1 Infinite Loop

An image of the Apple Campus from Google Maps.

1 Infinite Loop, also known as Apple Campus, was Apple Inc.’s former headquarters in Cupertino, California, USA.

Contents

History

The campus was originally constructed for Apple Computer as a research and development facility by the Sobrato Organization and completed in 1993. After Apple co-founder Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1997, he relocated the headquarters from 20525 Mariani Avenue to 1 Infinite Loop. Though Apple still occupies the campus, the headquarters is now located at Apple Park, which opened in April 2017. [1] [2]

Incidents

  • On March 6, 1998, disgruntled fans and developers gathered at the campus to protest the discontinuation of the Newton platform. [3]
  • On August 12, 2008, a three-alarm fire broke out on the second floor of Valley Green 6 at around 10:00pm and was extinguished by 12:30am. [4] Although no one was injured, the Santa Clara County Fire Department estimated the damage at around $2 million. Apple stated that the building was not a research and development facility. [5]
  • On October 19, 2011, Apple held a staff memorial on the campus to celebrate the life of late co-founder Steve Jobs. Apple retail stores around the world were closed so that employees could watch the event as it was livestreamed to the stores. [6]
  • On April 27, 2016, 25-year-old employee Edward Mackowiak was found dead in a conference room around 8:30am from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office determined that «no foul play and no other individuals were involved». [7][8]

Facilities

Though the Apple campus contains additional buildings on the other side of De Anza Boulevard, «1 Infinite Loop» generally refers to the six main buildings situated within the oval private street of Infinite Loop. Employees identify these buildings as IL1 through IL6. The inside of 1 Infinite Loop is restricted to employees and persons outside of Apple must be accompanied by employees. A large car park is located outside of 1 Infinite Loop. [2]

4 Infinite Loop (IL4) houses the Town Hall conference center, which hosted early Apple Special Events. [9]

Infinite Loop also housed The Company Store, the corporate store where customers could purchase Apple-branded merchandise; employees got a discount. In 2015, it was renovated and reopened as «Apple Infinite Loop» to present the full Apple retail store experience and now also sells the Mac and iOS lines. This store remains the only place within the campus that is open to the public. [10]
