Block phone numbers, contacts, and emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

You can block phone numbers, contacts, and emails on your device. You can also filter iMessages from unknown senders and report iMessages that look like spam or junk.

Block a phone number, contact, or email

There are a few ways that you can block phone numbers, contacts, and emails.

Phone

From the Phone app, tap Recents, then tap the Info button next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll down, then tap Block this Caller.

FaceTime

From the FaceTime app, tap the Info button next to the phone number, contact, or email address that you want to block. Scroll down, then tap Block this Caller.

Messages

From the Messages app, open the conversation, tap the contact at the top of the conversation. Tap the info button, scroll down, then tap Block this Caller.

From the Mail app, open the email that has the contact that you want to block, then tap the contact at the top. Tap Block this Contact.

When you block a phone number or contact, they can still leave a voicemail, but you won’t get a notification. Messages that are sent or received won’t be delivered. Also, the contact won’t get a notification that the call or message was blocked. When you block an email address from Mail, it goes to the trash folder. Email blocking works across all your Apple devices.

Manage your blocked phone numbers, contacts, and emails

To see the phone numbers, contacts, and email addresses that you’ve blocked from Phone, FaceTime, Messages, or Mail:

Phone

Go to Settings > Phone and tap Blocked Contacts to see the list.

FaceTime

Go to Settings > FaceTime. Under Calls, tap Blocked Contacts.

Messages

Go to Settings > Messages. Under SMS/MMS, tap Blocked Contacts.

Go to Settings > Mail. Under Threading, tap Blocked.

Filter messages from unknown senders

You can filter messages from people who aren’t saved in your Contacts.

To filter messages, go to Settings > Messages, scroll down and turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

In Messages, tap Filters, then tap Unknown Senders. You won’t get notifications for these messages.

Report spam or junk in the Messages app

You can report iMessages that look like spam or junk from the Messages app. If you get an iMessage from someone who’s not saved in your Contacts, you’ll see a Report Junk link under the message.

Tap Report Junk, then tap Delete and Report Junk. Messages will forward the sender’s information and the message to Apple, as well as delete the message from your device. You can’t undo deleting a message.

Reporting junk doesn’t block the sender from being able to send another message. If you don’t want to receive these messages, you need to block the contact.

To report SMS and MMS messages, contact your carrier.

How to Tell If Someone Blocked You on iPhone

This article explains several ways you can check if you’re iPhone’s been blocked by someone. There isn’t a foolproof method to find out if someone is blocking your calls on their iPhone outside of looking at the phone and checking the list of blocked numbers. However, there are some definite signs that can hint that they’ve blocked you.

The Best Way to Tell If Someone Blocked You Is to Ask Them

If your calls have gone unanswered and your texts never get a reply, it’s best to just ask them outright: Did you block me on your phone? There’s a chance they did and didn’t mean to.

If you’re uncomfortable asking them if they’ve blocked you, try these ideas.

How Many Times Did Your Call Ring?

The biggest indicator of a blocked call is a single ring that goes to voicemail. However, this doesn’t mean you’re definitely being blocked. If the other person is using their phone at that moment, especially if they’re talking to someone else, they can choose to accept or decline the call. This can explain a call that quickly goes to voicemail. Another possible straight-to-voicemail situation is if the other person’s phone is turned off or the battery is drained.

The iPhone has a Do Not Disturb mode that may interfere with your call getting through. If the recipient has this turned on, the phone call shouldn’t ring before going to voicemail. If you get one ring and then you hear their voicemail message, it probably isn’t because of Do Not Disturb.

Send a Text Message

The iPhone has the ability to send read receipts, which means it lets you know if the person read the message. Not everyone has this turned on, so it’s also not a definite way of telling if you’re blocked, but it is a good way to find out if you’re not blocked.

When you send a message to a friend that has you blocked, the status will quickly turn to Delivered on your side, but your friend will never receive the message. Because of this, they can’t read your message. Check back after an hour or so. If the status has changed from Delivered to Read, they’re not blocking you.

You could also use a free texting service to send the text. If they respond to that message and not the text from your phone, it could mean that they didn’t receive yours because they blocked you.

