Apple wireless keyboard windows ctrl alt delete

Question: Q: Apple Wireless Keyboard — ctrl-alt-del in XP?

Has anybody had any luck with ctrl-alt-del functionality using the new Apple Wireless Keyboard in boot camp on Windows XP Pro? I’ve been playing with this all day and I can’t get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here’s what I did to get my keyboard working with Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Workaround for missing keys:
I prefer to have no background applications for remapping keys. Three Keys that I have remapped are:

1) Delete Key
This is essential if you want to depress Ctrl-Alt-Del to lock or access the task manager of your XP workstation! The delete key in an Apple Keyboard is actually the Windows Backspace Key. The two Apple Command Keys are equivalent to the Windows Key. I never use the Windows key, hence I remapped the Left Command Key to the Windows Delete Equivalent. I now can easily Lock my workstation Ctrl-Alt-Del in a very quick motion with three fingers on one hand.

2) Page Up / Pg Down. I remapped F12 and F11 to a Page Up and Page down respectively. These keys are a must for me in my daily Work routine for Office Applications.

I highly recommend Sharpkeys to make the remap. Keytweak is something more graphical, but does the same job. The neat thing about these two tools are they are not memory resident. These involve registry changes to WinXP upon a userlogin, hence no apps resting in the systray to get them to work.

Help: I’m unable to remap the Eject Key, Windows can’t seen to read the scancodes on that key via sharpkeys or keytweak. If you manage to have a solution, drop me a note. I’d love to program that key as a hotkey to turn off my monitor or run a script.

MBDaines: I had the same problem as using using the DBT-120 and Apple Wireless Keyboard under Windows. The keyboard would get «stuck» all the type repeating the character (like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA) and only a reboot would stop it. The keyboard would also continuously drop its connection after using Windows for only a few minutes.

The trick is to uninstall the Bluetooth drivers that come with the DBT-120 (it’s the Toshiba stack) and let Windows XP install its own Bluetooth drivers (you need at least Service Pack 2). Just uninstall the Bluetooth drivers from Control Panel->Add Remove Programs, reboot, and let Windows pick up the DBT-120 on its own. You’ll need to pair the keyboard with Windows again and set the properties for HID drivers in the Bluetooth settings for the Apple Keyboard. The Toshiba drivers are horrible and seem to cause a lot of problems with the Apple Keyboard.

As for sending CTRL-ALT-DEL in Windows, I found a great utility from Japan called «Apple Wireless Keyboard Helper for Windows». It’s available here:

You need to play with the default script in order to get CTRL-ALT-DEL mapped, but out of the box it does some great mappings like fn-Delete doing an actual delete the volume keys, etc. Everyone with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Windows should check it out. I’ll try mapping CTRL-ALT-DEL and posting the script if I can get it working.

Question: Q: Ctrl Alt Del on magic keyboard

For work I’m using a PC, i.e. Windows. I bought the Magic Keyboard to use with that PC. Have been able to connect and they keyboard works nicely, as long as I have logged in with the old windows keyboard. Can’t find a way to log on with the magic keyboard.

So question is — how can I enter that increadibly vital Ctrl+Alt+Del command with the magic keyboard?

Thank you very much, the solution was found!! It’s not the one you suggested but the on-screen keyboard helped me solve the puzzle.

For me the combination of Option + Control +

For the on-screen keyboard, I can get it visible with Ctrl+Cmd+O but only when being logged on, not being able to get anything happening in log-in screen.

Thanks a lot for you friendly advice 👍

Try Fn+Control+Option+Delete. Another approach is to enable the on-screen-keyboard.

Fn+Control+Option+Delete — does not work

On-screen-keyboard — how can you use one at Windows log-in?

Aug 19, 2021 11:10 AM

There should be an accessibility or Ease Of Access icon somewhere.

Aug 19, 2021 11:47 AM

There is absolutely nothing to click on with the mouse 🤔 Right click gives nothing.

Can it be that corporate settings are complicating things? I have never used a Windows PC privately, maybe there are more options on a “normal” log-in screen…?

Aug 19, 2021 10:44 PM

Yes, it is possible that custom settings have been used to suppress the ease of access button. See https://www.zubairalexander.com/blog/remove-ease-of-access-button-in-windows-10/ for example.

Ctrl+Cmd+O should turn the On-Screen Keyboard on or off. I’m currently connected to a Windows 10 desktop remotely from a Mac and can bring up the keyboard. I can then hold Ctrl+Alt on my Magic Keyboard and click Del on the On Screen Keyboard and I get the standard options to lock the computer, run task manager, etc.

Question: Q: Ctrl-Alt-Del on Apple wireless keyboard.

I recently moved job and was forced in to a Mac > PC change. 😢

I have managed to link up my Apple wireless keyboard via bluetooth to my new work machine. However, I have not yet figured out the equivalent key combination on the keyboard for Ctrl-Alt-Del to unlock my screen

Does anyone have a work around or a solution that they could share?

