Description

Write without distractions. WriteRoom is a full screen writing environment. Unlike the cluttered word processors you’re used to, WriteRoom lets you focus on writing.

• Fast handling of large documents.
• Live word count, reading time, and more.
• Shift line up, down, left, and right commands.
• Select word, sentence, and paragraph commands.
• Automatically log your writing sessions to a spreadsheet.
• Use themes to save, switch, and share your favorite settings.
• Choose your own background images, paper textures, and typing sounds.

“But if, when it comes right down to it, full screen is your r grail, and the ultimate antidote to the bric-a-brac of Word, then you must enter the WriteRoom, the ultimate spartan writing utopia.”
— Virginia Heffernan, NYT

“Unlike practically everything else in our digital lives, WriteRoom’s minimalist interface implies a truly flattering proposition: It’s you, not the software, that matters.”
— Jeffrey MacIntyre, Slate

“WriteRoom’s minimalist interface also frees you from the nagging urge to fiddle with margins, fonts, and other settings, leaving you with nothing to do but write.”
— Nathan Alderman, MacWorld

“A perfectly balanced, indispensable part of any Mac writer’s toolkit.”
— Craig Grannell, Mac Format

What’s New

* Fix: Sandboxing issue with QuickCursor
* Fix: Sandboxing issue when changing between plain text and rich text
* Fix: Crash when using Shift Left in some circumstances

Ratings and Reviews

OK, but has issues

It’s great at what it does when it does what it’s great at. Full screen, distraction-free writing is its forte. Interaction with the OS and other features — not so much. Full-screen is kludgy at best. Since that’s the entire point of distraction-free writing, it seems like the first thing you’d want to get right, but alas. It can and will cause the application to crash and be unable to re-open. Opening a document in full screen while WriteRoom is already running makes it full screen as the default desktop, making everything else on that screen inaccessible. You have to exit full screen then make it full screen explicitly for it to work. Sounds are great, but crippled: the space bar needs its own sound. Sessions are really cool, but they’re incorrectly formatted: there’s no space after the headers and the first line of session data so you have to manually edit the session file or it doesn’t show up in Excel correctly. There needs to be a markup export feature. I had to buy another app to parse my output. The auto-indent feature is beyond useless and annoying as hell. If someone thinks its useful, please give the rest of us the option of getting rid of it.

It’s a great concept but execution is pretty flawed. To be fair though, none of these stop me from using it. Mostly because I’m too lazy to try and find a competitor.

Great for writing, less great for editing

There are so many things I love about this software! I love the distraction-free mode when writing, the different backgrounds and color choices, and the way the page scrolls to keep up with me when I’m writing. However, I feel as though it has very limited editing/formatting options: you can’t set page numbers, for example, and I only just figured out how to indent the first lines of paragraphs after using the software for months.

I understand that this app is geared towards writing, but I wish that the creators would remember that editing is a crucial part of the writing process, and making the editing and formatting options more robust and easier to use.

Disappointed

I’d been using TextEdit for the majority of my writing (school and recreational), but I wanted a more proficient document software where I could control the page margins and such (college is very particular about papers being submitted in MLA). So, about a month ago, I purchased WriteRoom (mostly because of the price). I was disappointed. I feel like I have less control over the format of my document, as I can no longer change font, size, or italicize only a certain portion of my text (it has a meltdown whenever I try to italicize something). The full screen mode froze my computer.

The one thing I really liked about the software was the live word count. As an aspiring author, I found the live word count useful for tracking me progress, and it also came in very handy during NaNoWriMo. But, beyond that, I was disappointed by this software. About five minutes ago (after WriteRoom froze yet again), I transferred my book back into TextEdit, which has proven to be more reliable.

Apple Beginning Sounds Write the Room Alphabet Activity

This differentiated apple beginning sounds write the room activity is perfect for fall literacy centers in preschool and kindergarten.

Apple Beginning Sounds Write the Room

I’ve been wanting to create a few write the room and count the room activities and I finally got around to it!

This apple beginning sounds write the room activity is going to add fun and movement to your literacy centers this fall.

It gives kids a chance to get up and move around the room while learning the alphabet, letter sounds, and letter formation.

It is jam-packed with learning opportunities!

Differentiated Apple Alphabet Activity

Work on the first half of the alphabet or the second depending on which letters and sounds each group of students needs to work on.

You could even cut the recording sheets in half for students who would benefit by having less letters to work on at once.

The recording sheets are also differentiated for you. There is a version with a tracing guide for each letter.

This is helpful to students who need more support with deciphering which letter is being represented on the apple cards.

I also chose to put the letter on the apple cards because I think most students can benefit from having more support at the beginning of the year.

Students who are able to determine the beginning sound and letter represented on the apple cards will still benefit from the extra practice and reinforcement offered with this activity.

If you really don’t like the letters being on the apple cards, you could also cover them with a sticker or something like that.

Low-Prep Apple Literacy Activity

This apple theme count the room activity is super simple to prep too!

Supplies Needed:

  • Apple Beginning Sounds Write the Room printables (button to download at the bottom of this post)
  • Clipboards to write on while walking around
  1. Print out the apple cards and recording sheets.
  2. Cut the apple cards apart.
  3. Put the apple cards in various places around the room. Many people temporarily adhere them to the wall.
  4. Put recording sheets on clipboards.

Students will grab a clipboard and walk around the room looking for apple cards.

When they come to an apple card, they will use the the picture on the apple to identify the letter represented.

As mentioned above, the letter is also shown at the top left of the card for extra support.

Once they determine the letter represented, they will look for the picture on on their recording sheet.

Once they find that picture, they will write the letter in the space provided. There is room to write each letter more than once. This gives you the option to decide how many times you want them to write them.

Students will continue until they fill in all the spaces on the recording sheet.

I hope your kids have lots of fun with this apple beginning sounds write the room activity!