Call With Caller ID Disabled

Here’s a sneaky trick: Disable Caller ID. In North America, dial *67 in front of the phone number, such as *675551239870. Do this immediately after having the phone call go to voicemail after a single ring to see if they answer the unknown call.

Outside North America, check the Caller ID Wikipedia page for the codes to disable Caller ID. Not all countries allow Caller ID to be disabled, and even in countries that allow it, it can’t be deactivated on calls to emergency numbers such as 911.

You can also disable Caller ID. Open Settings on the iPhone, scroll down to Phone, and turn off Show My Caller ID.

Also, this doesn’t mean your friend has blocked you. Many people refuse to answer calls without Caller ID, and even if it rings once and goes to voicemail, they may have immediately declined the call.

The Sneakiest Way to Tell If You’re Being Blocked Is to Call in Person

The next time you see the person, call them. This works best when you’re with a group of people and the person has their phone out. If you call and there’s no indication on the phone or from your friend that the call is being placed, they probably have you blocked.

Remember, a phone in a pocket or messenger bag may be on vibrate mode, which is why it’s important to call the recipient while their phone is out.

1. Phone Calls

The most obvious action that follows blocking someone on your iPhone is that the blocked number/contact will not be able to reach you via phone calls. But what happens to their phone calls afterward? Will their calls be automatically declined? Will you receive a notification that they called? What response would the blocked contact/number get on their end whenever they call you — after they’ve been blocked?

Well, from the experiment I carried out, the aftereffects of blocking a contact is dependent on your network provider. In simpler words, the response that the blocked contacts will receive whenever they call you shall largely depend on your network provider.

Some network providers will inform the blocked caller that your number is unreachable, while others will divert the blocked contact‘s call straight to your voicemail. In the case of the latter, people you have blocked can still leave you a voicemail. Interestingly, voicemails from blocked contacts are not grouped with your regular messages. Instead, they are positioned at the bottom of the voicemail section of the Dialer/Phone app.

2. Text Messages and iMessage

Before you block a number on your iPhone, you should see a prompt informing you that you will not receive call phone calls, messages, and FaceTime from blocked contacts.

So, here’s what happens when you block someone on your iPhone, and they try to send you a text. First, they will be charged for the text message(s) by their network carriers, and the text would be sent. However, because you’ve blocked the person, their texts will not be delivered to your iPhone. The same applies to iMessage.

Messages from blocked numbers will not be delivered to your inbox. And on the sender’s end, the messages will not be marked as ‘Delivered’.

3. FaceTime

From the explanations above, you should already have a clue about what happens to block contacts on FaceTime, too. They will not be able to make voice or video FaceTime calls to you. When a number you’ve blocked on your iPhone calls you on FaceTime, the call will ring endlessly on the caller’s end. Your iPhone, on the other hand, will not ring, and you won’t be notified of the call.

4. Mail

If there’s an iCloud address linked to the contact you blocked, the person would still be able to send your emails. The mails would be marked as ‘Blocked’ and they would still appear in your regular inbox.

However, you can configure your iPhone’s Mail app to move emails from blocked contacts to Bin. To do so, follow the steps listed below.

Step 1: Launch the iPhone Settings menu and select Mail.

Step 2: Next, select ‘Blocked Sender Options’.

Step 3: Finally, select ‘Leave in Inbox’ if you want emails from blocked contacts to remain in your inbox. Otherwise, select ’Move to Bin’ if you want emails from blocked contacts to be moved to the Mail app’s Bin automatically.

Note: Blocked contacts can still send emails to your iCloud email address using third-party email clients (Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, etc.).

How to Know If Someone Blocked Your Number on iPhone

Although you won’t be notified when someone blocks your number (or email address) on their iPhones, the combination of the following cues is a clear indication that you’ve surely been blocked:

• Your iMessage texts to the number don’t get marked as Delivered for a long time.

• The contact doesn’t pick up your FaceTime calls.

• Calling the person’s phone number always redirects you to their voicemail.

• The person doesn’t reply to your emails.

• You can reach the person via phone call using another number.

If you suspect that you’ve been blocked by someone using an iPhone, try checking the clues listed above. If all of them check out, especially the last one, then you have most likely been blocked.
