Question: Q: -3403D error when attempting Apple Hardware Test

I want to perform an Apple Hardware Test. I restarted, pressed option+D, and a globe appeared. After a minute, however, the following text appeared:

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 2.53 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM

I experience frequent crashes with » GPUPanic.cpp:127 » in the crash log. There is a problem related to switching between the internal Intel graphics and the Nvidia graphics. I have spoken to the local Apple retailer, which will repair the computer free of charge soon.

I do not know, however, whether this issue is related to the -340D error.

Have you found out any more information? I have this same MacBook and am experiencing this same error when trying to run diagnostics. I purchased mine recently from Mac of All Trades.

Your Macbook Pro came with OS X 10.6.x and to run Apple Hardware Test you can use bundled with your Macbook Pro Application Disc:

Your Macbook Pro probably was upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery as some of the Mac which came with 10.6.x did have that option. It seems like, some of the models might have problem to access Internet AHT:

Not sure what error -340D means but if you haven’t tried yet, i would suggest to turn OFF your router and after 2-3 mins turn ON again. Try with different network as very often issues with starting Mac in Internet Recovery are caused by network settings. This could be the same issue.

Question: Q: Error code -3403D on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

This thing has been a terrific workhorse for nearly 7 years. Only thing I’ve had done was a new power supply in 2013 and had the hard drive replaced in an apple authorised store last year.

It’s not starting up, it gets nearly through the startup bar on the apple screen then comes up with the grey screen then restarts.

I have run disk first aid via firewire on my imac 27 and it says the hard drive is fine.

So I tried to run AHT but it won’t run off the cd. Tried to run it from the internet (Command D) but again no luck — except this time it gave me that error message -3403D. Does anybody know what it means? And what I should do about it — and about it not starting?

Not sure, if you have done a NVRAM/PRAM reset or SMC reset give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

Also just to make sure the you have to press only «Option» key while booting from USB drive.

Thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately I’ve already tried that option too. I am trying to get AHT to run from cd but it just automatically connects to apple.com/support when pressing D or option D on startup. Is there any other way of running AHT from the cd at all?

I’ve tried those options already but still no joy.

Try booting into Safe Mode:

Is Filevault enabled on this laptop?

Jul 15, 2020 10:47 AM

After having tried the safe mode, it just hangs on the apple screen when the bar is loading.

I am not sure if Filevault is enabled. I think I probably wouldn’t have done this. Is there any way of disabling it on startup?

Jul 15, 2020 3:19 PM

When you boot the computer do you get the login prompt right away or do you have a progress bar before you see the login prompt? The reason I’m asking about Filevault is I’ve encountered an issue with missing user accounts and if a user account goes «missing» and Filevault is enabled, then you get the non-stop reboots when the progress bar gets near 100%.

Check the health of the hard drive. I don’t know if you can do this over Firewire, but you can try running DriveDx to see it can access the health information on the drive. Post the complete DriveDx report here using the «Additional Text» icon which looks like a piece of paper.

If you cannot access the drive’s health information over Firewire, then create a Knoppix Linux USB drive using Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux). Option Boot the Knoppix USB drive and select the orange icon labeled «EFI». While Knoppix is booting the computer may appear frozen on the boot picker menu so give Knoppix lots of time to finish booting.

At the Knoppix desktop click on the «Start» menu icon on the lower left corner of the Taskbar and navigate the menus to «System Tools —> GSmartControl». Within the GSmartControl app double-click on the drive’s icon to access the drive’s health information. Post the complete health report here. GSmartControl also allows you to run the drive’s internal self diagnostics.

Another advantage to booting Knoppix is it can give you an idea if the hardware on the laptop is actually working.

Question: Q: what is error code -3403D?

