Apple space grey scratch

Question: Q: Scratches on space grey aluminium body — Is there a way to get rid of them?

II’ve managed to scuff my Apple watch sports edition in space grey and it’s showing silver underneath — really annoyed with myself but was wondering if there’s a way to buff it out or re-coat it?

The case of Apple Watch Sport has an anodized finish: «Each case is machined and polished, then blasted with microscopic zirconia beads to achieve a consistent, satin texture. A special anodizing process creates a hard, clear outer layer that helps protect against scratches and corrosion.»

Apple does not recommend polishing or buffing the watch with abrasives:

Rather than fixing the original scratch, use of any abrasives (including mechanical polishing) will only cause further damage to the anodized finish. There is no way to restore an anodized finish other than by completely removing the coating and re-anodizing the whole case.

Auminum is anodized and over time through oxidation it will lose colour, space grey is a great finish to Apple products and they do get the silver pots that is the result of oxidation, if you really want to rid yourself of those silver marks then I suggest removing the space grey finish or using marker pens, I find when it comes to getting scratches that do annoy, buff it out with normal polish and a microfiber cloth, then once the scratch looks less faded then use the marker pen to fill in the scratch so the colour sinks into the scratch covering it up, gently rub it away so it making sure not to rub to hard as you don’t want to lose the cover up, there are some good touch up pens out there that will do the job for you, you just have to shop around

Silver vs Space Gray — Scratches?

I just got my new 16″ (i9/ 5500M 8GB/ 16GB / 1TB) a few days ago.
But unfortunately I had to notice pretty loud coil whine and some scratches near the USB C port.
Therefore I’m thinking about returning it and getting a new one.

As I am extremely sensitive to scratches, I am thinking about getting the silver model instead of the grey one.

Does anyone have any experience if this is really less prone to scratches?

I hate those scratch marks, especially near the ports.

Silver will still scratch — the difference here is that they will be harder to see and harder to notice.

It’s a machine and a tool. As soon as you start using it, it will begin to wear, scratch, etc. It’s a part of life. Just enjoy it.

I saw a well used Space Gray laptop the other day that had been beaten to hell and probably used as a target in a gun range. It looked oddly beautiful in that worn look. Kind of looking forward to making my own look like that now.

I’ve been using Macbooks since before they were MacBooks. All of them looked great once you’ve wiped the daily grime off them.

My space grey 16″ was less than 2 weeks old when I picked it up and put my iPad — in its leather case — on it and now there’s a scratch on the lid. This really annoys me especially when I’m in a meeting and the lid’s closed on the table — you could call it OCD, I just hate that my £5k laptop’s damaged.

Whether Apple are skimping on the anodising to gouge even more money out of us suckers, or whether it’s something about space grey showing scratches more, I don’t know.

I’m so pissed off about this I’ve ordered a dBrand skin to cover up the scratch and prevent others. As I’ve no chance of *feeling* the new skin, I’ve ordered it on spec and hope it doesn’t feel like some crappy corporate windos laptop. We’ll see when it arrives.

Knowing how I feel know, I think that probably the silver colour would be more scratch resistant. Unless, that is, that Apple are a bunch of cheapskates on their materials.

Does the silver scratch easier than the space gray?

Just something I was wondering as it seems like a lot of people with the silver are complaining about scratches on the shiny edges.

What ya think?

Just saw this video where the guy says the Apple leather case scratched the sides of hie silver.

Check this video at 3:25 where he shows the two watches.

I have always put a Apple OEM leather case on every iPhone since the 4 series and never had an issue with damaging the device.

But I take very good care of my phones and most look as good as the day I bought it even after I have used it for a year. Just the way I am.

Stainless steel gets micro scratches on it fairly easily. The space gray does it too, it just isn’t as easy to see because it’s darker.

It’s no different with the Apple Watch. I’ve had every version of the stainless steel watch and it always gets scratched up and I baby them.

I was very lucky to get my space grey model from T Mobile on preorder day. I had ordered the silver model and they sent me a space grey instead which I actually like more now that I have it.

Looks like I will go with the stainless black iWatch and hopefully I won’t have any issues. Thanks for the information. That’s why I love this site.

I spend most of my time between here and the CrackBerry forums where I am a ambassador. I also have a KeyOne I use. I am really liking the X and has become my daily driver since I got it on launch day.

I was just happy to get the X period. I had my device selected in my Apple store app and was up at 2:45 on preorder day and hit buy at 3:05 and I came back with 2-3 weeks delivery and I couldn’t believe it only 5 minutes in and I receive that delivery date.

So I went to the T Mobile website and was able to order one and got my email saying my order was confirmed and then received my tracking number and the space grey one showed up at my door on launch day and I was a happy man.

Going to order another space grey one for my nephew for Christmas tomorrow and hoping to get it in 2-3 weeks. Now it’s order and wait and see.
