Apple Will Give You $1 Million to Hack an iPhone

Apple is offering hackers up to $1 million to hack into their iPhones and tell the company how they did it.
The bounty, which was announced by the iPhone-maker at the annual Black Hat hacker convention in Las Vegas on Thursday, is the company’s biggest ever — in fact, it’s five times bigger than its previous largest payout.
In the past, Apple limited its bug bounty program to a restricted list of friendly hackers, but it has now opened up the reward to everyone. It will only pay out the top prize for a very specific hack: Hackers will have to show that they can gain remote access to the very core of Apple’s iOS software without needing the target, the phone’s user, to take any action.
Bug bounty programs, in which companies invite hackers to find vulnerabilities in their systems, have become increasingly popular in recent years as a way of preventing criminals from finding and exploiting those flaws first.
Such vulnerabilities in the world’s most popular smartphone are highly prized on the vulnerability market, and Apple’s $1 million reward is in line with what hackers would likely be paid for uncovering such a bug.
Private companies such as Israel’s secretive cybersecurity company NSO Group, as well as government agencies, have paid as much as $2 million for a tool that can remotely access an iPhone.
Repressive governments have been increasingly eager to find ways of monitoring the digital lives of dissidents, journalists and political opponents. In recent years, a lucrative grey market dominated by shadowy companies selling tools to do just that has exploded, and Apple’s new $1 million bounty is a way of preventing those tools from falling into the wrong hands.
It has been reported that Saudi dissidents living abroad, including well-known YouTube comic and satirist Ghanem Almasarir, were targeted with an iPhone spying tool created by NSO Group prior to the brutal torture and murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Recently, a group of hackers working for Google’s Project Zero program uncovered a cache of flaws in Apple’s software, which would allow hackers to gain access to your phone simply by sending you a message.
But the Google hackers quietly shared the details with Apple, which fixed the flaws before the the details were made public, which would allow hacker to take advantage of them.

Apple will give you $10 to trade in your fake & possibly deadly iPhone charger

If you’re powering your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with a counterfeit charger, Apple wants to give you money to trade it in.
The company has launched a USB power adapter trade-in program, which it hopes will encourage owners of its devices to go legit. Under the program, which runs until October 18, Apple will slice $10 off the cost of a legitimate charger if customers trade in any they suspect of being faulty or fake.
Above: This is what a real iPhone 4 power adapter looks like, kids.
While Apple doesn’t mention it outright, the program appears to be largely in response to the recent electrocutions of two people in China — both of which were allegedly caused by faulty third-party chargers. Apple, in an effort to save your skin or maybe just its own, wants to make sure that never happens again.
“Customer safety is a top priority at Apple. That’s why all of our products — including USB power adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod — undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to meet government safety standards around the world,” the company says.
What’s interesting is even Apple admits that it’s not immediately obvious when its dealing with fake chargers.
“Due to the complexity of testing required to detect an unsafe or counterfeit adapter, Apple Retail and Apple Authorized Service Providers cannot advise you on the authenticity or safety of your adapter,” the company says.
If counterfeiters are getting so good that not even Apple can easily identify their handiwork, then perhaps we’re all in deeper trouble than we thought.

Apple is solving a complicated problem with its latest iOS update: right of survivorship. Until now, when a loved one or family member dies, there was no easy way to access their iCloud account and absolutely no way of unlocking their phone without knowing their passcode. According to the iCloud terms of service, the deceased person’s data goes with them even with a death certificate.
With the new Digital Legacy program, first announced at WWDC earlier this year and arriving in iOS 15.2, you can designate up to five people as Legacy Contacts. These individuals can then access your data and personal information stored in iCloud when you die, such as photos, documents, and even purchases.
To activate Digital Legacy, Apple still requires proof of death and an access key. Still, it’s a much more simplified process than before, which could require a court order confirming a right to inheritance, and even then, there was no guarantee you would get access to the data.
This has been a complicated situation for Apple, which has long touted its core principles of protecting users’ privacy. Grieving parents and spouses railing against the company for not giving them access to their spouses’ photos isn’t a good look. But neither is doling out people’s data willy-nilly.
Both Google and Facebook have systems in place for designating account access to other people, and it’s good to see Apple catching up here.

How to set up a Legacy Contact
(note you need to be running iOS 15.2 to access this feature)
- On an iOS device, go to Settings > [your name] > Password & Security.
- On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Apple ID > Password & Security.
- Under Legacy Contact, follow the instructions to add a Legacy Contact. If you use Family Sharing, you can choose a family member from the list; alternatively, add someone using their email or phone number.
- Notify your Legacy Contact and share an access key via Messages. If they accept, a copy of the access key is automatically stored in their Apple ID settings. If they decline, you will receive a notification. The access key is required to get into your account if you pass away.
- While you can add a Legacy Contact who isn’t on iOS 15.2, they won’t be able to store the access key in the settings on their device, so you should provide it to them in another way.
Legacy Contact is part of the Digital Legacy program and is available now in the public beta version of iOS 15.2 for iPhone. It will be broadly accessible when iOS 15.2 fully launches. Apple hasn’t said which version of macOS will support the feature.
