Should You Buy the Apple TV?
The Apple TV is Apple’s set-top box. The latest Apple TV 4K features a faster A12 Bionic chip, support for high-framerate HDR, and a redesigned Siri Remote. Apple typically updates the Apple TV infrequently, releasing a new model around every three years.
Announced in April of 2021, the second-generation Apple TV 4K is the newest Apple TV in Apple’s lineup and is fairly early in its product cycle, meaning that now is a good time to buy it.
There are two different Apple TV models currently available. One is the Apple TV HD from 2015, featuring support for displays with up to 1080p resolutions, an A8 chip, 32GB of storage, HDMI 1.4, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.0, and a price of $149. The other is the second-generation Apple TV 4K from 2021, featuring support for displays with up to 4K resolutions, an A12 Bionic chip, up to 64GB of storage, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and a price starting at $179. Both come with the same redesigned Siri Remote.
The second-generation Apple TV 4K has better specifications in almost every area than the older Apple TV HD and will be much more future-proof. Due to its age and lower specifications, it is difficult to recommend buying an Apple TV HD, especially since it is only $20 cheaper than the second-generation Apple TV 4K.
Almost all potential customers should choose the second-generation Apple TV 4K. The only customers who should consider buying the Apple TV HD are people who are on a strict budget, have no intention of buying a 4K TV, and are comfortable with buying a six-year-old device.
If you need more help deciding between the Apple TV 4K and the Apple TV HD, or the two 4K Apple TV models, we have guides available that provide some useful feature comparisons.
The Second-Generation Apple TV 4K
Contents
Apple in April 2021 introduced a new version of the Apple TV 4K, with an all-new Siri Remote a faster processor, and a few other notable internal improvements.
Design wise, the second-generation Apple TV 4K continues to look like the prior-generation version, with a simple black box design that plugs into a television set over HDMI.
The Apple TV 4K, as the name suggests, offers 4K resolution with support for high frame rate HDR content, including HDR10 and Dolby Vision. For full performance, it needs to be paired with a 4K TV and 4K content is also required.
Apple says it is working with FOX Sports, NBCUniversal, Paramount+, Red Bull TV, Canal+, and more to stream content in high frame rate HDR. AirPlay now supports high frame rates so Dolby Vision video shot on iPhone 12 can be displayed in full resolution on the new Apple TV 4K.
There’s a faster A12 Bionic chip inside the new Apple TV 4K that will offer a GPU boost, faster video decoding, better audio processing, and improved gameplay.
Though the design of the Apple TV 4K has not changed, Apple overhauled the Siri Remote, which now features an all-new design with a one-piece aluminum body. There’s a clickpad control wheel with five-way navigation, with the clickpad also supporting touch gestures. The clickpad’s outer ring supports a circular gesture that lets you jog through TV and movie content.
The Siri Remote is larger than the prior version and it includes a dedicated power button that controls a TV’s power. It also includes volume buttons, a mute button, an option for pausing and fast-forwarding, and a menu button. There’s a side button for activating Siri.
Apple added a new color balance process that uses the iPhone’s front-facing camera to fine-tune the colors on the Apple TV by comparing the color to industry-standard specifications. This works with the new Apple TV 4K as well as older models.
The Apple TV 4K is priced starting at $179, and it became available for purchase on Friday, April 30. The Siri Remote is available separately for $59.
Apple has discontinued the prior-generation 4K Apple TV that was released in 2017, but the Apple TV HD continues to be available for purchase.

How to Buy
The Apple TV 4K became available for purchase as of Friday, April 30, and the first orders began arriving on May 21.
The Apple TV 4K is priced at $179 for 32GB storage, or $199 for 64GB storage. Apple is also continuing to sell the Apple TV HD, which is priced at $149 for 32GB storage. The Apple TV HD supports 1080p resolution rather than 4K resolution.
The 2021 Siri Remote can also be purchased on a standalone basis for $59.

iPhone 14 Pro Models to Feature Hole-Punch Display
The high-end iPhone 14 Pro models launching in 2022 are expected to have a hole-punch display, according to Korean website The Elec. The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to feature the upgraded display, which will do away with the notch used in the current iPhone models.
The hole-punch cutout will allow Apple to provide a larger display area while still leaving room for the front-facing camera, and it is a design that Android devices have used for a few years now. If Apple does transition to this design, the Face ID hardware will need to be moved under the display.
Two additional non-Pro iPhones, which will measure in at 6.1 and 6.7 inches, will continue to have a notch, with Apple limiting the hole-punch design to the more expensive iPhones. Apple is doing away with the 5.4-inch «iPhone mini» in 2022, and is instead going to offer a four iPhone lineup in 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes.