I recently just purchased another refurbished 15″ MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) Model with 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB. It came pre-loaded with Snow Leopard 10.6. I upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and then I started having the computer randomly restart on me several times. I have gotten Kernal Panic messages once I could get the machine to reboot. I have read countless forums since and have heard that the logic boards were recalled some time ago. I have also heard that Yosemite could be the problem. I have no idea which is the exact culprit. I have wiped the hard drive 2 or 3 times now using the Recovery feature (Command R) and have wiped the hard drive. I have rebooted it and reinstalled OS X Yosemite. I also have a copy of Snow Leopard 10.6 that I have had for a few years now. I attempted to install it instead of Yosemite but it will not do anything. It simply does not work. So I contacted Mac Of All Trades (where I purchased the computer) and they suggested I reset the PRAM and SMC. I did both those things but the restarting still occurs. They also suggested I do a AHT (Apple Hardware Test). When I tried to do it pressing Option D, it started an internet recovery process and asked me what WiFi network I wanted to choose. I chose my network and entered my password. Shortly after it gave me «apple.com/support -3403D.» Does anyone know what that means? It also will not run the AHT or Apple Diagnostics. I cannot figure out why or why I cannot fully wipe out my hard drive and install Snow Leopard 10.6. I cannot figure out why it keeps restarting and giving me Kernal Panic messages. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I also did not back it up on my Time Machine before upgrading to Yosemite (I know dumb. ) but I used Migration Assistant to transfer my programs from my older MacBook Pro to this one using a Time Machine backup. Thank you again.

Question: Q: -3403D error

Id like to run an Internet AHT (no DVD with me)on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro but this message always appears:

Anyone knows about this error?

Thanks for your help

Try booting the MBP with the OPTION+D keys. It may work.

If you had the original install DVDs, you would not have this problem. Duplicates can be obtained from Apple Customer service.

Same here. MacBook Pro mid-2010. Having problems since Yosemite install a month or two ago. Nothing happens when I try to boot holding down the d key. The system just sits until I release the d key, at which time it reboots in normal mode. Option-d causes the error everyone else is getting here.

To use the internet for the apple hardware test, your Mac had to ship with at least Lion. Otherwise you have to have the install dvd that came with the Mac. Not a retail version, but the machine specific software. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Nov 30, 2015 6:06 PM

This is straight from someone at Apple, » That -3403D code actually means there was an issue with your Mac software configuration «

Feb 4, 2016 10:07 PM

To all that get that code. It means your Mac cannot do the hardware test from the internet. You need the install disk that has the hardware test on it. Then you boot it and hold down D or Command D at startup.

Feb 4, 2016 10:29 PM

Very strange i am having the same today? Coincidence?! I am trying internet recovery.

Feb 5, 2016 8:28 AM

my ginger’s solution is what worked for me. I can’t do internet recovery on my mac—it’s a bit too old. I used the dvd that came with the mac and that worked fine. Showed no hardware errors, but worked. The overall problem I was having was with the video card. Got that replaced and I’m back in business.

Created bootable El Capitan USB / Installed fresh version of El Capitan / Restored data with Time Machine / Voila

Feb 7, 2016 12:09 PM

I have this same issue but mine has lines on it won’t let me boot up regarly any more.

Feb 25, 2016 11:06 PM

I first also had trouble. Funny thing was that with the power connected the led in the connector near the laptop was not green or range but not doing anything. Then I disconnected the connector to the white square block (with power still connected) and the led was again green. Very strange! Then the laptop booted and I could do the restore process ( Created bootable El Capitan USB / Installed fresh version of El Capitan / Restored data with Time Machine ).

Feb 26, 2016 2:46 AM

While this may be true, it is odd that the machine appears to attempt to load the hardware test (it goes through all the correct motions before bringing us to the -3404D error). Further, why not simply give a message like, «Sorry, hardware test via the internet is not supported on this Mac,» rather than some unhelpful, cryptic message?

Finally, determining if your computer supports loading Apple Hardware Diagnostics over the internet isn’t necessarily easy to do using the info from Apple. Quoted from their webpage, » Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT. «

Some? How helpful is that? Why don’t we throw in «may» and «possibly» and how about «we don’t really know» for good measure.

