Apple is the illumination that

Question: Q: Uneven illumination

My powerbook was delivered on 24th Oct and no white spots (yet). The screen was perfect up until yesterday when I noticed a general unevenness of illumination.

The bottom corners of the screen now appear brighter and a darker patch hangs over the middle of the dock and extends about 1/3 of the way up the screen.

It’s not blindingly obvious but very annoying to me, I’m just concerned it might be described as falling within normal parameters if I send the computer back.

Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

Since first appearing the problem with my LCD has got much worse, initially a minor annoyance the right side is now very much dimmer than the left rendering it almost unusable.

I called Apple support in Italy yesterday and the first person I spoke to started saying I would have to take my Powerbook into an Apple reseller even though I purchased it from the AppleStore, she then put me on hold and the line cut off.

Luckily the second attempt was a bit more successful, both the customer care representative and technician were very helpful and courteous. They arranged for the machine to be picked up next week by DHL and indicated a 3-5 day turnaround for the repair.

I heard about the white spots a day before I purchased my new book and was certain to pick an unaffected model. However, within a matter of weeks, the spots began to appear.

And not 24 hours ago I too noticed a dimness in the lower right hand corner. it seems to rapidly advance so watch out «unaffected» bookers!

My PB goes off tomorrow to Apple so that the uneven illumination problem can be fixed.

I will miss it. Sniffle.

Odd that at max brightness the problem goes away but at lower settings it is so uneven.

I got my 15in Nov 10 in the UK. No sign of white spots, but it does exhibit the darker right hand side. As most of my work happens towards the left side, with palettes and whatnot on the right, I didn’t initially notice it. It also isn’t affected by the screen being full brightness.

In addition, I can’t get rid of a blue cast. I’ve calibrated, ColorSync’ed and even used third party calibration utlities, but it still looks way too blue.

Not sure if I want to complain, as I don’t do colour critical work on the machine. If I started to, I would probably add a second monitor. Besides, I have fallen in love with this laptop in a way I didn’t with the Pismo I still own.

Yep, another one here. It’s been bugging me for a few days because the uneven brightness is quite slight — just enough to make me think there’s something wrong with my right eye. Annoying.

Guess I’ll wait a few days and see how bad it gets.

I’m loathed to send my PB in for repair just yet as I’ve installed the 7200rpm Hitachi drive inside and I’m buggered if I’m going to take it all apart again!

But ****, this uneven brightness is really bugging me now.

Powerbook was picked up on Monday and delivered back to me this morning (Fri), a 3-5 day turnaround as promised. Screen looks great no unevenness in illumination and no white spots.

Only problem is there is now a scratch or crack in the screen about 2cm long just below the menu bar clock that with a light background looks like a hair stuck on the screen. It is definitely a physical defect as you can feel it when you run your fingers over it. Not major but it just shouldn’t be there on a brand new very costly machine, so looks like it’s back to Apple another time (sigh).

Yep, I have exactly the same problem, very frustrating. I know apple are good with repairing under warranty, but last powerbook I bought it took 6 weeks to get back to me, so I’m not to keen to let my new powerbook out of my site. Also my internal mic is not working properly, it’s crackling pretty badly. Anyone else had problems with their internal mic?

My PowerBook returned from Apple Repair with a new display clamshell and thankfully no more white spots. However, I do notice the uneven illumination, particularly on the right side of the screen and in the bottom corners. Other than that and one small cluster of pixels that appears slightly brighter only against a white background, my screen looks great.

I suspect that the uneven illumination issue falls within Apple’s acceptable parameters, so I’m not going to pursue a «fix.» Apple Care has told me that LCD technology isn’t perfect and certain anomallies are to be expected.

My PowerBook has already been in for repair twice. I think I can live with the bit of unevenness. I’ve never worked with an LCD screen prior to this PowerBook, so perhaps I’m overly used to CRTs.

I’ve had my 15″ PB for a little over two weeks now and I’m still happy to say, no white spots at all! I do however note that very subtle difference in brightness across the screen, with the right third of the screen being a little darker. Not much, but it’s there.

I make my living off this thing, but 90% of the time I use a Samsung 19″ monitor as my main workspace with the PB sitting next to it displaying my Mail and any other secondary stuff I might have open. I don’t do color graphic work, so for me this isn’t an issue, I guess.

I usually have the PB screen dimmed down a bit, and I find that when I take it on the road I can brighten it all the way up and the shadowing is minimal. This may be the sort of thing you have to put up with to get that great wide screen in the first place.

On balance, I love this thing. The white spot people have my sympathy, but I do know other people who’ve had these a lot longer than I have with no white spots at all, so it’s not universal. I never asked anyone about the shadowing till I saw the thread here this morning.

