Apple Crisp Without Oats
October 2, 2015 (last updated October 19, 2021)
This homemade apple crisp made without oats is a timeless old fashioned recipe, just like Grandma made it. This dessert will warm your soul with juicy, tender cinnamon-sugar apples, and a crisp, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth no-oats topping. Make it for an easy, irresistible fall dessert!
Team Apple, here and reporting for duty! While there’s something about pumpkin spice recipes, there’s nothing better than warm, cinnamon-filled, cozy, and comforting apple desserts. There’s no shortage of them here, from salted caramel apple cake to apple cider cupcakes with bourbon frosting, or cinnamon sugar apple fritters.
But there’s something extra special about this apple crisp. It takes the cake…er, crisp. It’s sweet, soul-warming, and completely nostalgic. And it’s so easy to make that when the mid-week craving strikes, you’ll have a bowl of warm apple crisp in no time.
This recipe hits all the nostalgic points for me. Made by my grandma for years, and a recipe my mom routinely made for Sunday night dessert, enjoyed warm out of the oven with big scoops of ice cream (and caramel drizzle on extra-special nights). Now, it’s part of my fall traditions, too.
Why is Grandma’s the Absolute Best?
This recipe goes a long way back in my family, and there are differing stories about how it came to be.
One story says it originated in my Great Grandparent’s restaurant in a little Iowan town. The second story is that my Grandma got it off of a sugar sack (yes, I said sack) many, many years ago. As she put it, “I’m 75 years old, so you know that was a long time ago.”
Either way, I couldn’t be more thankful for family heirlooms like these. It is the perfect apple crisp.
It’s like a big Grandma hug that fills your soul to the very top with comfort. It’s the best old-fashioned apple crisp out there.
Over the years, my mom has evolved this recipe and it’s what I’ve grown to love. Not just me either, it’s a favorite for everyone who’s tried it (not bias at all…).
My mom doubles the amount of buttery topping, because the more crisp butter topping, the better. She tends to have a way of making desserts extra indulgent, like with heaping cups of peanut butter and chocolate in her Molly Beth Cookie Bars.
Back to this Apple Crisp and it being the best… well, you’re going to love the buttery crisp topping. Since there are no oats in the topping, it melts in your mouth with each bite, melding into the sweet, juicy apples. There’s nothing like it, and once you have it, you won’t go back.
I honestly can’t eat apple crisp any other way now. And since this post was originally published in the early years of FITK, I’ve also created a summer favorite: Cherry Crisp, and Blueberry Almond Crisp. No-oats crisps are truly amazing.
Signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours, easy, best-ever apple crisp.
How to Make Homemade No Oats Apple Crisp
Please be sure to see the full recipe card below for the complete instructions and notes.
This recipe is absolutely so easy to make! From start to finish it takes about an hour, but most of that is the time it takes to bake it. Waiting is always the hardest part. Here are the simple recipe steps:
- Slice the apples fairly thin. You don’t want them falling apart during the baking process because they’re too thin, or because of the apple type – see more in the FAQs about what type of apple to use.
2. Mix the apples with sugar and cinnamon. A little water, too, to aid in mixing. One reader recommended using apple cider in place of the water. I think that is an excellent substitution if you have it on hand already! You can mix the apples, cinnamon, and sugar in the baking dish you’ll use to save on dishes, too!
3. Make the crisp topping. Use a separate mixing bowl and a pastry cutter to blend together butter, flour, and granulated sugar until the butter is into a pea-sized mixture.
With the apple mixture in an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish (this is totally flexible!), gently press the topping on the apples and then bake until bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
The first bite of this heavenly dessert will make you fall in love. It transports me right back to being 11 years old again on those Sunday nights, snuggled in and cozy, filled with all the love of the strong women in my family. I’m excited to hear how it becomes part of your fall tradition in your family, too.
So what are you waiting for? Run to the store, apple orchard, or your neighbors to pick some fresh in-season apples and get to choppin’! The best is yet to come!