I have an early 2011 MBP 13 that does do the AHT over the internet, and a Mid 2010 that doesn’t, so for the 13s that appears to be the cutoff. How hard was that, Apple? FFS

Mar 2, 2016 1:48 AM

2010 and older Mac’s that run Snow Leopard or older. Have to use the install disk for AHT. Some 2011 or newer with a smc and efi update can run the online diagnostics. Usually the update is part of a software update. If you have the original install disks, you don’t need internet diagnostics. This is because after Snow Leopard, all operating systems came by way of a download from apple, if not preinstalled. The reinstall and the utilities is on line. The early 2011 that came with Snow Leopard generally can’t use the online diagnostics. As a general rule. If your computer came with Lion or newer, you use the online diagnostics.

HI, I do have the original install disks for my iMac 27-mid 2010 but even so always get the same error message mentioned on this thread (3403D) when I try to run the ADT.

Jun 5, 2017 12:41 AM

I have it too. Using an old (around 2010) and now problematic iMac.

I think in my case, and maybe yours too, this paragraph pertains:

If you’re using OS X Lion v10.7 or earlier and you can’t get AHT to start, see if you have an OS X installation disc named “Applications Install Disc 2.” Insert the disc in your internal optical drive or external Apple SuperDrive before following the steps above. Or, if you’re using a MacBook Air (Late 2010), plug the MacBook Air Software Reinstall thumb drive into your USB port instead.

The problem with my iMac is that the internal optical drive broke very early after purchasing this iMac. Actually it broke in (or around) an earthquake back in 2011 😛 It just won’t swallow any optical disc since.

Question: Q: What does Apple.com/support -3403d mean when trying to run diagnostics check on my MacBook Pro?

hoping someone can clarify what the error message ‘apple.com/support -3403d’ means when trying to run diagnostics tool on startup?

the error happens when pressing either D or option D on startup and I seem to be unable to enter into the diagnostics checker

Posted on Aug 15, 2019 8:23 AM

A User collected the ones Apple left out in the open and put them on a GitHub web site, along with instructions for making a stand-alone USB-stick (execute-only). Installation back in «the right place» on your boot drive is very complex, and too much trouble.

what model MacBook Pro?

older Macs, before about June 2013 do not use «Apple Diagnostics» so when you try to get the diagnostic via Internet Recovery, it cannot be found and you get an error.

On your older Mac, the Apple Hardware Test will be found on the original-Installer DVD. If you need help finding a copy on the Internet, please post back.

Do you see an image of a globe with a triangle containing an exclamation point?

That means it’s trying to either access MacOS Recovery or Apple Diagnostics through the internet and can’t connect. That would be a sign that the tool you’re trying to access is not present or is damaged on your drive.

Aug 15, 2019 8:43 AM

Hi, thank you for your quick response. my MacBook Pro is a mid 2010 unit so I’m guessing I don’t have the diagnostics tool!

Not it sure if I can remember where the install disc is, is there a copy on the net?

thank you once again!

In Internet Recovery, these low negative thousands error messages indicate that your provided Wi-Fi Network is inadequate in some fashion, and cannot be used (for this purpose) in its current state.

Common problems include:

required use of a proxy server to get Internet access

required use of a login page to get Internet access

Use of a login server or certificate to get Internet access

Use of PPPoE in the Mac to get Internet access (typically only applies to DSL)

Use of Fixed IP address rather than good old DHCP

Variance of the time by more than five minutes

Failure of Router to provide workable DNS server addresses, or providing 0.0.0.0 [may produce -2002f]

If you have an Ethernet port, you may in some cases be able to move your Mac close to the Router and connect to the Router using Ethernet.

The higher the number, the more obscure the problem.

Also, make certain the Date&Time and Time Zone are correct within 5 minutes.
