EASY Baked Apple Slices
Baked apple slices recipe with fresh apple slices, baked with sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

No time to make an apple pie? No desire for a crust? You can get your apple pie fix quickly just with baked apple slices!
My parents have three apple trees on which we grow 15 varieties of apples, so we are always looking for quick and easy apple recipes.
My mother started baking apple slices this way for an everyday dessert a few years ago and it is what we have almost every night during apple season.
How to make baked apple slices
It’s so easy! All you have to do is toss some slices of peeled and cored apples with cinnamon and sugar and put them in the microwave for few minutes.
When the apple slices are cooked through, give them a quick stir with a sprinkle of maple syrup.
We did struggle with what to call it. Mom wanted, «apple pie without the crust», but we nixed that. «Apple pie filling» didn’t go over very well either.
«Baked apple slices» is as near as we can come, even though they aren’t baked in the oven but cooked rather quickly in a microwave.
Don’t have a microwave? Put the apples and cinnamon sugar in a baking dish, add a 1/3 cup of water to the pan, cover it with foil and bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender.

EASY Baked Apple Slices
As you slice up the apples, check for their flavor. If they don’t taste good raw, believe me, they aren’t going to taste good cooked.
Ingredients
4 cups of peeled, sliced apples — use apples that cook up well, like Fuji or Jonagold
3 tablespoons sugar
A sprinkle of cinnamon
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Method
Put apple slices in a glass bowl. Sprinkle on top the 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add a light sprinkle of cinnamon.
Bake in microwave oven for 5 minutes on high heat. Adjust the time for your microwave and how many apples you are doing. Ours has a powerful high setting so 4 cups of apples only takes 5 minutes.
If you use more apples, you will probably need to cook it a little longer. I suggest starting with 5 minutes and testing for doneness with a fork. If it needs more cooking time, give it more.
When done, remove and mix so the sugar coats the apple pieces. Add maple syrup to taste, about 1 tablespoon.
To serve, add whipped cream on the top or vanilla ice cream on the side.

Baked apple slices no sugar
Warm, soft cinnamon baked apple slices with no added sugar. This healthy 3-ingredient recipe is so easy to make in the oven or crockpot. These healthy baked apples are perfect for serving with ice cream, on pancakes, or drizzled with almond butter for a snack!
When autumn arrives and the weather cools, nothing beats warm cinnamon apples. This easy baked apple recipe (though hardly a recipe!) is my definition of comfort throughout the fall and winter. These are the baked apple slices from my childhood. The exact recipe my mom used to make. These baked apples require just few simple ingredients that transform sweet, crisp apples into warm a gooey compote reminiscent of apple pie filling.
These three-ingredient baked apple slices can be made in the oven or in a slower cooker. Both methods work great and result in sweet, gooey apples. I highly recommend making a batch on the weekend so you can enjoy them throughout the week. This no-sugar-added recipe makes for great breakfast, snack or healthy dessert. I like eating these warm on top of Greek-style yogurt or on top of oatmeal with a spoonful of almond butter. If you want to take these baked apple slices more of a dessert route, try them with my sweet cashew cream or a scoop of your favorite ice cream.
Healthy Baked Cinnamon Apples Ingredients
This healthy baked apple recipe requires only three ingredients, plus a splash of water. These baked apples have no added sugar. The sweetness comes from the natural sugars in the apples that concentrates as they cook. Here’s what you’ll need to make these healthy baked cinnamon apple slices.
- Apples – using a variety of sweet baking apples such as Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Fuji, or Jonagold that hold up in the oven works best. But honestly, you can use any apples you have on hand.
- Water – a touch of water helps prevent the apples from sticking to the pot and burning. This also helps create a the gooeyness, reminiscent of apple pie filling.
- Lemon juice – the tart lemon juice provides a balance to the sweet apples.
- Cinnamon – these aren’t cinnamon apples without the cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon has numerous health benefits but I actually prefer the taste Vietnamese cinnamon. It’s a little spicier and more flavorful. You could also switch things up by adding in nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cardamon, or a blend of these spices.