The Elec says that Apple will also be sourcing LTPO OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro models to allow for 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, technology already used in the iPhone 13 Pro models this year. Samsung supplied the OLED panels that Apple used for the iPhone 13 Pro models, but Apple could source some displays from LG Display in 2022.
A hole-punch display has been rumored several times before, and notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said repeatedly that some iPhone 14 Pro models are likely to feature the technology.
Apple Car Project Loses Three Key Engineers
As Apple gears up to release a fully autonomous vehicle, it is continuing to lose key people who are working on the project, reports Bloomberg. Over the last several weeks, three engineers have departed the company.
Apple’s chief engineer for radar systems, Eric Rogers, left for Joby Aviation, a company working on electric aerial ridesharing. Alex Clarabut, an engineering manager for the battery team, and Stephen Spiteri, a hardware engineering manager, both joined Archer Aviation, a company that is developing an air taxi.
Earlier this month, Apple Car engineering director Michael Schwekutsch left Apple for Archer Aviation as well, and back in September, Apple Car project lead Doug Field left Apple for Ford after three years of heading up Apple Car development.
According to Bloomberg, Apple has lost six members of the project’s management team in 2021 alone, but it has also brought on important new hires like Ulrich Kranz, former CEO of self-driving startup Canoo, and CJ Moore, who worked at Tesla and has expertise in self-driving software.
Apple’s work on an autonomous vehicle has been plagued by managerial shifts, changes in focus, and hiring issues almost since it began. With Field’s departure, Apple brought on Apple Watch chief Kevin Lynch to work on the Apple Car, and he is working alongside AI chief John Giannandrea.
Under Lynch’s leadership, the Apple Car project is moving forward with the ambitious aim of producing an autonomous electric vehicle that does not require human intervention, which no other car manufacturer has been able to achieve.
Apple is hoping to release a self-driving car by 2025, but the timeline may ultimately prove to be too aggressive.
Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 136 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements
Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.
Safari Technology Preview release 136 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for CPU, GPU Process, JavaScript, Web API, Media, Web Animations, WebAuthn, Private Click Measurement, Web Extensions, and more.
The current Safari Technology Preview release is built on the Safari 15.4 update and it includes Safari 15 features introduced in macOS Monterey. There’s a new streamlined tab bar with support for Tab Groups to organize tabs, along with improved support for Safari Web Extensions.
Live Text allows users to select and interact with text in images on the web, but macOS Monterey and an M1 Mac is required. There’s also Quick Notes support for adding links and Safari highlights to remember important information and ideas. The new Safari Technology Preview update is available for both macOS Big Sur and macOS Monterey, the newest version of the Mac operating system.
The Safari Technology Preview update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.
Apple’s aim with Safari Technology Preview is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. Safari Technology Preview can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.
Instagram Reintroducing Chronological Feed Option in 2022
Instagram is planning to reintroduce a version a chronological feed option in 2022, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said today in a Senate panel on teen safety (via Engadget).
«We’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year,» Mosseri said, explaining that Instagram believes in giving people more control over how they view content.
Such a feature has apparently been in the works «for months» with Instagram targeting a launch in the first quarter of 2022.
When Instagram first launched, it provided a chronological feed that displayed the newest Instagram posts when you opened up the app, but in June 2016, Instagram swapped over to an algorithmic feed that displays posts based on relevancy.
Instagram has not had an option for a chronological feed for the past five years, so introducing an alternative to the algorithmic feed will be a major change. There have been multiple complaints about the Instagram feed over the years, and in 2018, the company did tweak the algorithm to make newer content show up more often.
Instagram has claimed that its algorithm is designed to surface the moments that people care about the most, highlighting posts based on interaction frequency and timeliness, but many Instagram users will likely be happy to have a chronological option.
Apple Increasing App Store Prices in Turkey Amid Continued Economic Instability
Apple today informed developers that it is raising the prices of apps and in-app purchases in Turkey due to changes in foreign exchange rates. The pricing changes will go into effect in the next few days.
When taxes or foreign exchange rates change, we sometimes need to update prices on the App Store in certain regions and/or adjust your proceeds.
In the next few days, prices of apps and in-app purchases (excluding auto-renewable subscriptions) on the App Store will increase in Turkey. Your proceeds will be adjusted accordingly and will be calculated based on the tax-exclusive price.
Once these changes go into effect, the Pricing and Availability section of My Apps will be updated. You can change the price of your apps and in-app purchases (including auto-renewable subscriptions) at any time in App Store Connect. If you offer subscriptions, you can choose to preserve prices for existing subscribers.
Tier 1 apps in the country will now be priced starting at 16.99 lira, up from the 10.99 price that was set in October when Apple first raised its App Store pricing in Turkey. 16.99 is equivalent to approximately $1.24 at the current time.
Apple in late November temporarily halted sales of devices in Turkey with the deepening of the country’s economic crisis. Apple’s online store in the country stopped allowing customers to make purchases, as did some retail locations.
