and worms. It’s the perfect excuse to bake awesome apple bread (and make lots and lots of applesauce in my Instant Pot).

I’ve even recently been enjoying this braised cabbage and apples dish; the combination of sweet and savory is delicious!

Ingredients for Apple Quick Bread

How to Make Healthy Apple Bread

What are the best apples to use for apple bread?

To be honest, you can use any apples with a bit of tartness to them. For example, McIntosh, Granny Smith, Fuji. More sweet variety like Gala and Red Delicious would work too.

Every region has different varieties that are popular. I have no idea what my apples are haha. They are a bit tart – all the better to enjoy in sweet treats!

Bonus! You do not have to peel the apples either for this quick healthy apple bread!

  1. Dice the apples. The most important tip for delicious apple bread is to take time and dice the apples. So every bite you take has lots of apples. Remember, no peeling.
  2. Whisk eggs, wet ingredients and spices together in a large bowl. There is no need for 2 bowls if you make sure baking powder and soda are completely dissolved. Whisk until no lumps are floating.
  3. Add flour and stir gently. The top of measuring cup with flour should be flat. And when mixing the batter, give it 10 seconds to absorb before stirring again.
  4. Add apple chunks and stir just enough to mix in. I doubled the recipe so that is why my bowl was so full.
  5. Bake for 60-70 minutes in preheated 350 degrees F oven. We have lots of juicy apples in here, so it takes a bit longer to bake an apple bread.

Optional Add-In’s and Variations

  • Applesauce can be substituted with an equal amount of finely grated raw carrots or zucchini. No need to squeeze anything. Like the sound of that? then you might also like this healthy zucchini bread or carrot muffins.
  • Flour has to be wheat and whole grain like whole wheat or spelt flour. I have not tested this homemade apple bread with all-purpose flour. From my experience, I know that baking is precise. You can’t use gluten free flours like almond, coconut etc. If gluten free is a concern, try these flourless oatmeal muffins with applesauce and sliced apples! If avoiding grains, try these almond blueberry muffins.
  • Sweetener in a liquid form like agave, brown rice syrup, date syrup etc. is acceptable. This bread is not overly sweet. If you like very sweet bread, increase amount to 3/4 cup.
  • Use any oil like avocado oil, coconut oil (melted) or olive oil. Because we use only 2 tbsps, which oil you use doesn’t matter.
  • Vary your warm spices. Try ground allspice for nutmeg or try apple pie spice mix. One reader added ginger then added crystallized ginger on top before baking!

Tips for Best Apple Quick Bread

  • If you like very sweet bread, increase maple syrup (or preferred liquid sweetener) amount to 3/4 cup.
  • Apple bread bakes faster in dark loaf pan than in light or glass one.
  • Add up to 1/4 cup of raisins, walnuts, pumpkin seeds or any other mix-ins.
  • Bake as muffins at 375 degrees F for 22-25 minutes.
  • Batter will be thick when making this bread! Don’t be alarmed by that and add extra ingredients to compensate, the recipe as written with ingredients will release some ‘juices/water’ as it bakes, and your bread will turn out amazing.

Bread will be much easier to slice if you let it cool to barely warm. It has a lot of apples.

Over mixing can lead to additional gluten development which will result in an overly dense bread. Try to also grease your loaf pan completely.

Apple butter is sweeter and already spiced, so your bread will be sweeter and spicier, but that should work as as a substitute for applesauce.

The culprit is usually over mixing. The best tip for preventing that happening in this apple bread recipe is to stir gently. Wait 10 seconds then stir again.

While we have not tested it with other fruit, diced pears would probably work.

While all apple varieties vary in size, the general rule of thumb is that there are three medium sized apples in a pound and two larger sized apples equals a pound. A pound of apples shredded is approximately 3 cups. For this recipe, you need 4 cups diced apples – again depending on your apple size this could be anywhere from 3 – 5 apples.

Serving Recommendations

I love to eat this bread slightly warm right out of the oven! Here are a few others ways to enjoy it.

  • Top with your favorite nut butter: Peanut, almond, cashew, they all work. Apples and peanut butter are a match made in heaven!
  • Apple bread toast: Gently toast a slice in a skillet with a small amount of butter.
  • Apple bread french toast: Make an egg batter, dip your sliced apple cinnamon bread and ‘fry’ gently on stovetop. This will work best after your bread is a few days old.
  • Apple yogurt parfait: Layer crumbled bread with yogurt, pecans or walnuts and a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Brunch: Include on a brunch charcuterie board.
  • Apple loaf cake: Drizzle with Greek yogurt icing for a healthy dessert!

Making Apple Cinnamon Bread in Advance

Storing: Day 1-2: I like to place cooled apple bread back into the loaf pan and keep covered with a towel on the counter. Sliced bread dries out faster. Day 3-5: Day 3-5 if you have any bread left at this point, refrigerate it tightly wrapped in plastic or in a plastic bag.

Freezing: Freeze baked and cooled bread in a plastic bag for up to 3 months. Thaw on a counter for 3-4 hours. Again, it’s better to freeze apple bread loaf whole and not sliced.
