The plan of the lesson
Hi, my friends. Today we go on speaking about food. I suspect that “Food” is one of the favourite topics of all the students.
When we speak about any cuisine we can’t help speaking about its special dishes that are the country’s visiting card. As you know our national cuisine is associated with potatoes. Therefore listen to the piece of Belarusian national dance “Bulba”and look at the screen where you can see a great deal of dishes made of potatoes. What do you associate with the word ”potatoes”?
Can you make any dish of potatoes? What in particular.
I’m very proud of you because you know a lot about our Belarusian cuisine.
I offer you to train your vocal cords before we start talking about the topic of our today’s lesson. Say the tongue twister as quickly as possible, please.
How many cookies could a good cook cook? One, two, three, four? Much more!
The aims of the lesson
I think that each of you is a cook. I’m not an exception. You see a pot in my palms. I put there something delicious that I baked yesterday. In this pot there is a topic of our lesson. Try to guess what is there but first ask me some questions about this dish.
Right you are. The topic of the lesson is “Apple pie”. Try to predict what we will do in the lesson.
Sure, we’ll do. We’ll practice your oral speech; we’ll do some tasks based on the certain text after listening to it. I offer you to start immediately. And mind that at the end of the lesson we will try to organize the interview.
The main stage of the lesson
Let’s get acquainted with the plan of the lesson.
Measures of products
The ABC of cooking actions
How the pie is made
The jumbled recipe
The culinary interview
1.Do you know any food measures? Sure, you know. Now I offer you to work in pairs. The task is to match the ingredients and their measures. We need this information when we cook any dish and you can use it while doing your home task for the next lesson.
The cards with foods and their measures
2.Before speaking about any recipe we should get acquainted with a list of verbs that we’ll need to describe any dish. Look at the screen and read the words. Let’s make sentences using these verbs.
3.The next point of our plan is listening to the recipe of the pie. After listening you should put the verbs in the correct order (ex.4c p.74 SB).
Listen to the text once again and answer some questions in pairs. Find the one which has no answer in the text.
What should we do first? (Peel and slice apples)
Is it necessary to arrange the slices beautifully?(No, it isn’t)
What flavoring should we add? (vanilla powder)
Should we make the dough liquid or thick?(No answer in the text)
To what temperature should we preheat the oven? (to 180 0 )
What can help to make the pie softer? (Well-mixed sugar with eggs)
How long should we bake the pie? (50 min – 1 hour)
How is it served? (With ice-cream, tea or coffee)
It’s time for break now. Come here, my friends. Now we’ll try to cook this apple pie. But we’ll do it in a very unusual way. For cooking our pie you just need your classmate’s back and your imagination. Let’s go! (the text for the break is the same text we have just listened in the previous task).
First of all, peel and slice the apples. Then preheat the oven to 180 0 centigrade. Butter the pan. Put the apples into the pan. You do not have to arrange them beautifully. Meanwhile, in a bowl beat the eggs and sugar well. The more you beat the more the cake will rise and softer it will be. Add a pinch vanilla powder and flour. Mix well until the butter is made. Then pour the butter all over the apples to cover them well. Do not mix. Put it in a preheated oven and bake in the middle of the oven for 50 min to 1 hour or until the top is golden. Let it cool slightly. Serve warm with ice-cream or at room temperature with the cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy your pie.
4.This time you have to restore the recipe of the pie you heard before. Now you will work in a group.
But __ and ___ have got the special task. I asked them to prepare some questions for the interview. They need some time to get ready for our interview. Mind that our interview will be culinary.
Then preheat the oven to 180 0 centigrade. Serve warm with ice-cream or at room temperature with the cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy your pie. First of all, peel and slice the apples. Butter the pan. Put the apples into the pan. The more you beat the more the cake will rise and softer it will be. You do not have to arrange them beautifully. Add a pinch vanilla powder and flour. Meanwhile, in a bowl beat the eggs and sugar well. Mix well until the butter is made. Put it in a preheated oven and bake in the middle of the oven for 50 min to 1 hour or until the top is golden. Then pour the butter all over the apples to cover them well. Do not mix. Let it cool slightly.
5.And the last point of our plan is the culinary interview. Imagine, that you are invited to the studio where the cooking show is being shot. Our students __ and __ have already prepared the questions. Let’s start.
Write the story about the favourite pie of your family. And the additional task is to make a short film or a multimedia presentation about how you cook your favourite pie.

I bought ten only yesterday. How many do we have to use? Cathy: I think six large apples will be fine. Now, is there any flour? We have to use two and a half cups of flour. How much do we have? Mike: I think we’ll have to buy some flour. We don’t have much. Maybe only 200 grams. I’ll start a shopping list. ok, flour. What about cinnamon and nutmeg? Cathy: Well, for this recipe, we only need a little cinnamon and nutmeg. How much do we have? Mike: Oh, these containers are both full, so we don’t need any more. Now, we need a little salt. Cathy: OK, we have a lot of salt. Mike: And quite a lot of sugar, hmmm. it says in the recipe about a cup. Cathy: Oh. we don’t have any sugar! We can’t make apple pie without sugar. Write sugar on the shopping list. Mike: OK, I’ve got it. We need a little butter too. Did you buy any butter yesterday at the store? Cathy: No, I didn’t get any. How much do we need for the recipe? Mike: Well, it says 100 grams. I think we have some butter in the fridge. Cathy: Yes, we don’t have much but there’s enough. Mike: OK, I will go down to the store and buy these things we need. And we can start when I return. Источник Учебник Spotlight 4. Student’s Book. Часть 1. Страница 48

It is very easy to make. It’s made of two parts: a crust and a filling. An apple pie can be single-crusted (with only one piece of crust on top or bottom), or double-crusted (with crust on top and on bottom). The top of an apple pie can be solid, or the stripes 2 of crust can form a lattice 3 top. If you have a pie with a lattice top, you can see the filling even before you cut the pie! The filling is made with apples. Some people prefer finely 4 chopped apples, some add large slices 5 instead. With large slices you will get a hearty 6 pie, while the fine chop will make your pie very delicate. An apple pie is a signature dish 7 of many nations. The first written recipe is found in the 14th century book The Forme of Cury ( The Method of Cooking in Middle English). That recipe also called for some pears, raisins and saffron. An apple pie is also a signature American dish. Some people even call it an unofficial symbol of the United States. The most basic (but still tasty!) apple pie needs 2 or 3 cups of flour, 2 eggs (1 beaten 8 egg), a stick of butter, some salt and a cup of water for a crust. For a filling you can take 1 kg of apples, a cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons 9 of flour. Make a simple pastry dough 10 and let it rest in your fridge. Combine everything you need for a filling and refrigerate it as well. Place your dough into a pie dish, add filling and the top layer of crust. Make sure to pinch 11 your crust so it’s sealed all around the pie. Brush 12 your pie with the beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven at 200 °C for about an hour until the crust is golden brown. The pie can be served with an ice cream or a cheese topping. Bon appétit!