Common Questions
Any apples that are best for baking will work in this recipe. If you’d use it in a pie, you should use it here. You want it sturdy enough to hold up to the baking. I recommend a sweet yet tart apple for the best flavor, too. I love Jonathan’s or Honeycrisp, but a good ol’ granny smith apple will work as well.
Yes, you can! This recipe is pretty customizable to the size of a baking dish. I tend to use a more oval casserole pan and a more traditional square baker. The baking time for this recipe is written for an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish, however, you can adjust it as needed. For a larger baking dish, the crisp will be thinner and require less cooking time. Adjust accordingly.
For the first day, I cover the apple crisp with foil and store it at room temperature. If it lasts any longer than that, I recommend storing the pan covered in the fridge.
If you are reheating individual portions, I like to heat it in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave until warmed through. If you are reheating an entire pan, make sure the pan is at room temperature (don’t take a cold pan and stick it in a hot oven). Then heat in a 350F oven until warmed through.
Yes! You can prepare the apple crisp without baking, and store it in the fridge until you are ready to do so. Otherwise, you can bake the apple crisp and then reheat it when you’re ready to serve. Alternatively, you can bake it ahead of time the day you’ll be enjoying it, and serve it at room temperature.
I love it warm, fresh out of the oven, served with a scoop of ice cream and caramel drizzle. It’s also great at room temperature. And no one could argue with a little whipped cream on top.

Super Easy Healthy Apple Crisp Recipe (Vegan!)
The best healthy apple crisp recipe you’ll ever make! It’s super easy to make. No added sugar to the apples and topped with a cinnamon rolled oat crumble, this easy vegan apple crisp is ready in under an hour, naturally low in sugar, gluten free, and the perfect healthy fall dessert!
The easiest vegan apple crisp ever
Put this undetectably healthy apple crisp at the top of your list of fall baking, especially after a trip to the apple orchard!
This is is THE apple crisp recipe to make. Like above all healthy apple recipes out there (okay maybe not alllll of them, because I do have a pretty awesome apple pie recipe), this crisp is the best.
Filled with caramelized thinly sliced apples (repeat: thinly sliced!), coated in a sweet cinnamon, and topped with a sweet and crispy healthy oat crumble topping that just makes you swoon.
And yet it’s entirely vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and nut free, making it a perfect recipe for those who need food to be free of the Top 8 Allergens.
I know this for a fact because as I tested this final round, my sister was visiting and before she even asked what it was, she took a bite.
And then another. And another, until she finally asked, “Is this one going on your blog?! Because this is amazing.”
That’s how I knew I wasn’t crazy for thinking this apple crisp is undetectably vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and barely sweetened with a little natural sugar (maple syrup, aka liquid gold).
What’s the difference between a crisp, crumble, and cobbler?
So with many making crisps, cobblers, and crumbles right now, you might be wondering what the heck is the difference between them all.
I know I did, at least! So let’s break it down:
A cobbler is typically more like a biscuit on top of a filling. It’s made with flour, a fat (like coconut oil or vegan butter), a sweetener, and water. You can check it out here on my Paleo Vegan Blueberry Cobbler.
A crumble is very similar to a crisp, but it actually typically doesn’t have any oats in it. The crumble consistency is made from a combination of sugar, flour, and coconut oil, plus a little bit of cinnamon if you’re going for a more streusel topping. If it does have oats, the ratio has more flour than oats. You can check out a crumble topping on my Blueberry Crumble Bars and my Apple Crumble Cake.
A crisp is made from oats, flour, coconut oil, and sugar, but with more oats than flour, if at all. Now the reason why it’s called a crisp is because when baked, the topping gets nice and crunchy, whereas a crumble is much softer.
Of course, the example of this on the blog is this healthy apple crisp!
Now that you have the rundown on crisps, crumbles, and cobblers, (insert The Office’s Jim and Charles meme here), let’s make this healthy apple treat!
Vegan Apple Crisp Ingredients
This healthy apple crisp is very minimal in terms of both ingredients and equipment needed. For the ingredients, you’ll need:
- Apples, sliced very thin and skin removed: use a super sweet apple variety, since this healthy apple crisp has a no sugar added filling. I recommend gala or fuji!
