Apple in your hands

Crack an Apple in Half With Your Bare Hands

Introduction: Crack an Apple in Half With Your Bare Hands

Demonstrate your super-human strength by ripping an apple in half with your bare hands. Learn the simple technique here.

If you prefer the video version of the Instructable, you can see the process in this short video.

Step 1: Technique

This trick is all about the technique. As the video explains, humans are not strong enough to simply grab a hold of an apple and rip it apart. The secret is to use your hands in such a way that the harder you grip the more pressure is applied from the stem of the apple outward. Keep this idea in mind as we proceed to the next steps.

Step 2: Wiggle the Fleshy Part of Your Thumbs Into the Stem Area

Remove the stem and then wriggle the base of your thumbs (actually part of your palms) into where the stem was. The rest of your fingers go around the apple and rest on the bottom of the apple.

If you put your hands in this position without the apple and pull your fingers toward your wrists, you will notice that your thumbs roll out. This rolling is the force that will split the apple open.

Step 3: Grip and Roll

With your hands set as described in step 2 squeeze hard and let your thumbs roll outward. You will feel the ripping force increase as your grip tightens. As you grip harder, the apple will break in half.

Step 4: Some Things I Have Learned

There are a few things that I have learned from teaching this to people.

1. Pretty much anyone can do this. I learned it from my mom and even my 12-year-old boy scouts can do it — even the skinny ones.

2. It sometimes helps to use your knee to strengthen your grip. Try pushing on your knee with you fingers as shown in the photo.

3. It sometimes helps to start out with a softer apple or a very crisp ripe one. If the apple is not ripe, it might be more difficult.

4. Size matters. You will eventually be able to crack all sizes, but it may be easier to start with one that fits comforably in your hand — not to big, not too small.

5. If you haven’t already watched the video, then I recomend you do so. Sometimes its just easier to see done.

TIL I’ve been doing it wrong. I’ve been putting my thumbtips in the stem area and my fingertips at the bottom then pulling them apart top down. This looks much easier.

will this work on normal sized apples, or just those tiny things?

When I was kid, there was a guy in my neighborhood with an amazing garden. He grew apples almost as big as a soccer ball. You could make a whole pie from just one. He often made the gift of one apple to the neighbors. Anyway, I’m not sure this works with his apples, but this will work with most apples you would come across.

I guess I should try it, it’s a little late for apples though, first frost has been and gone.

A few extra tips to people trying this:

1. Start with Gala or Honeycrisp apples, they are the easiest to do, so you can learn the technique. Granny smith and other green apples are damn near impossible when you start out.

2. if the two palms together thing does not work for you, try one palm, and one thumb down in the stem, sometimes thats easier.

3. ‘find the sweet spot’ I always start out by putting a thumb in the stem, and sort of rotating the apple and feeling it, after a little practice, you sort of develop a feel for finding the direction to try and split the apple. They are all different, but there is generally a ‘sweet spot’ which the apple breaks along easier than other angles.

4. remember, your basicly pulling it in half, don’t squeeze to much, but rather, think of it like opening a book that is stuck shut, with the spine at the base of the apple and the pages at the top, where your palms are.

You can also turn these settings on and off on your Apple Watch under Handwashing in the Settings app.

Start the timer

The timer starts when the audio and motion sensor data in your Apple Watch Series 4 and later detect that you’re washing your hands. You’ll also feel a haptic alert when the timer begins. If you stop washing your hands before the timer ends, your watch will prompt you to keep going. If you’re not washing your hands, you can tap to dismiss the timer.

How To : Split an Apple in Half with Your Bare Hands

Have you ever looked at a piece of fruit and thought to yourself, «you suck, fruit, sitting there all smug and happy, I wish I could just destroy you here and now?» If so, read on—your favorite Fat-man is going to show you how you can get your revenge on that happy smug fruit sitting in your fridge by breaking an apple in half with your bare hands.

Step 1: Obtain the Tools of Destruction

Go into your attic and find your hands. Attach them firmly, making sure there are no gaps around the wrist area. Then go find an apple. Any kind will do, although I personally find Braeburn to be the perfect mix of smug and annoying.