Apple NUTRITION
Apples have a low glycemic index, meaning they won’t raise blood sugar levels as high as other simple carbohydrates. This is due to their high fiber content. Since most of the fiber in apples is found in the skin, I recommend keeping the skin on when eating apples or using them in recipes. Fiber is so important for digestion, blood sugar stabilization, and detoxification.
Apples are also a good source of vitamin C potassium and the antioxidants quercetin and catechin. Quercetin has an anti-inflammatory effect, whereas catechin has been shown to improve brain and muscle function. (1) (2) (3)

Skinny on No-Bake Sugar-Free Sliced Apple «Cookies»
I’ve discovered that when it comes to sweet cravings, apples are a great choice.
They’re crunchy, they’re sweet, and best of all, they’re a good source of fiber, which allows fruit to deliver its sweetness slowly, preventing insulin spikes that can lead to diabetes and damage to the blood vessels.
While plain apples are always a good choice, sometimes it can be fun to fancy them up with other healthful ingredients that are also a little decadent.
In this simple sweet snack, apple slices are topped with a smidgen of almond butter, banana slices, cinnamon, and dark cocoa powder.
Why settle for a cookie when you can nibble on this nourishing sweet treat instead?
I’ve made these sliced apple «cookies» several times since first discovering them.
I can enjoy a whole plate for the same SmartPoints of just one of these salted peanut chocolate chip cookies (a good healthy choice when only a more traditional cookie will do.)
It’s a deliciously fun way to get your apple a day.

different nut butters — substitute a different nut or seed butter for the almond butter such as peanut butter, cashew butter, walnut butter, sunflower seed butter, sesame seed butter (tahini), pumpkin seed butter, soy butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, etc.
different fruits — the flavor will be different depending on the variety of apple you choose. This would also work with pear slices and Asian apple pears.
different toppings — leave out the cocoa powder if it seems to bitter for you. Experiment with a dash or other sweet spices such as cardamom, nutmeg, ginger or cloves. Finely chopped candied ginger or dark chocolate would be nice, as would a sprinkling of shredded coconut.

Baked Apple Slices

Deliciously fragrant baked apple slices are ready in just 30 minutes and contain no added sugar.
They’re one of my favorite afternoon snacks. I like to serve them with some tangy, creamy Greek yogurt.
Apples are amazing. Biting into a crisp sweet apple is such a pleasure! Although when eaten raw, I’m one of those who like tart apples. Granny Smith is my favorite variety, but not for cooking! I actually like it raw. 🍏
Sliced raw apple is delicious, no doubt. But when you take those same apple slices, sprinkle them with cinnamon and bake them, the crunchy, tart fruit transforms into a fragrant, sweet, delicious dessert.
Ingredients
There’s nothing sweeter than a short ingredient list, don’t you agree? Well, for this easy recipe, you’ll only need three ingredients: a Fuji apple, some unsalted butter, and ground cinnamon. That’s it!
Instructions
Baking apple slices in the oven is so easy. In fact, this is one of my easiest recipes. I included the detailed instructions below in the recipe card. Here’s an overview of the basic steps:
You start by cutting the apple into slices. I simply cut it into quarters around the core, then slice the quarters. You can see exactly how I do it in the video below.
Next, arrange the apple pieces in a parchment-lined square baking dish. Pour melted butter on top and use your hands to coat the apples with the butter.
Sprinkle the apples with half the cinnamon. I don’t add any sugar! I think it’s unnecessary.
The final step is to bake the apples until tender, about 10 minutes on each side in a 400°F oven. When you turn the slices, midway through baking, sprinkle them with the remaining cinnamon.
Expert tip
You can skip the butter if you wish. The butter does enhance the apple’s flavor, but I find that the apple slices are delicious even without it. If you do use butter, make sure it’s unsalted.
Frequently asked questions
I like to use Fuji apples. They are sweet, so they don’t require an added sweetener. And they withstand baking well. Honeycrisp is another good variety.
While I do enjoy them raw, I find that Granny Smith apples are a bit too tart for a cooked apple recipe that has no added sugar. So I prefer not to use them in this recipe.
Whole apples take longer to be cooked through (30-40 minutes), but sliced apples are ready fast — all they need are 20 minutes in a 400°F oven.
I don’t add any sugar when I make this recipe. Fuji apples provide more than enough sweetness, in my opinion. In fact, I find that fruit-based recipes rarely need added sugar. Fruits are very sweet!
As long as you don’t use tart varieties such as Granny Smith, there’s truly no need for added sugar. Simply sprinkle the apples with cinnamon, then bake them until tender.
There’s no need to peel the apple — the skin softens nicely in the oven. However, if you wish, you can certainly peel it.
Serving suggestions
Baked apple slices make a wonderful homemade dessert. Or you can serve them with a cup of plain Greek yogurt for a filling snack.
My kids love having them with yogurt for their afternoon snack! They either dip the apples into the yogurt or mix them in.
They also make a great topping for pancakes such as these almond flour pancakes.
Storing leftovers
Leftovers keep well in the fridge in a sealed container for 3-4 days. I simply reheat them in the microwave, covered, on 50% power. They are also surprisingly good when eaten cold.
