Grilled Apple Slices With Cinnamon and Honey
So. Yeah. The title basically tells all the secrets. But before I go into more detail, let’s just enjoy the picture, because this really is an amazing picture.
Oooooh…. Ahhhhhhhh. YUM. So freaking good. So these were Honeycrisp apples. Which, coincidentally, are my favorite apple. Why, you ask?
Well, they’re the sweetest. They combine everything I love into a perfect apple: crunchy, crispy, juicy and sweet. AND…(a bonus) they’re great for grilling.
We cooked these with indirect heat on our Weber Performer charcoal grill. We’ve tried grilling a variety of other apples, but these seem to hold up the best.
I could seriously eat this entire plate of grilled apples right now. So good. Please go try this. Seriously. If you happen to be grilling anything at all, throw a few apples on there.
This makes an awesome dessert (maybe serve with some ice cream or whipped cream?), or a side dish, which is what we do often.
Yes, I have been known to let my children consume sugar with dinner…if it has something to do with a fruit or a vegetable. That’s my rationale, at least. So go make this. Your family will thank you. Your friends will thank you. And you can take all the credit.

Want to get your whole house smelling like an amazing homemade apple pie, without fussing over pie dough or pastry?
I’m here to tell you that making these easy baked apples is the best kind of aromatherapy, and they taste pretty delicious.
The sliced apples bake in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and other spices, which absolutely makes your house smell amazing!
I guarantee it’s a million times better than a pumpkin-spice candle, and you get to eat it, too.
This simple, healthy treat combines firm, sweet apples with melted butter, brown sugar and spices in a baking dish.
How to bake sliced apples
Baking sliced apples is one of the easiest ways to quickly cook them.
- Toss the apple slices with butter, sugar, spices, cornstarch salt and vanilla together in a bowl
- Bake the dish in a hot oven (425 degrees) for about 30 minutes.
- The apples will become tender and golden, while the sauce bubbles and almost turns into a caramel sauce, bubbling and delicious.
For my taste, these lightly sweetened roasted apples fall into the category of a sweet breakfast treat or even dessert.
I love warm roasted apples in a bowl, with a big spoonful of creamy yogurt and Olive Oil Granola, or over a stack of healthy whole grain pancakes.
The best apples for baking
To make sure your spice-roasted apples turn out perfectly tender or if you’re wondering what to do with old apples you might have in the hous, use one or a combination of these apple varieties,
- Honeycrisp: This is a great all-around apple to eat of hand, and also a champ for baked desserts. It’s snappy, tart and juicy.
- Gala: A winner for pies and all kinds of baking, Gala apples taste sweet and mild when raw, and they’re a popular choice for professional pie bakers.
- Jonagold: A little harder to find, Jonagolds are a cross between Golden Delicious and the heirloom Jonathan apple. Jonagolds have good flavor and firm texture.
- Granny Smith: Tart, crisp Grannies are versatile for snacking and baking.
- Braeburn: A flavorful variety with a perfect balance of sweetness and crispness.

Why This Recipe Works
Baked Apples are one of the many foods that make me think of my mom. One of her signature meals growing up was pan-fried pork chops with baked apples and a crisp green salad.
If there were ever leftover apples, I’d bring a fork to the fridge and enjoy them cold. No plate needed, just straight to my mouth. They are a delicious side dish, especially when served with pork, and they can also act an incredible dessert. Serve solo or with a bowl of vanilla ice cream!
This recipe is a delicious treat, similar to Apple Crisp but without the oatmeal topping. It’s a bit of a healthier option and comes together much more quickly and easily.
If you have a colorful bowl of apples sitting on your counter, go bake up some fun treats!
Recipe Ingredients
Apples – Use medium baking apples such as honeycrisp, gala, golden delicious, jonagold or granny smith.
Brown sugar – If you prefer, you can add more naturally sweet apples and reduce the amount of brown sugar you added. Other sugar substitutes that would be great are maple syrup, coconut sugar or stevia.
Spice Mixture – Feel free to add cloves or ground ginger to your apples for a little more complex taste. Just a little goes a long way.
How To Make Baked Apple Slices with Cinnamon
Step 1
Fill a large bowl halfway with water and add the lemon juice. Add the apples to the lemon water as they are sliced.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a square baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter. Mix well.
Step 2
Remove the apples from the water and pat dry. Place the apples in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. Top with the sugar mixture.
Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Serve immediately, either with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or as a solo dessert.
Recipe Notes
- U se a paring knife to core apples and peel them or I have found that I love using my apple corer for a quick turn around.
- Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to your apples, it’s a great addition! If you want to know how to make your own, check out my homemade vanilla recipe.
- Drizzle homemade salted caramel sauce over the apples for an additional flavor!
- Use this as a quick and easy pie filling, too! If you are excited to make apple empanadas, or mini pies, this is a great filling instead of popping open a can.
What Apples Are Best For Baking?