I have tried looking at the setting on the PC but can’t find anything. (What a shock I know)

Any help would be much appreciated because I am currently typing from a doorstop of a Dell keyboard. 😠

In most cases, on a Mac keyboard is the same as on a PC keyboard. If that is true for you, then should give you the desired key combination.

This does not work (Fn+Ctrl+Alt+del)

I got this to work by pressing keys in the exact order: then then . Hope that helps clarify. Thanks for posting and replying, everyone!

I’m using a native windows machine (does not have OS X and is not an apple computer). Drivers, such as bootcamp or otherwise, will work once the user is logged in. But once the user logs out or the screensaver login kicks in, the drivers appear to be disabled.

Sorry to say, but I don’t think you can do what you want with the wireless keyboard. I run XP and WIN 7 in Parallels on my Mac, and I had to switch back to using Apple’s wired keyboard because I was never able to log in using the wireless model.

Easiest way is to locate task manager (see above location)and create a shortcut on your desktop. Right click and Select Create Shortcut — then drag it to the desktop.

I am happy to get rid of the oversized keyboards sold by PC vendors for a small form factor such as Apple’s wireless keyboard.

By the way; if you are using a 64 bit system, then change location from System32 to System64

Apr 30, 2012 7:41 AM

How does making a desktop shortcut to the taskmgr program help with logging in? At the log in screen, you do not have access to your desktop.

Apr 30, 2012 8:00 AM

you are right.. I’m sorry,, thought this was a Control Alt DeL thread.

If you are using a Mac type computer or laptop — the drivers will be install through BootCamp and updated by using Boot Camp in PC mode.

I’m testing the keyboard native on my Toshiba and I see there is a problem after sleep that the laptop does not recognize the keyboard and there is no way to use a password if required. That is a Driver issue and I will try to find the keyboard driver for windows and repost.

Apr 30, 2012 10:13 AM

Solution — hope it works for you.

It seems the keyboard only remembers one device at a time and that is the very first Paired computer used when you set up your keyboard. If you set up the keyboard with a Mac, iPad, or another PC — then you must first disconnect (UnPair) the keyboard from the first device and then delete the device from the current computer you are using. The keyboard can be used with many devices temporarily (this is your case), it can only be used with one device as a permanently.

Now start over and connect device (Pair) in windows using Custom rather than Express — type in the «key» provided by windows and create a shortcut on your desktop (for later) and that should do it.

I did notice that after restart, windows takes a few moments to switch on Bluetooth before it’s ready to allow the keyboard to be used during «Password Login»- tap a key on the keyboard wait about 5 to 10. That’s it.

Excellent, good answer. You solved my trouble. I have only one note: I’m running Windows 7 64 bit, but the right link requires system32, not system64

May 25, 2012 6:10 AM

Just found a great work around. Click the «»Ease of Access», then «Type without the keyboard (On-Screen Keyboard)», hold down alt-control then click Delete then login.

Jun 2, 2012 3:50 PM

This solution does not solve the original poster’s problem (nor mine). The bluetooth keyboard is paired to only one computer, namely a native windows machine and not a mac running windows with bootcamp. While logged into a windows account, the bluetooth keyboard works wonderfully. It is only when the user is logged out and a login is required that problems occur.

As you stated above, «The keyboard can be used with many devices temporarily (this is your case).» However, this is not our case. Remember what the original poster stated, «I recently moved job and was forced in to a Mac > PC change.» We are on native windows computers and are trying to use mac products, such as the wireless bluetooth keyboard.

If you know of a way to keep the apple wireless keyboard windows drivers resident in memory after the user logs out of their account, so that the ctrl+alt+del or fn+ctrl+alt+del works to initiate the login screen, please let us know.

Yeah this is a temporary workaround that has been known for a while. Thanks for sharing here for people that don’t know already. Without the virtual keyboard, the apple wireless keyboard would be completely useless on the PC.

Jun 12, 2012 7:05 AM

I am running Lion on Macbook Pro with 22″ external screen and wireless keyboard.

Inside I have Virtual Box with Windows XP that I used locally just fine but when I needed to start using it as a part of AD through VPN, couldn’t get Ctrl+Alt Del combo for login.

I looked at this thread which gave me ideas so I fiddled around and got it to work with CTRL+OPTION+COMMAND+FN + Delete

It works every time but order is important, press Ctrl+Opt+Command, than FN and hold, than hit Delete.

Sometimes I have to hit Delete twice but it could be my Mac fighting for pointer with Virtual box.

Try this, hopefully it helps, it works for me every time.

Ctrl + Alt + Del с клавиатурой Mac

Windows.

  • Fn + Backspace = Del

Ctrl Alt Del .

Windows VM.

Fn + Control + Alt/Option + Command + Delete .
