Apple Pie Banana Ice Cream
Lately with the holidays around the corner, I’ve been craving me some Apple Pie! So many things make this time of year so special, one being all the amazing food. Since I’m a bit of a foodie, when I get a craving for something I try to make my own version of it that will taste good but still fit into my dietary needs. I’m not very confident right now in my baking skills to attempted my own version of a healthy vegan apple pie, one without the sugar and of course gluten. So I went to the next best thing that I could thing of. An apple pie banana ice cream!
We traditional have the family over after Thanksgiving to decorate our Christmas tree. It’s usually pot luck style and since I was craving apple pie, I thought this would be a great dessert to make and share with the family. And boy was I right!
Since apple pie is rated America’s favorite pie, this variation is one that everyone can enjoy. Definitely the highlight of our night, next to decorating the tree of course. It also left my house smelling like apple pie, which is perfect since we just finished our Christmas decorations.
“My home is filled with all things merry and bright. And the scent of apple pie, oh how this just feels so right…”
This recipe is super easy, peeling the apples are a bit of a drag, but if you have an apple peeler than it’s sooth sailing for you. I like to use a variety of apples in this recipe but if you have a preference then use what you like. You could also add a little rum to the mix, if your wanting a little extra kick. I didn’t include that in my recipe since we are not big drinkers and don’t keep hard liquor in the house. Feel free to add it if you find it suitable.

Apple Pie (Banana) Ice Cream
Apple Pie is definitely one of my top two pies (the other is pumpkin pie). So it’s not surprising that I’ve already made two Apple Pie Oatmeal recipes, one Baked Apple Pie Oatmeal, and I have plans to make apple pie pancakes, waffles, chia puddings – everything! One of these days I might actually make an actual apple pie. But until then I’ll be turning everything else into apple pie – or turning apple pie into everything.
I’m sure you’ve all heard of the saying, “As American as apple pie”. Based on that saying, it would be rational to believe that apple pie originates from America. But lo and behold, the humble apple pie was actually invented in England. And while I’m on the topic of things that don’t come from where you think they came from, here’s a few more:
- German Chocolate Cake isn’t German. It was named after Sam German, a guy from Dallas who created a chocolate bar.
- Baked Alaska was invented in New York City.
- It’s quite unclear where Macaroni and Cheese was created. Some say Italy, some say France – there’s only one thing that’s clear: it wasn’t invented in America.
Regardless of where it originated from, there’s something so warming and comforting about apple pie – even when it’s in ice cream form.
I know you’re not supposed to eat your feelings, but hey, we all need some comfort now and again. And unlike most comfort foods which are loaded with fat and sugar, both the ice cream and those cookie-looking things you can see in some of the pictures have no butter, no oil and no sugar. Both recipes are also gluten-free and vegan. So if you need a comfort food fix, this isn’t a bad choice.
So what is in the ice cream? Fruit and spices – thanks to my wonderful Yonanas machine! This is so much easier than regular ice-cream; all you need to do is chop up 2 bananas and 1 apple, freeze them, sprinkle them with some pie spices, and shove them through the machine. I don’t know if you’ve ever made regular ice-cream, but it’s a lot more difficult. For one thing, you have to make a custard on the stove, and then churn it for ages in some giant ice-cream maker. Too much effort, I say. Also, fruit-based ice-cream is naturally low-fat and still so unbelievably creamy. However, I definitely recommend using a Granny Smith apple (or another strong-flavored apple), otherwise the ice-cream may taste like bananas rather than apple pie.
I also would like to highly recommend that you use a Yonanas machine for this recipe. So if you don’t have one, seriously, go get one. It’s amazing. Technically, it is possible to make frozen banana ice-cream in a food processor or good-quality blender. All you do with process the chopped and frozen bananas until they form a soft-serve ice cream consistency (although the Yonanas consistency is much better). Is it possible to process frozen bananas and a frozen apple in a food processor? I don’t know. I didn’t try it, out of fear of breaking the very expensive machine. So I suppose my point is: 1) go buy a Yonanas machine; 2) if you try this recipe in a food processor or blender, I’m totally not responsible if your machine explodes.
Moving on, this post is a 2-for-1 bargain, because I’ve got two recipes for you today! And the second one only requires an oven, no other fancy machinery.
I wasn’t quite sure what to call these. They’re very similar to cookies, but are slightly plumper and softer. So to avoid making any unfair representations, I went with “Chewy Apple Oatmeal Bites” (hmm, can you tell I’ve spent all this week working on a business law assignment?).
Just like the ice cream, these bites are butter-free, oil-free, sugar-free and gluten-free (if you use certified gluten-free/wheat-free oats). Through the magic of grated apple and some dates, they’re sweet enough without resorting to sugar or any kind of syrup. And to add some extra protein and omega3, they have walnuts and chia seeds.
I’m eating one of these “cookies” right now, and they’re still soft and moist – and it’s been three days since I made them. What’s the secret? For one thing, dates add plenty of moistness. But then there’s another secret ingredient: pumpkin puree. This idea actually came from a mug brownie recipe on Oh My Veggies, which replaced oil with pumpkin. And it totally works – the cookies are nice and moist without tasting like pumpkin!
In case you can’t tell, I am currently obsessed with my Yonanas machine. There are so many flavors I’d like to try – Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Pumpkin Pie… Oh, and I’m open to suggestions!

Apple Pie Ice Cream
Ice cream is not only for summer, it can be perfect for fall too! This Apple Pie Ice Cream has everything you want for the season. Tender apples, warm spices, buttery pie crust & creamy ice cream.
Ice cream is my favorite dessert. My go-to is always chocolate, but there is exception. When we go to Handel’s Ice Cream, banana cream pie is the only flavor that I get. Not only it was creamy and tasted like real banana, the flaky pie crust was truly amazing. This apple pie ice cream was inspired by that.
Although there are a few components for this ice cream, it’s worth the effort. First, there is ice cream. It’s a basic vanilla ice cream base. Easy to make, but just need time to cool down in the fridge. Second is the apples. To give more flavors, I used 3 different type of apples, so we got little sweetness and tartness at the same time. You can just use 2 types. Cut them into little cubes and sauté with butter, sugar, cinnamon and all spice. Sweet & warm. When I was testing the recipe, I actually tried to make half of the apples into puree. However, the ice cream lost its creaminess and became a bit icy due to the puree. So I abandoned that idea and just use cubes. I am happy with the result.
Last is the pie crust bites. It’s basically a pie crust recipe. Instead of making a pie, roll the dough into long and thin stripes and cut into little bite size. They should just be slightly bigger than Captain Crunch cereal. Roll them in sugar and bake until golden brown. They are buttery and addictive. I can stand there and eat all the bites as snack. Absolutely shouldn’t do that, but they’re so good!
When you have everything ready, churn the ice cream in a machine until thick and creamy. Add about 2/3 of the apple cubes and churn again until well blended. Add more apples if desired. Then add 2/3 of the pie crust bites and mix well with a wooden spoon. That’s it! Now, be patient. Freeze for at least 4 more hours, but best overnight.
This ice cream is to die for! Creamy with lots of tender apples and spices. The crust was flaky, buttery and a hint of salt. Great texture and flavors. Can’t be more perfect for fall!
