Set up your Apple TV

To get started with your Apple TV, follow these steps.

Here’s what you need

  • Personal Internet*
  • A TV or other display with an HDMI port
  • An HDMI cable (On Apple TV 4K, you need an HDMI 2.0 or later compatible cable)

If you want to set up your Apple TV with your iOS device, do these things first on your iOS device:

*Apple TV doesn’t support public or subscription networks with sign-in requirements.

Choose your Apple TV

Set up your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD

To go back to a previous screen during setup, press the Menu button on your remote. To start over, unplug your Apple TV from power, then plug it back in.

Plug it in and turn on your TV

Plug your Apple TV into power and connect it to your TV with an HDMI cable. To watch movies in 4K HDR on Apple TV 4K, make sure that you’re using an HDMI 2.0 or later cable, and have a TV that supports 4K, HDR, or both. Then turn on your TV and select the HDMI input that your Apple TV is connected to.

If you don’t want to connect to Wi-Fi during setup, you can connect your Apple TV to your router with an Ethernet cable.

Choose your language, and turn on Siri

Swipe on the Touch surface of your Apple TV Remote to find your language and country or region. To choose an option, click the Touch surface. If you choose the wrong language, press the Menu button to return to the previous screen.

If asked, choose whether to use Siri.

Continue setup with your iOS device or set up manually

To automatically add your Apple ID and Wi-Fi settings to your Apple TV, choose Set Up with Device. Then unlock your iOS device, hold it next to your Apple TV, and follow the onscreen steps on your iOS device and Apple TV.

If you don’t want to set up your Apple TV with your iOS device, choose Set Up Manually. Then follow the onscreen steps on your Apple TV to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and sign in with your Apple ID.

If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one. If you forgot your Apple ID, learn what to do.

If you can’t watch or stream movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app

If you have trouble streaming, watching, or starting a movie or TV show that you purchased over a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, try the steps below. After each step, see if you can play the video.

Update to the latest version of the Apple TV app

If you’re using a compatible smart TV, streaming device, or gaming console that’s connected to the internet, the Apple TV app should update automatically. If you need help, you can contact the manufacturer or learn how to get the Apple TV app on your device.

If the movie or TV show won’t start playing

After each step, try to stream or download the movie or TV show again.

  1. Check the System Status page for service interruptions or check a third-party provider’s website for any interruptions. If there are service interruptions, try to stream or watch the video later.
  2. If you’re having trouble logging in with your Apple ID, you can reset your Apple ID password or learn how to get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication.
  3. If your cellular connection is poor, connect to Wi-Fi instead.*
  4. Try watching on a different device using the same Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If it doesn’t work, contact your internet service provider to see if there’s an issue with your network.
  5. If other people are using Apple TV+ or Apple TV channels, make sure it doesn’t exceed the limits for streaming on multiple devices.

* Make sure that your Wi-Fi router is 802.11a/g/n/ac compatible. Streaming HD content requires 8 Mbit/s or faster. Slower tiers of Wi-Fi connections might not be fast enough to stream HD video content.

If the video quality is bad or it stops playing

  1. If multiple people on your network are using the internet, your connection speed might slow down. Ask them to temporarily pause their internet activities.
  2. Restart your Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. If you’re using a smart TV or streaming device, turn it off and back on again.
  3. Tap or click the download icon to try downloading the movie or TV show instead.*

* You can’t download movies or TV shows to Apple TV, smart TVs, or streaming devices. You can only download HDR content on certain iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models, and you can’t download 4K video content to any device.

Still need help?

If you still can’t play movies or TV shows, you can go to reportaproblem.apple.com and request a refund after you log in with your Apple ID and password.

If you’re having problems streaming movies or TV shows in apps that you downloaded from the App Store, you can contact the app developer.

Ratings and Reviews

Little lost gem!

I used this app years ago and even forgot I had it installed. And then came on a use case I’ve wanted for years — and this does it! Beautifully.
Among other things, I use Remote to control the music playing on my main Mac through AirPlay to my main entertainment system. Now I can listen to the same stream in the office, family room, and outside and am free to roam about the yard without worrying about WiFi dropping out. And I still have complete control over what is playing (and volume and more) from my iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch! Can’t wait to pair some friends phones so my Mac can serve as a jukebox at the next party! I’ve always wanted to do that!
The only thing I wish it did that it doesn’t do is allow me to Add to my library! (I think I get why and it’s not too much to go over to Music and do it and then come back.)
Well done Apple.

Edited, working fantastically

After this latest update and MacOS update, working swimmingly. I love that my whole house AirPlay Setup works as designed once again!

Old rating: Had I known about the iTunes remote breaking when this Catalina upgrade came about, it would have been a deal breaker. I’ve had this app for years and used it regularly to stream music to all my airplay speakers. Worked wonderfully.

I put Catalina on my mac, and it’s broken. Apple would be wise to fix, with all the issues with the iOS and macOS, which they absurdly and uncharacteristically botched, and the anger in the community over this among other “losses”, which outweigh the “enhancements”. Apple, you were better than this.

Missing key feature

This is one of the most used apps I have on my IOS devices, using it to control a headless Mac mini music server. There are no iTunes alternatives available I’m aware off, as such it is important to me that it continues to remain relevant. For the most part it works flawlessly with a local music library, what it doesn’t do is quite astonishing, it doesn’t allow selecting music from Apple Music. If I choose an album or song in Apple Music using Remote Desktop from a Mac and then start iTunes Remote on iPad it appears in now playing and functions normally so it seems feasible. Please Apple update this app with Apple Music functionality, don’t make me email Tim Cook over such an obvious shortcoming.

Updated: Apple is rolling out lossless HiRez Apple Music soon, yet this their only remote app for controlling the Music App still cannot see any of the Apple Music streaming stuff. While Roon and Audirvana’s remote apps can do just that with their apps controlling HiRez streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal.
