Podcast RSS feed requirements
Apple requires podcasts meet technical requirements and content guidelines to provide a great experience for listeners and make it easier for them to find their new favorite podcasts.
To submit a podcast you must have an Apple Podcasts Connect account. If your podcast comes from an RSS feed, it must meet our technical requirements and include:
Podcast RSS feed technical requirements
Your hosting provider should be able to help you address technical requirements. If the feed does not comply with these requirements, it will result in feed validation errors. RSS feeds can be self-generated and hosted, or can be issued via a hosting provider.
- RSS feed URLs must adhere to RSS 2.0 specifications, be publicly addressable (not password-protected), and include the following XML declaration:
- Display your show artwork and allow streaming playback of your episodes by enabling your hosting server for HTTP HEAD requests and byte-range requests.
- Each episode must have a unique tag, along with its three required components — URL, length, and type — which specify the location and host of the episode. Apple Podcasts will ignore duplicate URLs.
- All episodes must contain a globally unique identifier (GUID), which never changes.
- Use only ASCII filenames and URLs that include a-z, A-Z, or 0-9. For more information, see encoding best practices.
- Respect case-sensitivity across all XML tags in podcast RSS feeds.
Incorrect casing:
Correct casing:
- Date and time must conform to RFC 2822 specifications. The date must be “day of week, day month year” and the time must be in 24-hour format (without including a.m. or p.m.) with the time zone offset included. For example:
Incorrect date format:
7/6/2014 1:00:00 PM
Correct date format:
Wed, 6 Jul 2014 13:00:00 PDT
Wed, 6 Jul 2014 13:00:00 -0700
- Use ‘ (for single quote) or » (for double quote). Avoid using HTML naming conventions such as ’‘ “ or ”. For more information, see XML Character and Entity References.
Incorrect character format:
Love to get outdoors and discover nature’s treasures? Hiking Treks is the show for you.
“Wilderness Area Garden of the Gods“ in Illinois is a delightful spot for an extended hike.
Correct character format:
Love to get outdoors and discover nature’s treasures? Hiking Treks is the show for you.
«Wilderness Area Garden of the God » in Illinois is a delightful spot for an extended hike.

Submit a show
You can submit a show to Apple via an RSS feed that’s hosted by a third-party hosting provider, or you can participate in the Apple Podcasters Program and create a show in Apple Podcasts Connect.
All shows must pass technical validations and a review process before they’re made available on Apple Podcasts.
Submit an RSS feed
If you use a third-party hosting provider to host your RSS feed, follow these steps:
- In Apple Podcasts Connect, click the Add (+) button and select New Show.
- Choose “Add a show with an RSS feed.”
- Enter the RSS feed URL.
- Choose whether you’d like to restrict user access to the show within your Apple Podcasts Connect account. If you choose to restrict access, and have already set up users in the Account menu, only the users you choose will see the show in Apple Podcasts Connect.
- Click Save.
- Review your show details on the Show Information page to ensure everything looks correct.
- Provide contact information for the show, so we can reach someone if there’s an issue.
- On the left, choose Availability.
- Countries or Regions: Choose where you want your show to be available. You can edit availability at any time.
- Distribution: Choose whether you’d like to make your feed publicly available. Selecting this option makes your RSS feed available in the Apple Podcasts Catalog API which allows podcast app developers to include your show in their app.
- Show Release: Choose whether you want your show to be released right away or select a date and time to release it on Apple Podcasts.
- Click Save. В
- Review your show details on the Show Information page to ensure everything looks correct.
- Submit your show for review.
Your RSS feed will be validated before it’s sent to Apple. If there’s an issue, a warning message will appear and must be resolved before you can submit the show. Learn more about validation warnings.
If you’re a member of the Apple Podcasters Program, you can add subscriber audio to your RSS feed-based show in Apple Podcasts Connect. Then, you can link the audio files together.
Create a show in Apple Podcasts Connect
While Apple recommends using a third-party hosting provider, if you’re participating in the Apple Podcasters Program you can create a show with subscriber-only benefits available only to listeners on Apple Podcasts.
- In Apple Podcasts Connect, click the Add (+) button and select New Show.
- Choose “Add a show without an RSS feed.”
- Enter the name of the show.
- Choose whether you’d like to restrict access to the show within your Apple Podcasts Connect account. If you choose to restrict access, only the users you choose will see the show in Apple Podcasts Connect.
- Click Save.
- On the Show Information page, add your show artwork and enter all relevant details.
- Name: The name of your show. You can enter up to 150 characters.
- Artist: The artist most often refers to the parent company or network of a podcast, but it can also be used to identify the host(s) if none exists.
- Description: One or more sentences describing your episode to potential listeners. You can enter up to 4000 characters.
