Question: Q: -3403D error when attempting Apple Hardware Test
I want to perform an Apple Hardware Test. I restarted, pressed option+D, and a globe appeared. After a minute, however, the following text appeared:
MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 2.53 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM

I experience frequent crashes with » GPUPanic.cpp:127 » in the crash log. There is a problem related to switching between the internal Intel graphics and the Nvidia graphics. I have spoken to the local Apple retailer, which will repair the computer free of charge soon.
I do not know, however, whether this issue is related to the -340D error.

Have you found out any more information? I have this same MacBook and am experiencing this same error when trying to run diagnostics. I purchased mine recently from Mac of All Trades.

Your Macbook Pro came with OS X 10.6.x and to run Apple Hardware Test you can use bundled with your Macbook Pro Application Disc:
Your Macbook Pro probably was upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery as some of the Mac which came with 10.6.x did have that option. It seems like, some of the models might have problem to access Internet AHT:
Not sure what error -340D means but if you haven’t tried yet, i would suggest to turn OFF your router and after 2-3 mins turn ON again. Try with different network as very often issues with starting Mac in Internet Recovery are caused by network settings. This could be the same issue.

Try booting the MBP with the OPTION+D keys. It may work.
If you had the original install DVDs, you would not have this problem. Duplicates can be obtained from Apple Customer service.

Same thing, mid-2010 Macbook Pro I just upgraded to Yosemite yesterday. Everything else seems to work fine but I need to do a hardware test and can’t.

Doesn’t work. That’s where the error message comes from. Pressing D only works if you have the install DVD in the drive, Option + D loads Internet Recovery and is supposed to work as long as you’re connected to a network. Using this option is what’s causing said error message.
Oct 28, 2014 1:44 PM
Stokd is right, the error come with option +D.
The problem is that we still don’t know what type of error -3403D is.
Oct 28, 2014 7:45 PM
Same here. would like to run a memory test, with no dvd available.
So used OPTION + D, connected to my wifi. after a few seconds this error appears.

I’m getting the same error with my 13in Macbook Pro Mid-2010 running Yosemite 10.10.2. I haven’t been able to find any fixes online. Anyone have any ideas?

MY MBP was working very well with yosemite (mid 2010 build) until it ‘updated’ last week. Now I can’t even use it without it crashing!! I’m so annoyed. I get the impression that the newer the software & the older the machine, the less likely these two will cooperate together! Are there any clever techies out there who can help diagnose the problem before I wipe the hard drive & re-install from a back up? I’m only glad I have an iPad to use while I’m stuck with this problem! 😠

same error for me on macbook pro 17″ 2010
May 28, 2015 11:41 AM
Same error on MacBook Pro 13 inch Mid 2010.
I’ve tried Apple Chat but they have no knowledge about error codes like 3403D.
Is there any Genius out there who can simply explain this code?

The same issue. iMac 27 2010
Sep 6, 2015 1:41 PM
Same problem here:
— Restart with D = nothing happens;
— Restart with Opt+D = error -3403D

Same Issue, I actually have the install disc and «D» isn’t doing anything. Holding «OPTION» won’t take me to the boot selection anymore either.

Question: Q: Error code 3403D on iMac
iMac 21.5″ Mid-2010 Model 11,2 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Yosemite 10.10.5
This thing has been a terrific workhorse for nearly 7 years. Only thing I’ve had done was a new power supply in 2013.
It’s freezing intermittently — I can move the cursor but that’s all — it doesn’t activate anything. I have to restart.
So I tried to run AHT but it won’t run. Tried to run it from the internet (Command D) but again no luck — except this time it gave me that error message. Does anybody know what it means? And what I should do about it — and about the freezing?
iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Question: Q: Error code -3403D on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
This thing has been a terrific workhorse for nearly 7 years. Only thing I’ve had done was a new power supply in 2013 and had the hard drive replaced in an apple authorised store last year.
It’s not starting up, it gets nearly through the startup bar on the apple screen then comes up with the grey screen then restarts.
I have run disk first aid via firewire on my imac 27 and it says the hard drive is fine.
So I tried to run AHT but it won’t run off the cd. Tried to run it from the internet (Command D) but again no luck — except this time it gave me that error message -3403D. Does anybody know what it means? And what I should do about it — and about it not starting?

Not sure, if you have done a NVRAM/PRAM reset or SMC reset give it a try and see if it makes a difference.
Also just to make sure the you have to press only «Option» key while booting from USB drive.

Thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately I’ve already tried that option too. I am trying to get AHT to run from cd but it just automatically connects to apple.com/support when pressing D or option D on startup. Is there any other way of running AHT from the cd at all?

I’ve tried those options already but still no joy.

Then, Apple Support or Service should be able to help you.
Jul 15, 2020 6:37 AM
Try booting into Safe Mode:
Is Filevault enabled on this laptop?
Jul 15, 2020 10:47 AM
After having tried the safe mode, it just hangs on the apple screen when the bar is loading.
I am not sure if Filevault is enabled. I think I probably wouldn’t have done this. Is there any way of disabling it on startup?
Jul 15, 2020 3:19 PM
When you boot the computer do you get the login prompt right away or do you have a progress bar before you see the login prompt? The reason I’m asking about Filevault is I’ve encountered an issue with missing user accounts and if a user account goes «missing» and Filevault is enabled, then you get the non-stop reboots when the progress bar gets near 100%.
Check the health of the hard drive. I don’t know if you can do this over Firewire, but you can try running DriveDx to see it can access the health information on the drive. Post the complete DriveDx report here using the «Additional Text» icon which looks like a piece of paper.
If you cannot access the drive’s health information over Firewire, then create a Knoppix Linux USB drive using Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux). Option Boot the Knoppix USB drive and select the orange icon labeled «EFI». While Knoppix is booting the computer may appear frozen on the boot picker menu so give Knoppix lots of time to finish booting.
At the Knoppix desktop click on the «Start» menu icon on the lower left corner of the Taskbar and navigate the menus to «System Tools —> GSmartControl». Within the GSmartControl app double-click on the drive’s icon to access the drive’s health information. Post the complete health report here. GSmartControl also allows you to run the drive’s internal self diagnostics.
Another advantage to booting Knoppix is it can give you an idea if the hardware on the laptop is actually working.
