Apple Distinguished Educators
In 1995, Apple created the Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE) program to recognize K–12 and higher-education pioneers who are using Apple technology to transform teaching and learning. These are the educators who are looking to change the world. They are active leaders from around the world helping other educators rethink what’s possible with iPad and Mac to make learning deeply personal for every student.

Meet our Apple Distinguished Educators.
Today our global community of educational leaders models the ongoing pathway for professional learning through the desire to connect with peers around the world.
Ben Mountz
A science teacher for 16 years, Ben Mountz teaches Physics, Robotics and Digital Storytelling at Hanalani Schools in Mililani, Hawaii. He is passionate about infusing art and creativity into the classes he teaches. Ben’s students are expected to deliver high-quality, world-class work, so he’s constantly looking for opportunities to combine the arts and sciences in a way that engages them and brings more meaning to the work they produce.
“Whatever you produce, make sure it is high-quality,” Ben tells his students as well as his professional learning peers. “What makes you stand out is when you are willing or able to do what other people are not willing or able to do.”
To teach skills and knowledge in both art and science, Ben’s favorite apps are Keynote and GarageBand because they allow creativity to flourish in his classroom. He also believes that when students learn in a creative way, the content resonates more. He uses the Magic Move feature in Keynote to create animations that help students visualize concepts in physics like acceleration, velocity, and inertia. Ben also uses Apple TV and apps like Notability to move around the room and better interact with students.
This year, his Digital Storytelling class is giving him the freedom to take creativity with iPad even further. They’re using apps like Keynote, Clips, GarageBand and iMovie to create projects from the Everyone Can Create curriculum. One of his favorite activities is the Logo project, where students create their own personal brand. They use Keynote to create a logo that represents themselves and incorporate Magic Move to bring it to life. The logo becomes the cover for a digital portfolio students complete throughout the course.
The exercise challenges students to take something big and boil it down to find its essence. “As complex individuals, how can they summarize themselves and make that shareable?” asks Ben. He believes this project is a great way to empower students to think critically, produce quality work that reflects them personally, and build invaluable communication skills that they’ll take with them beyond his class.

Nancy Kawaja
As a Resource Teacher in Assistive Technology, Nancy Kawaja focuses her energy on finding tools that are already in a student’s pocket or backpack and are both accessible and inclusive. “Assistive devices need to look and sound like other devices,” says Nancy, which is why she chooses to work with iPad and Mac in her role in the Ottawa Catholic School Board which gives her the opportunity to reach 43 different schools.
In partnership with teachers and students, Nancy helps build independent learning plans for students with complex disabilities. “I get excited seeking ways to allow students access to all the same wonders that exist for everyone. I want to find the microphone that will amplify others.”
Her philosophy is to work from a strengths-based model looking for what is possible and not focusing on a student’s deficits. Many of her students enjoy using GarageBand which gives them an opportunity to make choices and create something beautiful using switch access. Creating animated captions with the Live Titles feature in Clips is a tool she uses for creating task analysis, step by step processes, or even describing life skills. And for pedagogical documentation, Nancy works alongside colleagues using the camera on iPad to capture evidence of learning.
Nancy believes in the importance of sharing her learning journey as an educator. “Each opportunity to share is an opportunity to learn — and to bring ideas back to my own school board, colleagues and students.” So, she shares her expertise in ongoing conversations, support, and sharing of all things accessibility related on Twitter, and by speaking at various Canadian and US conferences about accessibility and her work to empower every student.

Alfredo Mora
For over 25 years Alfredo Mora has shared his passion for technology with staff and students at the Centro Escolar del Lago school in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico. As Technology Coordinator, Alfredo coaches his staff on the full range of Apple products and software, but he is most passionate about teaching the real world impact of learning to code with Swift. “Our school is dedicated to trying new learning methods that will have the greatest impact on the lives of our students. So, much of our time is dedicated to adopting programming themes in different subjects and real world scenarios.”
Having taught programming for over 15 years at Centro Escolar del Lago, Alfredo was quick to introduce Swift into his school when it first launched. He uses the Apple Teacher program and Everyone Can Code curriculum to train his staff, and encourages students with no previous coding experience to earn their Swift Playgrounds badge as a way to give them more confidence and expertise.
To help young students overcome the challenge of transitioning block-based coding to text, he starts as early as possible. Using iPad, Alfredo combines reading and writing code with personalized learning in his digital innovation class. “At this age, students are improving their English language skills while learning about innovative ways that technology can impact their community.”
Alfredo knows his students are successful when they’ve developed the skills to create content that positively impacts their own lives, their school, or community. He launched a social entrepreneurship program where primary, secondary and high school students create a business plan using app development as a means to solve social problems. To date his students have created over 50 apps covering a variety of topics — such as health, safety, math, and geography— and have earned awards in several regional and national programming and robotics competitions.

Simon Pile
As the Assistant Headteacher and Leader of Computing, Simon Pile has been shaping the technology journey at the Anson Primary School in London since 2001. He believes technology should be in every class and help empower staff to deliver an innovative curriculum.
He found Apple products to deliver on the the heart of the school’s broad technology vision, where creativity is crucial to engaging students. Through video, GarageBand, Keynote animations, and a variety of interactive content on iPad, students are now active creators of content. “iPad allows me to create a curriculum, that is engaging and relevant, to give every student a voice,” says Simon. “It gives students the opportunity to have a personalized learning journey that is packed with creative opportunities.”
Simon has always made it his mission to share what he is doing in the classroom, to give the students’ work a platform and ensure that other children and teachers will benefit from the ideas and the successes he has had. Simon has published over 35 books on Apple Books in an effort to help other teachers use technology in a meaningful way. He also leads regular courses on Augmented Reality (AR), Mobile Filmmaking, iPad in Education, and Creativity in the Classroom. Simon has a strong belief in harnessing the power of technology to extend learning beyond the classroom for teachers and students, and also leads by example through his extensive body of work.