Apple resumed sales in Turkey a few days after the pause, introducing significant price increases. An iPhone 13, for example, is priced at 14.999 TL, up from the original 11.999 TL price before the hike.
The value of the Turkish lira has seen a significant drop over the course of the last few weeks, continuing a trend that began last year. A Turkish lira is now equivalent to approximately 0.073 U.S. dollars.

Apple Launches Redesigned Open Source Website
Apple today introduced a redesigned website for its Open Source projects, which houses Apple’s open source work like Swift, WebKit, ResearchKit, FoundationDB, and more. The updated site can be found at opensource.apple.com.
The site includes two main sections, including Featured Projects to showcase a selection of Apple’s open source work, and a second section for Releases.
The Featured Projects section includes Apple Projects that are led by Apple and developed alongside the open source community, and Community Projects that are headed up by organizations outside of Apple but contributed to by Apple engineers.
The Releases section will see Apple making its open source releases available as git repositories on GitHub, which will make them more accessible to software developers. Apple has added improved capabilities for search, seeing differences between different versions, and browsing through the code in macOS, iOS, and developer tools.
Apple Wins Stay in Epic Case, Won’t Have to Implement App Store Changes Tomorrow
Apple has successfully won a stay on an injunction that would have required it to make sweeping App Store changes as soon as December 9, so for the time being, Apple can continue to require developers to use its in-app purchase system without offering alternatives.
The judge in the ongoing Epic v. Apple lawsuit had ordered Apple to allow developers to provide customers with alternatives to in-app purchases within their apps, and she gave the Cupertino company until December 9 to implement the changes. Apple asked for a stay, which she denied, and after that denial, Apple kicked the request up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The appeals court granted the stay, and said that Apple has demonstrated that its appeal raises «serious questions» about the ruling in the original case.
Apple has demonstrated, at minimum, that its appeal raises serious questions on the merits of the district court’s determination that Epic Games, Inc. failed to show Apple’s conduct violated any antitrust laws but did show that the same conduct violated California’s Unfair Competition Law. [. ]
Therefore, we grant Apple’s motion to stay part (i) of paragraph (1) of the permanent injunction. The stay will remain in effect until the mandate issues in this appeal.
The court has stayed the enforcement of the injunction until it is able to fully hear the case, which could take several months. While the court considers Apple’s appeal, Apple will be able to operate the App Store as is.
In the original ruling, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers said that Apple would be prohibited from restricting developers from including «in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms,» paving the way for alternate payment options that do not require Apple to use the in-app purchase system.
Apple has argued that the proposed App Store changes could «upset the careful balance between developers and customers provided by the App Store,» resulting in irreparable harm to Apple and consumers, and Apple has also claimed that it needs more time to work through «the complex and rapidly evolving legal, technological, and economic issues» that the required change would cause.
Should the appeals court ultimately rule in Apple’s favor after examining the case, the injunction could be vacated permanently. Apple’s win today means we will need to wait several more months for the legal process to play out before any App Store changes are implemented.
As for Fortnite, there is no clear path for the app to return to the App Store and it appears it will continue to be unavailable on Apple’s platform.
macOS 12.1 Fixes Menu Bar Icons Obscured by Notch on 2021 MacBook Pros
Apple on Tuesday seeded the macOS Monterey 12.1 Release Candidate to developers for testing, and according to the release notes, the update resolves an issue with the notch obscuring «menu bar extras» on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
«Menu bar extras» are the tiny icons that appear on the right side of the menu bar, providing users with convenient access to app-specific controls. These icons could become overlapped by the notch on the new MacBook Pro models, causing the icons to be hidden or only partially visible, but Apple said this bug has been fixed in macOS 12.1.
As for top-level menus like File, Edit, and View on the left side of the menu bar, developers can update their Mac apps to play friendly with the notch. As a last resort for apps that have not yet been updated, users can enable a «scale to fit below built-in camera» setting for the app to adjust the active area of the MacBook Pro’s display, ensuring that the app’s menus appear below the notch and are always visible.
These changes come after several users complained about the notch interfering with menu bar items on the new MacBook Pro models.
This release also includes bug fixes for your Mac:
— Desktop and Screen Saver may appear blank after selecting photos from the Photos library
— Trackpad could become unresponsive to taps or clicks
— External displays may not charge some MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers when connected using Thunderbolt or USB-C
— HDR video playback on YouTube.com could cause 2021 MacBook Pro computers to panic
— Menu bar extras may be obscured by the camera housing on 2021 MacBook Pro computers
— MagSafe may stop charging on 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro computers when lid is closed and system is shut down
macOS 12.1 is expected to be released to all users as early as next week. When available, users can install the update by clicking on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen, clicking on About This Mac, and clicking on the Software Update button.
