V useful app despite irritating bug
This app is very useful because of how versatile it is in playing different media formats on my iPhone. I got it primarily to play my non Audible audiobooks. I wanted an app that made it easy to import files and the app makes it very straightforward. It also allows you to import your files a number of different ways for your convenience. I used to use another app that changed this so fingers crossed the VLC developers don’t!
There is one very irritating bug though. When importing an audiobook if there are different chapters it lists them randomly in an arbitrary order it calls ‘album’ order. There is an option to order the chapters alphanumerically but it doesn’t stick and you have to redo the order every time you listen or risk jumping to a random chapter next. A pain!
I still use the app a lot though as it’s so easy to get my audiobooks uploaded to it. Remember you get all this functionality and it’s free — Just wish it was perfect!
Excellent Functions and FREE
I don’t know why some reviewers have complained.
I have downloaded this app today and so far have found it to be faultless with good functionality. Some complain about not having folders, you don’t need folders. For example I use it for karaoke videos from different decades, so in-front of each song title I will put 1980’s or 1990’s etc. The song is then automatically placed into the ‘video groups’ folders and they all go into the correct and relevant folders. The other great feature is you can set up playlists and delete them without any concern of deleting videos as they only delete from the playlists. You can search for videos which is another great feature. Personally I think this is an excellent app as not only does it have a video library but also an audio library. I looked at other media player apps, been using one for a while that had faults numerous times and crashed whereas this one whilst loading videos did not crash. I am hoping it continues to be excellent.
Highly recommend! Hugely underrated!
I’ve been using this app for a while now. And to be honest it’s my most used app on my phone. Even above Instagram and that’s saying something. I used to have an iPod with thousands of songs. However now I use the drag and drop feature from my computer desktop to my phone using this app. It’s painless simple and I couldn’t ask for a better app. It’s video playback is excellent for those home videos too. It’s just like the pc version of VLC player and it’s very intuitive to use.
I don’t often write reviews and I wasn’t even asked to write this review, but I just had to today because the update is excellent and this app doesn’t get enough appreciation. I love this app because it helps me take thousands of songs on my phone just by dragging them onto the browser. It’s very easy to create playlist too. Which is probably the main feature I’m most thankful for. Over all it’s a must have app, and I would highly recommend using it for music on your phone.

Almost as good as it used to be.
. but not quite. A few months ago there was a VLC update that made your users go ballistic. Lucky for me I noticed this before updating and decided install VLC on my iPhone to monitor the app’s rehabilitation while continuing to use the non-screwed-up version on my iPad, where my video library lives. At the time, for me, the dealbreaker was that thumbnails were no longer using whatever frame a given video had stopped on (I like being able to choose my own thumbnail). I just noticed on my phone that at some point this important feature was restored. Great! HOWEVER. what is the need for empty space between thumbnails? And moreover, what is the need for placing the title below instead of upon the thumbnails? Both of these design choices decrease how large they can be and how many can seen onscreen at once. When I compare the library interface of the current version on my iPhone to the non-updated version on my iPad (v3.1.9) I much prefer the old view with them all packed together. Please make this an option in the settings so I can update VLC on my iPad. I’ll continue to monitor the app’s progress on my phone and when it is finally satisfactory again I will upgrade and give VLC the five stars I wish it deserved.

Thanks for your detailed feedback!
The iPad keyboard is on our list, especially for those basic playback controls.
An iPhone based remote makes sense indeed, but is a bit more complex to do. It is on our list for the long run, but will not be worked on immediately.
Library management will be greatly improved later this year by a complete rewrite of the current user interface.
To leave a movie to go back to the library during playback, don’t swipe down, but use the pinch gesture.
Vertical Stretch & .srt problem
It’s now March 2021 and I don’t see any update that addresses the issues I’m still having with aspect ratios on my 6S Plus iPhone. I simply cannot buy a new phone with the 16:10 aspect ratio. I was told this issue would be resolved at the beginning of the year. What happened?
Thank for responding to my request for the return of “Vertical” stretch on IOS. But now I’ve discovered a problem with stretching 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 on both my iPhone 6S Plus and my iPad mini. A couple of years ago I created .srt English subtitles for Region 2 French Columbo episodes, as you know this 1970’s TV show is in 4:3 aspect. I haven’t watched them for quite a while, when I did the only option to fill the 16:9 screen, is “wide fit” which now cuts part of subtitles off. In the past, I’ve always been able to select 16:9 on either my iPhone or my TV’s remote, right now it appears that most of the aspect ratios are messed up. Please, Please fix this issue. VLC is a great app for studying foreign languages, especially because of the ability to adjust the play speed by 1% increments.

Thanks for your detailed report. I can definitely understand the problem and will try to reproduce and fix it!
Version 3.2.0 ruined it
Update: my previous issue was resolved, but unfortunately, I really REALLY wish I could revert back to before I updated to this latest version (3.2.0). Now, TV shows are no longer grouped together, and my video tab just looks like a huge mess! It seems like in this update you spent too much time focusing on how the music part works, especially for a VIDEO player. I never really understood why there was a music option anyway to be honest. I don’t like the new playlist system because as someone else said, the main screen is still wicked cluttered. Also, when I tried to just put a tv show into its own playlist, they are all kinds of out of order and no way to organize them. BOO. This does not feel like an update, but a way to turn the video player into a music player. So now I have no way to get files off the main screen, no way to group episodes of a tv show together, and I have to hunt and hunt through all these video files to find what I’m looking for, but boy. that empty music section sure looks fancy.
Now the app no longer responds to my touch. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but to no avail. I don’t know how to use an app on a touch device that doesn’t respond to touch. It is useless now. Too bad because it was the reigning champ of video players for so long.

Room for improvement
I love VLC and use it on almost all my devices.. two of the things which I believe can greatly improve usage are:
1) A proper movie library like the one Infuse has, showcasing the movie info.
2) Network stream should include Mega in Cloud Services, the others are good but we tend to store all our movies on Mega and other players are including Mega by default.
These two minor improvements could make VLC invincible. The first one making VLC a polished, superior looking media player and the second making people’s lives easier.
Battery drain and video play back.
After the last update issue regarding 10 and 12 bit hevc was resolved however now the battery drains quickly while watching videos on smb connection from 55% to 20% in less than 40 mins. Further the video automatically jumps either to next or previous video automatically atleast once while playing a video over smb.
Fix it asap. As I now need a charger connected constantly to my phone to watch videos on this player.
FYI I am still playing hevc 10-12 bit videos so it is still much more to be fixed.
Also subtitles are not getting downloaded from the default subtitle search option.
It simply loads a blank list each time.
Developer Response ,
We cannot reproduce this problem. Please make sure to allow VLC to access devices on your local network (you actively need to allow this since iOS 14).
Must have app, lacks only 1 required feature
This is my favourite app for watching movies, however, it needs integration with Files app so that we can watch movies stored in other apps too.
Currently you need to get the movie by copying it from other apps (which is problematic on low storage memory and needs some time to copy) or by iTunes in PC (which required PC/Macbook nearby).
Also, subtitles are not displayed when they’re embedded in video file. I’m trying to watch Naruto Shippuden episodes in MKV format.
