Track your sleep with Apple Watch

With the Sleep app on Apple Watch, you can create bedtime schedules to help you meet your sleep goals. Wear your watch to bed, and Apple Watch can track your sleep. When you wake up, open the Sleep app to learn how much sleep you got and see your sleep trends over the past 14 days.

If your Apple Watch is charged less than 30 percent before you go to bed, you’re prompted to charge it. In the morning, just glance at the greeting to see how much charge remains.

You can create multiple schedules—for example, one for weekdays and another for weekends. For each schedule, you can set up the following:

A sleep goal (how many hours of sleep you want to get)

What time you want to go to bed and wake up

An alarm sound to wake you up

When to turn on sleep mode, which limits distractions before you go to bed and protects your sleep after you’re in bed

Sleep tracking, which uses your motion to detect sleep when Apple Watch is in sleep mode and worn to bed

Tip: To exit sleep mode, first turn the Digital Crown to unlock. Then swipe up to open Control Center and tap .

Set up Sleep on Apple Watch

Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.

Follow the onscreen instructions.

You can also open the Health app on iPhone, tap Browse, tap Sleep, then tap Get Started (under Set Up Sleep).

Change or turn off your next wake-up alarm

Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.

Tap your current bedtime.

To set a new wake-up time, tap the wake-up time, turn the Digital Crown to set a new time, then tap .

If you don’t want your Apple Watch to wake you in the morning, turn off Alarm.

The changes apply only to your next wake-up alarm, after which your normal schedule resumes.

Note: You can also turn off the next wake-up alarm in the Alarms app . Just tap the alarm that appears under Sleep | Wake up, then tap Skip for Tonight.

Change or add a sleep schedule

Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.

Tap Full Schedule, then do one of the following:

Change a sleep schedule: Tap the current schedule.

Add a sleep schedule: Tap Add Schedule.

Change your sleep goal: Tap Sleep Goal, then set the amount of time you want to sleep.

Change Wind Down time: Tap Wind Down, then set the amount of time you want sleep mode to be active before bedtime.

To reduce distractions before your scheduled bedtime, sleep mode turns on during Wind Down. Sleep mode turns off the watch display and turns on Do Not Disturb.

Do any of the following:

Set the days for your schedule: Tap your schedule, then tap the area below Active On. Choose days, then tap Done.

Adjust your wake time and bedtime: Tap Wake Up or Bedtime, turn the Digital Crown to set a new time, then tap Set.

Set the alarm options: Turn Alarm off or on and tap Sound to choose an alarm sound.

Remove or cancel a sleep schedule: Tap Delete Schedule (at the bottom of the screen) to remove an existing schedule, or tap Cancel (at the top of the screen) to cancel creating a new one.

Change sleep options

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

Tap Sleep, then tap Sleep Focus to adjust these settings:

Turn On at Wind Down: By default, Sleep Focus begins at the wind down time you set in the Sleep app. If you’d prefer to control Sleep Focus manually in Control Center, turn this option off.

Sleep Screen: Your Apple Watch display and iPhone Lock Screen are simplified to reduce distractions.

Show time: Show the date and time on your iPhone and Apple Watch during sleep mode.

Turn Sleep Tracking and Charging Reminders on or off.

When Sleep Tracking is on, your Apple Watch tracks your sleep and adds sleep data to the Health app on your iPhone.

Turn on Charging Reminders to have your Apple Watch remind you to charge your watch before your wind down time and notify you when your watch is fully charged.

You can also change these and other sleep options on your iPhone. Open the Health app on iPhone, tap Browse, then go to Sleep > Options.

View your recent sleep history

Open the Sleep app on your Apple Watch.

Scroll down to see the amount of sleep you got the night before and your sleep average over the last 14 days.

To see your sleep history on iPhone, open the Health app on iPhone, tap Browse, then tap Sleep.

Review your sleeping respiratory rate

In watchOS 8, your Apple Watch can track your breathing rate as you sleep, which can give you greater insight into your overall health. After wearing your watch to bed, follow these steps:

Open the Health app on your iPhone, tap Browse, then tap Respiratory.

Tap Respiratory Rate, then tap Show More Respiratory Rate Data.

The Sleep entry shows the range of your respiratory rate as you’ve slept.

Turn on and wake Apple Watch

Turn your Apple Watch on and off

Turn on: If your Apple Watch is off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears (you might see a black screen for a short time first).

The watch face appears when Apple Watch is on.

Turn off: Normally, you’ll leave your Apple Watch on all of the time, but if you need to turn it off, press and hold the side button until the sliders appear, then drag the Power Off slider to the right.

Tip: You can’t turn off your Apple Watch while it’s charging. To turn off your Apple Watch, first disconnect it from the charger.

Always On (Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and later only)

Always On lets Apple Watch display the watch face and time, even when your wrist is down. When you raise your wrist, Apple Watch functions fully.

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

Tap Display & Brightness, then tap Always On.

Turn on Always On, then tap the following options to configure them:

Show Complication Data: Choose the complications that show data when your wrist is down.

Show Notifications: Choose the notifications that are visible when your wrist is down.

Show Apps: Choose the apps that are visible when your wrist is down.

Wake the Apple Watch display

By default, you can wake the Apple Watch display in these ways:

Raise your wrist. Your Apple Watch sleeps again when you lower your wrist.

Tap the display or press the Digital Crown.

Turn the Digital Crown upward.

If you don’t want your Apple Watch to wake when you raise your wrist or turn the Digital Crown, open the Settings app on your Apple Watch, go to Display & Brightness, then configure Wake on Wrist Raise and Raise On Crown Up.

Tip: To temporarily prevent your Apple Watch from waking when you raise your wrist, use theater mode.

If your Apple Watch doesn’t wake when you raise your wrist, make sure you selected the proper wrist and watch orientation. If your Apple Watch doesn’t wake when you tap the display or press or turn the Digital Crown, it may need charging.

Return to the clock face

You can choose how long before Apple Watch returns to the clock face from an open app.

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

Go to General > Return to Clock, then scroll down and choose when you want your Apple Watch to return to the clock face: Always, After 2 minutes, or After 1 hour.

You can also return to the clock face by pressing the Digital Crown.

By default, the setting you select applies to all apps, but you can choose a custom time for each app. To do so, tap an app on this screen, tap Custom, then choose a setting.

Wake to your last activity

For some apps, you can set Apple Watch to return you to where you were before it went to sleep. These apps include Audiobooks, Maps, Mindfulness, Music, Now Playing, Podcasts, Stopwatch, Timers, Voice Memos, Walkie-Talkie, and Workout.

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

Go to General > Return to Clock, scroll down and tap an app, then turn on Return to App.

To return to the clock face, just stop what you’re doing in the app—for example, stop a podcast, end a route in Maps, or cancel a timer.

You can also open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, then go to General > Return to Clock.

Keep the Apple Watch display on longer

You can keep the display on longer when you tap to wake your Apple Watch.

Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.

Tap Display & Brightness, tap Wake Duration, then tap Wake for 70 Seconds.
