How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iCloud
If you back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll have a copy of your information to use in case your device is ever replaced, lost, or damaged.
- Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
- Go to Settings > [your name], and tap iCloud.

Backup methods for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
A backup allows you to copy and save the information from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you replace your device, you can use a backup to transfer your information to a new device.
Decide which method is best for you
In case you ever need an alternative backup, you can back up your device using iCloud and also using your computer. Learn how to back up your device or restore your device from a backup.
iCloud

iCloud backups
With a Wi-Fi network connection, you can back up your device using iCloud. You don’t need to plug your device into a computer to back up with iCloud.
iCloud backups include nearly all data and settings stored on your device. iCloud backups don’t include:
- Data that’s already stored in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Notes, iCloud Photos, iMessages, Voice Memos, text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages, and Health data
- Data stored in other cloud services, like Gmail and Exchange mail
- Apple Mail data
- Apple Pay information and settings
- Face ID or Touch ID settings
- iCloud Music Library and App Store content (If it’s still available in the iTunes, App, or Apple Books store, you can tap to re-download your already purchased content.)
When you use Messages in iCloud, Health data on iOS 12, or Voice Memos, your content is automatically stored in iCloud. If you turn on iCloud Photos, your content is also automatically stored in iCloud.
Backups from your computer
A computer backup of your device, which is not the same as a sync, includes almost all of your device’s data and settings. A backup from a computer doesn’t include:
- Content from the iTunes and App Stores, or PDFs downloaded directly to Apple Books
- Content synced from Finder or iTunes, like imported MP3s or CDs, videos, books, and photos
- Data already stored in iCloud, like iCloud Photos, iMessages, and text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages
- Face ID or Touch ID settings
- Apple Pay information and settings
- Apple Mail data
- Activity, Health, and Keychain data (to back up this content, you’ll need to use Encrypted Backup in iTunes.)
Can I use my device’s backup for another kind of device, like an iPhone backup for an iPad?
You can restore a device from a backup of another kind of device, like using an iPad backup for an iPhone, but certain types of content won’t transfer. This content includes photos, Messages and attachments in Messages, Voice Memos, and apps that aren’t compatible with the device that you’re setting up. For example, apps compatible only with iPad won’t transfer to your iPhone.
If your devices use iCloud and Messages in iCloud, your iMessages and text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages are automatically stored in iCloud.

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Use these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
Before you sell, give away, or trade in your device, you should first transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
You shouldn’t manually delete your contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photos, or any other iCloud information while you’re signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID. This would delete your content from the iCloud servers and any of your devices signed in to iCloud.
If you still have your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.
Transfer information to your new device
If you have a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use Quick Start to automatically transfer information from your old device to your new device if you’re using iOS 11 or later. Use iCloud, iTunes, or the Finder to transfer information to your new device if you’re using iOS 10 or earlier.
If your phone number will change with your new device, add additional trusted phone numbers to your account to ensure you don’t lose access. If you no longer have access to your old phone number, you can generate a two-factor authentication code on your old device if needed.
Remove your personal information from your old device
- If you paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch.
- Back up your device.
- Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes & App Store.
- If you’re using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings > [your name]. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.
- If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Delete from My [device] and enter your Apple ID password. Then go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out.
- If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
- Go back to Settings and tap General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. If you turned on Find My [device], you might need to enter your Apple ID and password. If your device uses eSIM, choose the option to erase your device and the eSIM profile when asked.
- If asked for your device passcode or Restrictions passcode, enter it. Then tap Erase [device].
- Contact your carrier for help transferring service to a new owner. If you aren’t using a SIM card with your device, you can contact them to get help transferring service to the new owner.
- Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.
When you erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, Find My [device] and Activation Lock are turned off.
If you no longer have your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the steps above weren’t completed and you no longer have your device, use these steps:
- Ask the new owner to erase all content and settings using the above steps.
- If you’re using iCloud and Find My [device] on the device, sign in to iCloud.com/find or the Find My app on another device, select the device, and click Erase. After the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
- If you can’t follow either of the above steps, change your Apple ID password. This won’t remove personal information that’s stored on your old device, but it prevents the new owner from deleting your information from iCloud.
- If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
- If you’re using Apple Pay, you can remove your credit or debit cards at iCloud.com. Choose Account Settings to see which devices are using Apple Pay, then click the device. Next to Apple Pay, click Remove.
- Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.
If you’re trading in an Android device to Apple
Before you send in an Android device to Apple as a trade-in, be sure to do the following:
- Back up your data.
- Erase the device.
- Remove any SIM cards, memory cards, cases, and screen protectors.

When you tap Erase All Content and Settings, it completely erases your device, including any credit or debit cards you added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services. Your content won’t be deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.

How long will my iPhone repair take?
The Apple Store and many of our Apple Authorized Service Providers offer same-day service for some repairs, such as screen repair. If your technician needs to send your iPhone to an Apple Repair Center, you’ll be notified when it’s ready for pickup.
How much do iPhone repairs cost?
After examining your iPhone, your technician will confirm the total costs for repair or replacement. In some cases, a repair might be covered by the Apple warranty, an AppleCare plan, or consumer law.
What if I have AppleCare+ for iPhone?
AppleCare+ gives you expert technical support and hardware coverage from Apple, including accidental damage protection. Each incident of accidental damage is subject to a service fee.
If you don’t have AppleCare+, you’ll pay the out-of-warranty fee for that type of repair.

All of these locations use genuine Apple parts to ensure that your screen works like new after it’s repaired. Some locations offer same-day service.
Battery replacement
If your battery has an issue that’s covered by the Apple Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or consumer law, we’ll service your iPhone at no additional cost.
Our warranty doesn’t cover batteries that wear down from normal use. If your battery wears down, we offer out-of-warranty battery service for a fee. If you have AppleCare+, it covers your iPhone for no additional charge if your product’s battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity. We might need to test your product to find the cause of your battery issue.