- Channel (optional): Can only be updated when managing channels. You can add your show to a channel if you want it to be grouped with other shows on your account or if you are adding paid content to your show. Keep in mind that moving a show between channels could affect your subscriber access. A show can be associated with only one channel.
- Type: Indicates whether it’s an episodic or serial show. Episodic shows can be consumed without any specific order. Apple Podcasts will present newest episodes first and display the publish date (required) of each episode. If organized into seasons, the newest season will be presented first — otherwise, episodes will be grouped by year published, newest first. Serial shows are intended to be consumed in sequential order. Apple Podcasts will present the oldest episodes first and display the episode numbers of each episode. If organized into seasons, the newest season will be presented first and episode numbers must be given for each episode.
- Update Frequency: This appears in Apple Podcasts and lets your listeners know how often you plan to update your show with new episodes.
- Category: Select the category that best reflects the content of your show. If available, you can also define a subcategory.
- Explicit Content: Podcasts containing explicit material canвЂt be distributed in some countries and regions.
- Language: The language spoken on the show.
- Show Website: If your show has a website, enter the URL.
- Copyright: If your show is copyrighted, enter the copyright details.
- Click Save.
- On the left, choose Availability.
- Countries or Regions: Choose where you want your show to be available. You can edit availability at any time. В В В
- Distribution: Choose whether you’d like to make your feed publicly available. Selecting this option makes your RSS feed available in the Apple Podcasts Catalog API which allows podcast app developers to include your show in their app. В В В
- Countries or Regions: Choose where you want your show to be available. You can edit availability at any time.
- Show Release: Choose whether you want your show to be released right away or select a date and time to release it on Apple Podcasts.
- Click Save.
- On the Show Information page, submit your show for review.
Important: Your show will display a Published status, however, it will not be available on Apple Podcasts until an episode is added and published.
When you’re ready to add episodes to your show, click Episodes. Learn more about how to create an episode.
Add an RSS feed to your show in Apple Podcasts Connect
The show metadata in your RSS feed will override any show metadata you entered in Apple Podcasts Connect.
- In Apple Podcasts Connect, click on the show you want to edit.
- On the show details page, under More Actions, click Add RSS Feed.
- Enter the RSS feed URL.
- Click Save.
If your RSS feed validates, all episodes associated with the feed will be available on Apple Podcasts.

Change the RSS feed URL
Depending on the status of your original podcast RSS feed URL, you have two options to change it — in Apple Podcasts Connect or through the server where your feed is hosted.
If you use a third-party hosting solution
Most major third-party hosting providers can help you migrate your RSS feed to a different URL by implementing a redirect. This way, you don’t need to perform additional actions in Apple Podcasts Connect as it’s all handled by your hosting provider.
Moreover, changing the RSS feed URL through your hosting provider ensures that all followers (even those outside of Apple Podcasts) are seamlessly migrated to the new feed.
However, if your hosting provider is unable to change the RSS feed on your behalf, or if you no longer have access to the original podcast RSS feed, you can follow these steps in Apple Podcasts Connect to ensure that followers on Apple Podcasts are migrated to the new feed:
- Select Podcasts.
- Select the podcast you want to update.
- Select Edit next to the RSS feed URL.
- Enter the new RSS feed URL and click Save.
Apple Podcasts Connect will update your RSS feed URL. Allow up to 24 hours for the podcast to be updated to the new RSS feed URL.
If you host your own RSS feed
If you don’t use a third-party podcast hosting solution and you directly edit or maintain the original RSS feed, follow the steps below. This will ensure that your existing followers (even those outside of Apple Podcasts) are seamlessly migrated and are not affected by this process:
- Set the web server where your feed is hosted to return an HTTP 301 redirect response when it receives a request for the old feed.
- Use the tag in your new feed to point to the new URL. This response updates Apple Podcasts with the new feed URL and your subscribers continue to receive new episodes automatically.
Important: Don’t set the tag to the Mirror URL listed in Apple Podcasts Connect.
Contact your web server’s support teams for further assistance.
To ensure subscribers receive your most recent episodes from the new feed URL, maintain the tag and 301 redirect response for at least four weeks.
Warning: Make sure the original episode GUIDs are maintained and don’t change. Failing to comply with these guidelines may result in duplicate episodes being shown to listeners, misrepresentation of data in Analytics, and may ultimately affect your show’s status on Apple Podcasts.
What’s an episode GUID?
Each episode in your podcast has a globally unique identifier (GUID). It’s very important that each episode has a unique, alphanumeric GUID that never changes, even if an episode’s metadata, like title or enclosure URL, do change.
If a GUID is not provided, an episode’s enclosure URL will be used instead. In this case, make sure that an episode’s enclosure URL is also unique and never changes.
