Are there any apple stores in korea

Are there Apple stores in Korea ?

ARe there Apple stores in Korea? You bet there are. Photo: Hightouch.kr

When I first arrived to Korea, I needed a converter plug for my Apple Powerbook. I asked around. I was given an apologetic look and an explanation that there weren’t many Apple stores in Korea.

I was told there was one store in Seoul called Frisbee. Whuh?

How can there not be tons of Apple stores in Korea?

Well, maybe you should ask it’s Korean competitors Samsung and LG

The fact is there were more stores than I was led to believe… they just weren’t exactly Apple stores. They were resellers.

Are there Apple stores in Korea ?

Although PCs are still the preferred computer in Korea, it’s really iPhone that gave Korea a reason to open the doors to Apple.

Korea has two certified Apple Reseller stores. Prices at both stores are competitive to Apple prices, so you won’t be getting it any cheaper than the U.S., unless the Korean won is high.

Frisbee store is a certified Apple reseller (Busan location near PIFF)

Frisbee

Frisbee is my preferred Apple reseller store. Frisbee is the most accessible with locations in Seoul, Daegu, Busan and Daejeon. It also looks and feels like a regular Apple store and they have customer service in English . If they have a product out of stock, you can order it from Apple through their site and the store will let you know when it arrives. There is a trick to ordering Apple products however, so keep reading.

a# shop

a# is a store I discovered when I visited CoEx Mall in Seoul. It doesn’t seem as convincing of an Apple store as Frisbee, as they aren’t dedicated primarily to Apple products, nor do they mimic it’s floor plan. But they stock Apple computers, gadgets and accessories.

a+ store at Coex Shopping Mall in Seoul

How do you order Apple products in Korea?

This is where it gets tricky.

I needed a USB to ethernet converter for my new Macbook Air. Frisbee didn’t carry it at any of their locations and Apple online doesn’t ship to Korea.

Option 1: The only way to order your product online from Apple via the Frisbee site is you need a Korean credit card.

How you do pay without a Korean credit card?

Most expats don’t have a Korean credit card. Getting them can be as challenging as getting a Korean phone. But the interesting thing about the Korean community is that there’s trust in the community. .. And a flexibility with foreigners.

Option 2: If you can’t get a Korean credit card, then ask a Korean person to make the purchase for you.

Simple and hard as that.

In my case, I was in the Myeongdong Frisbee in Seoul. I didn’t have a Korean credit card nor did I know someone who could lend me theirs, so the sale boy let me place my order using his card and I would reimburse him on the spot with cash.

Updated note: It used to be difficult to get a Korean credit card but these days, KEB (the bank of expats) issues credit cards if you hold a working visa and contract.

AirPort Apple Store

Korea Tech BLog presents :

Apple Premium ReSellers and Apple Shops
in inCheon AirPort, BuPyeong, inCheon City and GimPo Airport

since I have a lot of visitors searching to buy Apple products at airports,
here will introduce :

  • mainly at inCheon Airport and Duty-Free Shops within,
  • near airports at the Western Port City of inCheon,
  • Gimpo Airport formerly spelled Kimpo (serves domestic and selective routes to Japan and China only)
  • and later to add KimHae Airport serving the South-Eastern Port City of Busan or Pusan
  • most larger super-marts including ShinSeGae’s eMart and SamSung’s HomePlus sell selective/popular Apple products at their electronics corners but will not mention here except those few linked directly to airports
  • almost NONE of these stores sell iPhone NOR iPad 3G/LTE models for they are sold with subscription contracts at cell phone carriers SK or KT branches, which a whole set of different listing

all the contents hold true as of end of April 2012 and may change, as much is with Apple Korea’s name-juggling of “Premium ReSellers” and “Shops” in place of conventional “Stores”, and I will NOT differentiate between them for it is a game of mostly words with some selling /other/ brands than Apple – that’s it .

I state again : there is NO Official Apple Store as in the States, other than an On-Line Store with the same reputable product support and customer service . also, other On-Line stores are generally the cheapest and have the most variety of any product in South Korea, post-Millennium, than even Duty-Free Shops and those in Department Stores .

so for those with limited time from inCheon Airport : I suggest you

  1. look through the stores in the airport mentioned below,
  2. then take the train or out-of-city bus out to the nearest metropolis : inCheon where you can visit a couple of Department Stores in which several Apple-contracted stores await .
  3. the next-best alternative would be to take the Airport Express Train to KimPo Airport where again a couple of more stores can be found .

geographical proximity-wise : 2.above is closer but would take time on the bus, still the stores are much larger as it is a major shopping complex-and-bus terminal in South Korea’s 6th City,
where-as 3.is further but fast and convenient in a few stops via Express Train, still smaller and fewer stores since it is merely a local airport hub :

as you can tell from the map above : inCheon Airport far Left, is formed by filling 3 islands and the closest cities to the Right are in order inCheon, BuPyong, BuCheon and Kimpo, after which is the Capital of Seoul .