***
WARNING: Taking portrait mode photos requires iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus, X or NEWER.
***

Apollo is the first app to use the depth data of your portrait mode photos to calculate photorealistic light and shadow. Using a proprietary processing algorithm running on your iPhone’s graphics card, Apollo is able to render light sources on a portrait scene or selfie in real time.

Apollo allows professional photographers and amateurs alike to try things that are not possible in the physical world. You can shape scene lighting by adding or even removing light. Since lights are computationally rendered in the scene, it is possible to put a light source within the frame: say hello to invisible lamps!

The UI is optimised for use with one thumb, allowing you to always view the entire photo. One price, no in-app purchases and no subscriptions.

We hope that Apollo is part of the computational photography revolution. We are doing our best but your support is crucial. Send us your feedback, ideas or bug reports on our support email.

Ratings and Reviews

Amazing at editing lighting on portrait photos

I think the app description makes it clear, but seems like quite a few reviewers have not understood that this only works on photos taken in portrait mode on iPhones that are capable of doing that.

If you have Portrait mode photo’s though this is really neat and is a interesting insight into where “computational photography” is taking us.

To be able to edit the 3D lighting of an image after it was taken (this is not a filter, or effect, it is using the depth data provided by Portrait mode to alter the image in a 3D way) is something that was not even thought of back in the days of my original 35mm SLR! As you drag a light source around you can literally see it impact of it on the face in the image for example, and you can impact the background of the image, removing it, adding fog etc.

The help mode is nice too and get’s you started. There seems to be a lot in here, and I have only just started playing with it.

Developer Response ,

Thank you very much. We are more than happy you enjoy using Apollo.

Amazing BUT.

Please check the spec of phone you need BEFORE you purchase. Personally don’t think some people will realise a couple of things:

1. 7+, 8+ as stated in description (Currently) is referring specifically to 7 Plus, 8 Plus.
It won’t work on a none Plus model.
2. Portrait ORIENTATION is NOT the same as Portrait MODE — it’s would be easy to assume all photos take in the former ‘should’ be turning up in the App when they won’t.
Only if you know how to get the camera into (and take pics in) Portrait MODE will u see your photos in the app.

My suggestions would be to change the wording slightly so phone compatibility is clear and put a photo in of how to get camera into Portrait MODE. I suspect this would reduce negative reviews and people yelling at support.

So many apps for photography do the same old thing. This one however mixes things up in a whole new unique way and really makes you think about the photos you’ve taken and what you can do to them (and why). And inspire you to go out and take photos specifically to add these effects too.
Giving five stars as just so kool (equivalent effects in full blown photoshop type programs are available, but need quite a lot of know how, time and effort, to get what you’ve got here).
It’s not perfect, application of effects isn’t via a particularly intuitive system, which may frustrate some, but overall best photo app have come across in a long long time.
Thoroughly recommended.

Developer Response ,

We are going to edit the wording regarding compatibility, the reason we state e.g. 7+ instead of 7 Plus, is that we do not have room for writing the whole word in the specific description field.
We are working on the user experience and how to make easier for someone to perform actions.
Thank you very much for the thorough review and great feedback!

Excellent application

Exceptional application. It works like a charm. After using the application for a few minutes I made a hasty judgment and gave a 3 stars rating as it could not process some of my photos taken in portrait mode. I then found out that not all pictures taken in portrait mode have depth of field data. Pictures without the Portrait icon on the top left corner of picture cannot be processed. I also found out that one could have upto 20 light sources which was not so evident at the beginning. With this app you don’t need a studio — just amazing!

Apple is “The Shark”

Apple is a multinational technology company, which has captured a “Trillion Dollar” market with its amazing products.

When it comes to Apple, they are building an eco-system, thus 3rd party products will not be encouraged in the future. They are trying to create a chain in their industry that will make users pretty much dependent on Apple products. They will allow you to use 3rd party products but Apple will have a better offer to give. The AirTags is one such example, you can use Tile or any other Tags, but Apple has a much better offer here for Apple users.

One of the best products that Apple’s been manufacturing since 2006 is their MacBooks. About MacBook, Apple made a huge announcement last year that they are going to use their own chips from now on. Because of this update, “Intel” faced a loss, but the company doesn’t depend on Apple, so the loss was bearable.

This is not the case for every other Company, there are tons of products created for Apple users. For example, Dongles is one of the products which depends on Apple Users as their MacBooks don’t offer ports.

Sources like 9to5Mac claim that there will be a future update for MacBook which will include HDMI, SD card slot, and MagSafe for magnetic charging. Because of this, there will be a huge impact on Dongles Market, FYI it is a billion-dollar business.

This shows that a company depending on Apple users is a risky business. Apple has the best strategic plans, and that is the reason for its success. Apple is “The Shark” in the ocean.
