Question: Q: Can i use the 27″ thunderbolt monitor on my HP windows 7 PC ?

I would like to purchase the Thunderbolt 27″ display and use it for my HP windows 7 pro desktop PC. (a) Is this possible?, (b) do I need any specialized cables?, (c) do I need any specialized graphics card?. Any help and or direction would be greatly appreciated. —

You need a Thunderbolt port and I doubt your PC has one.

so then i assume a «displayport» will not work with the thunderbolt?

I’ve got a Thunderbolt Display. Its a massive convenience.

It can be used with any graphics card that has a mini-displayport (some ATI cards have them, plus there are dongles to go from full-sized displayport to mini-displayport, but I’m not sure about HDMI/DVI-to-mDP adapters)

When you plug the Thunderbolt display into a mini-displayport of a PC, it acts just like every other screen that is on the market. But NONE of the usbs, mic, camera, ethernet or speakers will work, as they require a Thunderbolt connection.

Hope this helps.

BTW, the Thunderbolt display only has usb2 ports, this may not be an issue with older macs, like mine. But if I had usb3 on my mac, I’d want usb3 on the display too. Maybe sit tight for a couple of months and see what apple has in store for us (should get slimmer and get usb3 at some point, a là iMac)

Thank you very much for this info. I am crossed between the Dell Ultrasharp and the Apple 27 TBD. I really like the apple better and have plans to migrate from PC to mac in the future. I have read some very conflicting info that it will NOT work with a ‘PC’ vs it will work but some proprietary functions associated to Thunderbolt will not work.

My focus is to have the monitor function at the specified resolution driven from the windows 7 PC and the display work properly . I can do without the mic, camera and usb ports for now.

Any additional advice and or direction would be greatly appreciated. —thanks again..

This is exactly what I need know but I haven’t found any positive answer on google or youtube, only this post. I don’t care about camera, usb or speakers, at least not now.I just need the display function of the display.

Most people disagree that Thunderbolt Display will turn on, on mini DisplayPort source except you and a local Apple store employe.

So can anybody else confirm this? Will apple thunderbolt screen act as any other display port screen if plugged on a pc Gpu with mini display port or full size display port + dongle to mini dp?

In trying to connect the HDMI out of a PC laptop to drive an Apple cinema display (27″) with a Thunderbolt connector input, I found this solution:

This takes the HDMI out from your PC (and also USB out) and converts it to a female «DisplayPort» connector

Then you also need a:

— StarTech.com DP2MDPMF6IN 6in DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Video Cable Adapter — M/F

This takes the «DisplayPort» female connector (from the first adaptor) and provides a Mini-DisplayPort female plug that the monitor’s Thunderbolt connector can plug into (the Thunderbolt connector and the Mini DisplayPort connector are physically the same, though the Thunderbolt standard has features the DisplayPort may not have, like sound, data and power switching)

One reviewer on amazon said this worked—including powering up the display at full max resolution of the Apple display—so I have mine on order. About $55 for the two adaptors. I suspect that depending on the graphics card in the PC, the HDMI out may or may not drive the the full capability of the Apple Display—but it seems this adaptor solution would not be the constraint as its spec’d to drive up to a 4K monitor.

I’m not a StarTech guy, but its the only solution I was able to find.

What is Thunderbolt?

Thunderbolt is an input/output technology introduced five years ago by Apple, famous for supporting high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices with a single port.

Its main characteristics are flexibility, speed and simplicity. This technology gives you two channels on the same connector and each channel has a data transfer speed of 10 Gb/s in both directions.

Thunderbolt is one method of connecting a display to a computer, but not a very popular one. The most appreciated are HDMI, DVI, VGA and DisplayPort.

Today, most of the VGA and DVI ports were replaced with DisplayPort. HDMI is used for flat screen TVs and smart TVs because you can connect that port to different extensions like Blu-Ray players, game consoles, computers and much more.

The original project was patented by Intel under the name of Light Peak. The first version of this technology appeared in 2010 but was more like a beta.

The following year, Intel released the product co-developed version with Apple. PC manufacturers rejected the Light Peak version because its fiber optics technology was too expensive and the Thunderbolt version seemed like a more profitable option.

One problem with Thunderbolt monitors is that they have a specific connector for Apple devices. A Thunderbolt screen should work on any PC that has a Thunderbolt port, but many of you wouldn’t buy one without a guarantee it would work.

And while Thunderbolt 3 has adopted a new USB Type-C port, this port is not compatible with any kind of PC.

Set-up guide for Thunderbolt 3

1. In the notification window, you have two buttons: OK and Cancel. To start the set-up click on the OK button and it will run the configuration as an administrator.
2. After this, you may receive a Windows User Account Control (UAC) pop-up which is asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your PC. Click on Yes button.
3. It will appear a window where you will approve the Thunderbolt device that was attached. For every device, there is a table. From that table, change the status from Do Not Connect to Always Connect and then click OK.
4. To view and manage the approved settings, click on the carret (up arrow icon) from the start menu bar. Right click on the Thunderbolt icon and click on the Manage Approved Devices.
5. Again, you may receive a Windows User Account Control (UAC) pop-up which is asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your PC. Click on Yes button.
6. After clicking Yes, it will open a window with all the Thunderbolt devices connected to your PC. Make sure that the devices have a check at Attached category.