I will mention as far as BuPyong which has a shopping complex at its subway station, but will pass on its next neighbor BuCheon, for although it has a few Apple stores in a couple of department stores, it is NOT a metropolis and more considered rural and there is a chance of taxi’s going around un-necessarily .

sure you want everything in a single map, but still due to inconsistencies between Google, Daum and Naver – the most used maps in South Korea – not yet . however, my guide also go from West to clock-wise geographically .

PORT CITY OF BUSAN OR PUSAN

then three Frisbee Apple Stores in the South-Eastern Port City of Busan or Pusan, again in the most shopping areas for the young :

Busan Main Store is located smack in the middle of Busan’s old fashion mecca NanPoDong overlapping GwangBokDong thus it is in the midst of alleys and severl ways to get there but here the easiest to explain
Busan or Pusan Subway Line 1 NanPo Station 7 Exit 7 take a sharp Left and stroll along Busan’s Camera Row past the Post Office and further past Holly’s Coffee Shop then take Right after Kentucky Fried Chicken shortened to ‘KFC’ in South Korea, and is soon on your Left 051-245-1035

the whole blocks West is the old KkangTtong ShiJang translated “Can” Market for mostly food rations were smuggled out of US Bases after the Korean War and still carries American and Japanese cans and small electronics .

the whole blocks South-East is Busan’s own Photo-alley lined up with Camera stores as electronics are huddled across the ferry from Japan – but more have opened up North in Busan’s newer fashion district SeoMyon (explained below)

remember across from the road you exited the subway is Korea’s infamous fisherman’s warf selling today’s catch but beware it has become a tourist trap with bullies trying to lure you -_-
    .

SeoMyon Busan Subway Line 1 or 2 (this is where the two major subway intersect so imagine a real hub) SeoMyun Exit 1 and stroll South along Busan’s newer (more newer is Centum City Complex though) fashion district (across the street you will see MacDonalds Hamburger then Kentucky Fried Chicken – this whole road across has the larger – but not so compared to Seoul – bookstores in Busan carrying English and Japanese) then take a Right at the next large alley and is on the next block to your Right 051-808-0947

and because across the street I mention above is THE place they have a smaller branch named “Mini SeoMyon ” across the street before you take that Right
straight into the alley and is on your Right on top of another MacDonalds Hamburger .

    2 (with Support Center)

    2
this is at the entrance of “GaRoSuGil” a North-South alley full of the most-trendy imports -than European Brand Names – and fusion restaurants .

Seoul Subway Line 2 JamSil Station Exit 2 connected to Lotte World within Lotte Mart Digital Park ground floor 02-2143-1500

midnight open year-round (with Support Center)

as Apple is tightening its “Premium ReSeller” status from mid-2011, to ample-budgeted vendors with ability to increase branch locations, expect the bigger stores to increase dramatically as smaller closing soon ..

and I say again : although the above are nice places to try out your gadget yearnings and for a clean date but still the price will be cheaper on on-Line internet shopping malls .

also a bulk of accessories over-lap among the mentioned Premium ReSellers and some – especially of rare color varieties – still NOT imported so you will have to order from abroad for example :

so Merry Christmas . and let’s ponder how sexy techno-life can be from the New Year without Steve Jobs .. a hint may be in the new Television series “Revenge”

    – Korea Tech BLog, December 2011 and appended June 2015 –

( April 1st 2012 Update ) in the short 3 Months since this original Post Apple Korea had made and shuffled between

    1. “Apple Premium ReSeller”,
    2. “Apple Shop” (instead of the eager “Store”) and
    3. “Apple-Approved Seller

where Premium ReSeller deem to be those with whole building or a floor or even a larger corner, and Shop apt for electronics corners in supermarts, then Approved Seller a counter in a much expensive space in major department stores .

thus Apple seem to be inviting more local electronics store chains into the already confusing myriad of not-really, but die-hard Apple Store wanna-be’s yawn

( December 2013 Update ) Demographics of Apple product Retailers is changing big-time with the influx of Lotte Conglomerate into the rag-tag scene . noteable is the addition of electronics discount chain Hi-Mart amounting to a whopping one-hundred branches throughout South Korea – established 1999 in posh KangNam and acquired by Lotte Shopping since July 2012 . Lotte Conglomerate with Japanese roots – where Apple has been much more active on the Mac as well as iPhone and iPad, has aided foreign big-business to set-up in this alien land like recent iKEA – with their long expertise and wide branch network .

as a Post-Script : Lotte will continue to support Apple sales onto the end of 2015, where they will house several other ReSellers in their many Department Stores and Young Plaza branches .

( June 19 2015 Update ) Six years from the first influx of iPhone in 3GS into South Korea in 2009, and now mid-term of iPhone 6 and Plus, we are A Week to Apple Watch release : there are countless places that sell Apple mobile products in conjunction with many other brands at electronics store branches, thus it is not possible to list all in this Page while The Official Apple Korea WebSite not mentioning the term of Premium ReSeller any more – as they have been quite empty aside from Weeks of a new iPhone or iPad . NOT to indicate its popularity has risen on the home base of their major competitor, but it is now more saturated with less luster //
