How to Unlock Verizon iPhone in 2020
The cellular industry in the US made a radical shift in 2014 when the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act became law. Among other things, this consumer-friendly piece of legislation required carriers to unlock all eligible devices upon consumer request. Want to find out if your iPhone is unlocked? And how to unlock it if it is? Read on for the information on unlocking your iPhone on Verizon’s network in 2020.
Is my iPhone locked to my wireless carrier?
If you purchased a new iPhone in the past few years from Verizon, then we have some good news for you — your device is not locked to your carrier. Starting with the iPhone 5, Apple began shipping their phones with a universal GSM/CDMA/LTE cellular radio that supports all the US and most international carriers. At the same time, Verizon began shipping all their 4G phones in an unlocked state. To switch from Verizon to another provider, you just need to swap out the SIM cards and restart your phone for those changes to take effect. If you have an older Verizon iPhone or purchased your iPhone from another carrier, your device may be locked to your carrier, and you will need to contact them to unlock your phone.
If you are not sure, you can check if your phone is unlocked by contacting your carrier directly or by using a third-party service.
How do I Unlock Verizon iPhone?
The unlocking process varies from carrier to carrier and often requires you to meet some minimal eligibility criteria, such as having all your financial commitments for the phone and your service paid in full. The unlocking policies also are different for postpaid customers with a monthly bill and prepaid customers who pay as they go. One the thing to keep in mind — you will want to unlock your phone while your account is active as carriers are hesitant to unlock a phone for someone who does not have service with them. Below you will find links to each carrier’s unlocking policy and some general guidelines on unlocking your iPhone if it is locked.
Do I Need to Unlock Verizon iPhone?
Since the iPhone 5, Verizon iPhones have been sold unlocked, allowing you to move them to another carrier with no intervention. Older iPhones may be locked and may require you to contact Verizon if you want to use them on another carrier. Unlocking the phone is painless, just call Customer Service (800-711-8300) and ask for a SIM unlock. Verizon’s unlocking policy details are available here.
If you learn that you’re not eligible for an official carrier unlock or your iPhone is locked with another carrier not mentioned above, then you can opt for an IMEI unlock. It works just like the official carrier unlock, which means it’s permanent, works with all models and OS versions, persists even after a restore, and doesn’t require you a jailbreak or any other hacks.
There are a lot of IMEI unlock providers, but it’s best to go with trusted providers like Express Unlocks, as there are a lot of scammers out there. The price to unlock iPhone varies based on your carrier. They support all iPhone models such as iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4.

If you buy the TMobile version it will be locked to TMobile even if you pay full price. TMobile can unlock it but if you do not have an account with the carrier, the standard unlock policy would not apply.
Verizon is a different case. As a result of an agreement with the FCC all Verizon LTE devices are unlocked. If bought at a US retailer rather than the Apple Store or Apple.com the Verizon model is subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and will lock to the first carrier on which it is activated.
For immediate international use, the sim free model from the Apple Store (if indeed a sim free version is offered) would be the best choice.
Verizon would be the next best alternative.
All carrier-branded phones are specifically intended for initial activation on that carrier. Alternative initial activations are subject to risks that can lead to unintended consequences.

ok. I understood the first part! but this means that once I activate my iPhone with Verizon I will not be able to unlock the phone even after having paid it completely ?

At this time you will not be able to buy a Verizon iPhone unless you currently have service from them even if you are paying full price. The T-Mobile phone is not locked and it does not require current service so that is your only option.

No, it means if you buy a phone from someplace like Best Buy, it will lock to the first provider you use.
Phones purchased directly from Verizon are unlocked. However as deggie notes, Verizon won’t sell you a phone without activation.

Basically im buying the Verizon phone using Apple iPhone upgrade program. one of the things apple said about this program was that you are getting an unlock phone, and you can use it with any phone service company.
So, if I have current service with Verizon, the iPhone version for Verizon will be unlock?

The GSM side of Verizon iPhone’s are not locked per an agreement they have with the FCC.

Sweet! that is the answer . thank you very much.
as a business traveler I will need a unlock phone with the GSM side not locked, just like you said. so, now everything is clear for me.
I don’t know why things are not clear when yo talk to the guys from Verizon. they answer in circles, with out give you the right information. that is why I found apple iPhone upgrade program more attractive.
Thank you very much again.

Understand, that as a business traveler, and I’m guessing that you are referring to traveling internationally, different versions of the phone support different cellular bands, and may not support all of the cellular bands in different countries. Also, you will need to return to the US for warranty service. But I still believe if you make the purchase with the AUP, you need to be a current Verizon customer if that is the one you are going to pick. An actual unlocked SIM-free version has not been announced yet for the iPhone X.

Im a Verizon customer, And I bought the Verizon iPhone X through the Apple upgrade programa..
Oct 28, 2017 10:43 AM
Thank you for that information, but much of my information still holds true for support of other country’s cellular bands. Good luck with your device.

I’m afraid that you are incorrect. If you pay full price for a T-Mobile phone from apple.com, it’s fully unlocked and can be used with any compatible carrier. I have purchased them myself several times straight from Apple, including the iPhone X, and they are indeed fully unlocked. The only T-Mobile phones that are locked are ones that you buy directly from T-Mobile.

I second this. A T-Mobile iPhone (including the iPhone X) purchased from Apple.com at full price (meaning no payment plans and no T-Mobile account info being given) arrives fully unlocked.
Essentially, the T-Mobile version is the current «SIM Free» GSM version until the official one is released. The only difference is that it arrives with a T-Mobile SIM pre-inserted.
That being said, in the current absence of a SIM Free version, one would be well advised to choose the Verizon version as it has all the same LTE bands as the GSM only version but also supports CDMA (in the case you would ever need that in the USA).
Regardless, if GSM is all you need, iPhone X model A1901 is your friend..

«If bought at a US retailer rather than the Apple Store or Apple.com the Verizon model is subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and will lock to the first carrier on which it is activated.»
By saying this, do you mean if I purchased the phone directly from Apple.com, it’s not subject to the US Resellers Flex Policy and no matter which carrier’s SIM I put into the phone for activation, it won’t be locked to that specific carrier?
Reason I’m asking is that I have a Verizon iPhone X on the way shipped by Apple, and I chose the «Activate later with your carrier» option when I placed the order. Becoz I use AT&T here in the US but I am also an international traveller thus I need CDMA capacity. When I receive the phone, can I use my current AT&T SIM to activate? Will it be locked to AT&T which then prevents me from using other SIM? Also will I be able to activate the phone using a foreign SIM?
I know the best way for activation would be using a Verizon SIM in order to prevent be locked, but to do that I’d need to bother one of my coworkers who uses Verizon.

If I understand you correctly you have availed of the recent change in policy on Apple.com for the iPhone X and want to know how it will work in terms of simulating buying a sim-free version of the iPhone X if such a model actually existed.
To use the famous saying, «predictions are hard especially about the future.»😀
That being said:
1) it should work as you intend if you activate it with your AT&T sim
2) there are reports (Howard Forums, if I recall correctly) that it has already been done
3) you can test it yourself easily. After activation with the AT&T sim, simply insert a Verizon, TMobile or international sim (Truphone for instance) and see if it works. You can also test it on Sprint but there are additional hoops to jump through to do that. If any of these tests fails to meet your expectations, you have 14 days to return the phone.