Step 2: Intimidate Your Foe

Shout at the apple a little. Swear at it. Go on, really vent your frustrations on the fruit. Describe in explicit detail how you’re going to break it in half. If you fulfill this step well enough, oftentimes the apple will spontaneously combust on its own accord. If you’re feeble minded, the fruit will own you and make you its slave, so take control of the situation by telling it what a foolish piece of botany it is.

Step 3: Take the Stem Off of the Apple

Consider this to be the equivalent of castration to an apple.

Step 4: Place Your Right Thumb Where the Stem Was

Consider this to be the equivalent of castration to an apple followed by jamming your thumb into the open wound. Use this opportunity to insult the apple’s mother.

Step 5: Use Your Left Palm to Drive Your Thumb Through the Apple

Use your fingers to help squeeze your thumb into the apple. It should start to groan, then split with a loud crack. Congratulations, you’re better than a piece of fruit. Your mother would be proud.

Warnings

  • If you try this with a Granny Smith, there’s no two ways about it—you’re going to hurt yourself. Braeburn apples, Golden Delicious, and smaller or softer varieties work very well.
  • This can hurt your thumb. If it hurts, stop.

Use Apple Pencil with your iPad

You can use Apple Pencil to write, mark up, and draw.

Before you begin

  • Make sure that your Apple Pencil is compatible with your iPad.
  • If needed, charge your Apple Pencil.
  • Pair your Apple Pencil before you try to use it.

Draw with Apple Pencil

Open an app, like the Notes app. With iPadOS, move the tool palette around the screen or minimize it so you have more space to draw and sketch. The tool palette has different tools, depending on the app you’re using. Use the ruler tool to create straight lines, then rotate them with your fingers. Made a mistake? You can erase by object or even by pixel.

To draw in the Notes app:

  1. Open Notes.
  2. Tap to start a new note.
  3. Start drawing with your Apple Pencil.

You can also start by tapping to open the tool palette. Choose from several drawing tools and colors, and switch to the eraser if you make a mistake. Double-tap the eraser to view erasing options on your iPad. When you draw, you can tilt your Apple Pencil to shade a line and press more firmly to darken the line. You can drag the tool palette to a different edge of the screen. Tap to auto-minimize the tool palette and see more options.

Drawing near the edge of the screen with your Apple Pencil won’t activate Control Center, Notification Center, or Multitasking. You can draw anywhere on the screen without getting interrupted.

Write with Apple Pencil

You can write a note with your Apple Pencil in Notes and other apps. With iOS 14, you can write with your Apple Pencil in any text field.* You can convert your handwriting to text. And you can use a handwritten phone number, date, or address as if you had typed it.

Write in any text field with Scribble

You can use your iPad and Apple Pencil to write by hand in any text field, like the search field in Safari or a text field in Mail.* All handwriting and conversion to text happens on your iPad, keeping your writing private and secure.

You can learn how to delete, select, insert, and join words using Scribble by going to Settings > Apple Pencil and tapping Try Scribble.

Convert your handwritten notes to text

You can convert your handwriting* in two ways:

  • You can write with the pen farthest from the ruler, which has an «A» on it. Your handwriting will convert automatically to text as you write.
  • If you already have some handwritten notes, you can select the notes and convert them to text:
    1. Double-tap or touch and hold a word you want to select. Select more words by sweeping your finger over them. You can triple-tap to select an entire line of words.
    2. Tap the selected words.
    3. In the menu that appears, tap Copy as Text.
    4. Paste the text elsewhere in the same document or in another app.

Use handwritten phone numbers, dates, addresses, and more

  1. Tap a number, date, address, or other recognized data that you’ve written. It will have an underline.*
  2. Choose what you want to do, like call the number or create an event.

Draw perfect shapes

You can perfect a lopsided circle or leaning square. Here’s how:

  1. Draw a shape by hand, like a circle, square, or star, using a single stroke.
  2. When you finish the shape, pause with the tip of your Apple Pencil on the screen. The shape you drew will be replaced by a perfect one.

Double-tap Apple Pencil (2nd generation)

On an Apple Pencil (2nd generation), you can double-tap near the tip of your Apple Pencil to quickly switch back to the tool you used last. To change your settings for double-tap, go to Settings > Apple Pencil, then choose:

  • Switch between current tool and eraser
  • Switch between current tool and last used
  • Show color palette
  • Off

Double-tap works only in supported apps, like Notes.