FAQ About Apples
Good news! Apples are very good for you! Apples are high in dietary fiber and pectin found in the peels of the apples.
Dogs can eat apples, as they are a nutritious snack for dogs. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, helping immunity and providing other benefits.
Apples do not align with a keto diet. One medium apple contains more than 20 g of carbs, making it too carb-heavy for this low-carb eating plan.
Apples can be frozen! They can be frozen whole for up to 9 months, or prepare applesauce, pie filling or entire pies and freeze them that way instead.
The recommendation is that you enjoy an apple in the morning hours of each day. This will help you avoid poor digestion at night. The fruit can help your stomach to empty more slowly, helping you to stay feeling full longer and not prone to snack/eat between meals.
When baking with apples, use a variety of apples. At the very least, use two kinds: one sweet and one tart. My personal favorite combo is Granny Smith apples and Honeycrisp apples.

This was marvelous! I’m certain it would be delightful as written but I made a change in the apples used. After apple picking a few weeks ago some of the crisp, sweet apples became grainy. I used those rather than tossing. I couldn’t tell you the variety as they all get mixed up. I mixed up the slices with everything but forgot the sugar and they were already in the baking pan! No worries, sprinkling a little less overtop and stirring in after removing the foil, worked out perfectly! I’ll make this again. yummy.

Apple slices with cinnamon
Warm, soft cinnamon baked apple slices with no added sugar. This healthy 3-ingredient recipe is so easy to make in the oven or crockpot. These healthy baked apples are perfect for serving with ice cream, on pancakes, or drizzled with almond butter for a snack!
When autumn arrives and the weather cools, nothing beats warm cinnamon apples. This easy baked apple recipe (though hardly a recipe!) is my definition of comfort throughout the fall and winter. These are the baked apple slices from my childhood. The exact recipe my mom used to make. These baked apples require just few simple ingredients that transform sweet, crisp apples into warm a gooey compote reminiscent of apple pie filling.
These three-ingredient baked apple slices can be made in the oven or in a slower cooker. Both methods work great and result in sweet, gooey apples. I highly recommend making a batch on the weekend so you can enjoy them throughout the week. This no-sugar-added recipe makes for great breakfast, snack or healthy dessert. I like eating these warm on top of Greek-style yogurt or on top of oatmeal with a spoonful of almond butter. If you want to take these baked apple slices more of a dessert route, try them with my sweet cashew cream or a scoop of your favorite ice cream.
Healthy Baked Cinnamon Apples Ingredients
This healthy baked apple recipe requires only three ingredients, plus a splash of water. These baked apples have no added sugar. The sweetness comes from the natural sugars in the apples that concentrates as they cook. Here’s what you’ll need to make these healthy baked cinnamon apple slices.
- Apples – using a variety of sweet baking apples such as Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Fuji, or Jonagold that hold up in the oven works best. But honestly, you can use any apples you have on hand.
- Water – a touch of water helps prevent the apples from sticking to the pot and burning. This also helps create a the gooeyness, reminiscent of apple pie filling.
- Lemon juice – the tart lemon juice provides a balance to the sweet apples.
- Cinnamon – these aren’t cinnamon apples without the cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon has numerous health benefits but I actually prefer the taste Vietnamese cinnamon. It’s a little spicier and more flavorful. You could also switch things up by adding in nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cardamon, or a blend of these spices.

Apple NUTRITION
Apples have a low glycemic index, meaning they won’t raise blood sugar levels as high as other simple carbohydrates. This is due to their high fiber content. Since most of the fiber in apples is found in the skin, I recommend keeping the skin on when eating apples or using them in recipes. Fiber is so important for digestion, blood sugar stabilization, and detoxification.
Apples are also a good source of vitamin C potassium and the antioxidants quercetin and catechin. Quercetin has an anti-inflammatory effect, whereas catechin has been shown to improve brain and muscle function. (1) (2) (3)