- Cinnamon: I also add in a mix of pumpkin spice, but you can just use cinnamon!
- Rolled oats: gluten free as needed.
- Oat flour: or another flour, such as all-purpose flour, or a gluten-free flour blend- this recipe is super flexible!
- Coconut oil: you can also swap in vegan butter if you’d prefer!
- Maple syrup: I have not tested this recipe with coconut sugar, but you can use a keto-friendly liquid sweetener, such as Wholesome Sweets’ Allulose!
As you can see, this is an entirely gluten free and vegan apple crisp! Absolutely zero butter, dairy, or the like going in this crisp recipe.
In terms of equipment, you will need to skin the apples, or else the skin will prevent the apples from caramelizing together. Since this is a no sugar added crisp filling, we’ll need to give the apples the best chance to caramelize!
Then you’ll just need a cast iron skillet or casserole dish. You can make this in a large casserole dish, but I just think presentation wise, a cast iron is beautiful!
How to make a healthy apple crisp (overview)
For the full written instructions and ingredient measurements, see the bottom of this post in the recipe card. You can also hit the “jump to recipe” button at the top of this post! Here, we’ll go over a brief overview of the steps, along with providing visuals for a better understanding of the recipe.
How to make a no sugar added apple crisp:
Start with greasing the skillet or casserole dish. Either works here!
Toss together the apples.
You’ll add lemon and cinnamon, and toss until evenly coated. Then pour the sliced apples into your pie dish.
Make the oat crumble.
To make the healthy crumble topping that goes onto this shockingly healthy apple crisp recipe, whisk together the oats, flour, spices, and nuts. Add in the melted coconut oil and maple syrup, and combine until it’s a wet and thick batter.
Assemble the apple crisp and bake!
Then top the apples with the cinnamon nut crumble. Place into the oven, covered with some tin foil for the start, to bake.
Once it’s done, remove it from the oven with an oven mitt and let it cool for a few minutes before topping with some vegan vanilla ice cream and diving in!
Do I need to remove the the apple skin for an apple crisp?
Yes, please do remove the apple skin for making an apple crisp. Please don’t skip this step.
If you don’t remove the apple skin, the apples won’t create that gooey caramelized texture that you think of with an apple crisp.
I want you to have the absolute best experience making this vegan apple crisp, so be sure to not skip this step!
Notes about this vegan apple crisp:
I know that a few will always need to swap out ingredients because sometimes we don’t have everything on hand or can’t consume something due to an allergy.
So let’s go over it all right here in my tips and tricks for making this the best apple crisp recipe you’ll ever eat!
- Go for Gala. I really prefer Gala apples because we’re not adding any sugar to the apples. You can use Granny if you’d like, but I don’t think it will be sweet enough. Another great sweet apple to use here is Golden Delicious or Fuji!
- Slice your applesverythin. This will ensure that they cook evenly throughout the skillet and really caramelize all together.
- Add in nuts to the crumble topping for extra fall flavor: warmed pecans or walnuts go wonderfully in this crisp.
- However, you can also make this a nut free healthy apple crisp! Got an allergy to nuts or just don’t like them? Easy! Swap in the walnuts and pecans for pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds if you’d like! Or you can leave the nuts and seeds out all together- your apple crisp will still taste amazing 🙂
- Flour swaps: this gluten free apple crisp recipe doesn’t necessarily need to be gluten free if you don’t need it. If you only have all-purpose flour, then by all means, swap it in at an equal ratio! You can also use homemade oat flour as well. If you don’t have access to cassava flour, this apple crisp works with oat flour, a gluten free flour blend, and almond flour 🙂
How to store apple crisp
If you have any leftovers of your crisp, not a problem.
Use an airtight container to maintain freshness.
This apple crisp will last for about a week in the fridge. To reheat, simply scoop your desired amount onto a piece of aluminum foil, and heat it in the oven for 5 minutes at 350F.
There you have it! An easy, and surprisingly vegan apple crisp (but don’t let that scare you!).
You’ll just absolutely love this super easy vegan apple crisp recipe! It’s so incredibly simple in ingredients and method, and tastes out of this world- no one will know it’s healthy!
