Question: Q: Refurbished vs Replacement Unit

Just had my iPhone replaced, went home and did a search on refurbished and replacement units. Found this on wiki and I’m wondering, whats the difference between a refurbished unit and a replacement unit?

Apple sells refurbished units online in their refurbished store. They have information there on what their OEM refurbishment process entails. Refurbished devices bought from Apple have a standard one year warranty and are eligible for extended warranty.

A replacement unit is just that — a service unit used to replace a device. Every company sets aside some proportion of production as service units right from the factory, to provide stock for warranty replacements. Service units may be factory new, or they may have failed some factory inspection that required repair and so were pulled from the standard shipping line and end up (once fixed) in the service unit allotment.

I believe, (I’m not 100% sure) that a replacement unit is new and was sent to replace a faulty unit. A refurbished unit is lightly used, fixed and verified to be in complete working order and is resold at a discount.

Screen Replacement Program for Aluminum Models of Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3

Apple has determined that, under very rare circumstances, a crack may form along the rounded edge of the screen in aluminum models of an Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3. The crack may begin on one side and then may continue around the screen as shown in the images below.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will replace the screen on eligible Apple Watch units that exhibit this type of crack, free of charge.

Service Process

Choose one of the options below to have your Apple Watch serviced. In all cases, your device will be sent to an Apple Repair Center. Your Apple Watch will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program.

Your Apple Watch will be returned to you in approximately 5 business days.

  • Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
  • Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store.
  • Contact Apple Support to arrange mail-in service via the Apple Repair Center.

To prepare your Apple Watch for service, please review Before you send us your Apple Watch.

Note: If your Apple Watch has any damage which impairs the service, that issue will need to be repaired first. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.

Additional Information

Apple may restrict or limit repair to the original country or region of purchase.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of your Apple Watch.

The program covers eligible aluminum models of Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3 for three years after the first retail sale of the unit or one year from the start date of this program, whichever is longer.

What are the service options for my iPad?

Choose the service and repair option that’s best for you.

Mail-in service: Request a box and send your iPad to an Apple Repair Center.

Carry-in service: Set up an appointment at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

How long will it take?

Depending on the type of service, your repair might take up to 5 business days. If your iPad was engraved by Apple, it could take up to 10 business days.

After we receive your iPad, you can check the status of your repair.

How much does it cost?

If your iPad issue is covered under our warranty you won’t pay a fee. If your iPad issue isn’t covered, you’ll pay a fee, which will be either an out-of-warranty fee or an AppleCare+ service fee. See the applicable fees on this page.

Is your iPad covered by AppleCare+?

AppleCare+ gives you expert technical support and hardware coverage from Apple, including accidental damage protection. Each incident of accidental damage is subject to a service fee.

If you don’t have AppleCare+, you’ll pay the out-of-warranty fee for that type of repair.

About iPad service pricing

Repairs are considered out of warranty (and not covered) when:

  • Your iPad is no longer covered by the Apple warranty.

iPad battery and power — United States

If your battery has an issue that’s covered by the Apple Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or consumer law, we’ll service your iPad or Apple Pencil at no additional cost. We’ll test your iPad to see if it has a battery issue or a different power issue. If your iPad has a different battery power issue, we’ll give you the repair price after we determine the cause.

Our warranty doesn’t cover batteries that wear down from normal use. If your battery wears down, we offer out-of-warranty battery service for a fee. If you have AppleCare+, it covers your iPad or Apple Pencil for no additional charge if your product’s battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity.

Your iPad battery’s performance depends on how you use apps and settings. These tips show you how to maximize the life of your iPad battery.

If your iPad won’t turn on or if the screen turns black, follow these steps and see if the issue gets resolved. Your iPad might not require service.

Screen repair

If your iPad screen breaks accidentally, you have the option to replace your iPad for an out-of-warranty fee. Accidental damage isn’t covered by the Apple warranty. If your screen cracks due to a manufacturing issue, it’s covered by the Apple warranty.

The cost to service an iPad with an accidentally damaged screen depends on your iPad model, any additional damage, and if you have AppleCare+ coverage.

If you have AppleCare+, it includes accidental damage protection. Each incident has a service fee. You can use an incident for screen damage. If you don’t have AppleCare+, the out-of-warranty fee applies.

Apple accessories

The Apple-branded accessories that come in the box with your product, including the cable and power adapter, are covered by the Apple Limited Warranty for accessories, your AppleCare+ plan, and consumer law.

The following Apple accessories for iPad are also covered under AppleCare+ for iPad, including accidental damage. You can use an incident of accidental damage included in AppleCare+ for iPad to cover the damage to these accessories. Or you can pay the out-of-warranty service fee.

What to expect

Before you send your iPad to us, be sure to back up your data and prepare your iPad for replacement. Your replacement device won’t have your data on it, and you’ll need to restore that data from your backup.

After we receive your iPad, we’ll send you information about repair, replacement, and fees. If your iPad needs to be replaced, we’ll ship a replacement to you with factory settings. Your replacement iPad will be new or equivalent to new.

Express Replacement Service

Express Replacement Service is a benefit of your AppleCare plan.

Apple Limited Warranty coverage

The Apple Limited Warranty covers your iPad and Apple-branded accessories against manufacturing issues for one year from the date you bought your product. The Apple Limited Warranty is in addition to rights provided by consumer law.

Our warranty doesn’t cover damage caused by accidents or unauthorized modifications. See the warranty for complete details. You can check your coverage status online and update your proof-of-purchase information if there’s an error in our records. If our warranty doesn’t cover your repair, you’ll pay out-of-warranty fees.

Our guarantee after service

We guarantee our service, including replacement parts, for 90 days or the remaining term of your Apple warranty or AppleCare plan coverage, whichever is longer.
