The 16 Apple TV Plus shows you should watch first
Apple TV Plus shows started immediately with the streaming service’s launch in November 2019. Since then, we have seen a low but steady trickle of new series debut on the service, and now there’s enough content to dive deep into its selections. But which options are the best Apple TV Plus shows? Good question, and one we aim to explore here.
As you will see, the original Apple TV Plus series already have a variety of content, from children’s shows to more mature series just for their moms and dads.
Remember, if you buy a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV box, you get three months of the service for free (read more about it here.) For everyone else, you can sign up now for Apple TV Plus for $4.99 a month, following a seven-day free trial, at the link below.
Best Apple TV Plus shows:
Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best Apple TV Plus shows regularly as new ones hit the streaming service.
For All Mankind
This is our favorite of the current crop of Apple TV Plus shows. It’s an alternate history tale, showing the Soviet Union winning the race to put a man on the moon in 1969. In response, the NASA of this timeline decides to keep going. Part of their plan is to recruit more women and minorities into the US space program much earlier than what happened in our reality. It’s a different look at how early space exploration could have happened. Two seasons of the show are available, and the third one is in the works.
Dickinson
Emily Dickinson is a real-life US poet who inspired tons of other writers over the decades. This show examines a fictionalized version of Dickinson’s early life. The twist is that this incarnation of the poet, as played by Hailee Steinfeld, and her friends act and sound more like teenagers in modern times. It’s not exactly historically accurate, but it is entertaining. You can watch the first two seasons now. The third and final season is set to debut in November.
Home Before Dark
We have read stories about fictional young reporters in school. However, this show tells the story of a real-life young journalist, Hilde Lysiak. As played by Brooklynn Prince in this series, the 11-year old Lysiak publishes her own newspaper for her community. Things take a big turn for her as she starts investigating a murder that happened near her home. You can watch the first season now and the second season is in the works.
Ghostwriter
This reboot of the classic children’s TV series focuses on four kids. They attempt to solve mysteries tied into well-known books like The Jungle Book and Alice in Wonderland. This series might be an excellent first step if you have kids and want to encourage them to read more.
Defending Jacob
This Apple TV Plus show is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by William Landay. Chris Evans takes off his Captain America uniform and shield as the star of this series. He plays an assistant DA in a Massachusetts town, who suddenly has to deal with his son Jacob being accused of murdering a classmate in school. This is an old-fashioned murder mystery, but with some family drama as well.
Mythic Quest
HBO’s Silicon Valley made a comedy out of the creation of tech startups. Mythic Quest does something similar. Instead of an internet app company, this show is about the workings of a video game developer. Specifically, it centers on the creator of an MMO game and his team members that have to deal with his sometimes outrageous ideas and requests. Rob McElhinney, the co-creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, also co-created this show and stars as its lead character Ian Grimm, who sometimes believes his job is to “create worlds.” You can watch the first two seasons now, and two more are in the works.
Little America
This series isn’t as flashy or as high concept as most of the other Apple TV Plus shows on this list. Instead, it’s more human and heartwarming. It’s an anthology show, with each episode following an emigrant as he or she tries to make a life in America. Episodes have shown the life of a Nigerian boy who comes to Oklahoma and becomes a cowboy, along with a Chinese woman who ends up winning a cruise for her family. It shows the American experience through many different eyes.
This sci-fi series takes place hundreds of years in the future after an unnamed disaster strikes the Earth and blinds all humans. The few survivors manage to stay alive, and one tribe of people, led by Aquaman’s Jason Momoa, weds an already pregnant woman. To their surprise, she has twins, both of which can see. This development gets the attention of a rival tribe, who wants the twins for their own purposes. This is a different sort of post-apocalyptic tale with heart and family. You can watch the first two seasons now and a third season is in the works.
Servant
M. Night Shyamalan is an executive producer of this thriller series and also directed two of its episodes. The show itself fits with his dark storytelling themes. A young couple deals with the tragic death of their baby boy. However, the wife later starts to care for a reborn doll that she thinks is alive. The husband hires a nanny to help take care of their “child,” but she seems to act like this thing is real as well. Get ready for some Shyamalan-style twists and turns in this series. You can watch two seasons now, and a third will debut in January 2022.
The Morning Show
This show is by far the biggest high-concept series on Apple TV Plus. It also has the biggest stars, with Jennifer Aniston as a national morning news anchor who is shocked when her co-anchor, played by Steve Carell, is fired for alleged sexual misconduct. To make matters worse for Aniston’s character, she also has to deal with a rising young female reporter, played by Reese Witherspoon. The office and media politics can sometimes get a bit confusing and dull. Still, the performances by Aniston, Carell, Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup as a news executive make this show very watchable. The long-awaited second season has just started running on the service.
Central Park
This animated show comes from Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard. Like that show, Central Park was developed first for the Fox network. However, Fox decided not to move forward, so Apple snapped it up. It takes place in and around New York City’s Central Park and centers on people who either work in the park or make their living in the area as “buskers” or street performers. Josh Gad voices a busker and serves as the show’s main narrator. Kathryn Hahn and Josh Gad are also among the show’s principal voice cast, as is Stanley Tucci. He takes on the role of businessperson Bitsy Brandenham, who wants to take over Central Park to put up condos. A second season is in the works.
Ted Lasso
Culture clash, with some hilarious results, in this entry on the Apple TV Plus shows lineup. Jason Sudeikis plays the title character. Ted Lasso loves football, and he’s managed to snag a position as a football coach in a small college. However, through some unlikely means, Lasso is about to hit the big time. He’s going to coach a major professional football team; a major professional UK football (a.k.a. soccer) team. Lasso tries to show confidence, but he knows nothing about this sport. His move to win over the team with the lessons he learned across the pond makes this one of the funniest of the Apple TV Plus shows.
Ted Lasso has become the flagship show of Apple TV Plus. In addition to near-unanimous praise from critics and fans, the show recently won seven 2021 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. You can watch two seasons now, and a third season is coming in 2022.

The Best Shows on Apple TV Plus Right Now (December 2021)
What to watch on Apple TV this month
As a late entrant to the streaming melee, you might not think there’s much worth watching on Apple TV+ but think again. Lots of great new shows have been released on the service, and they keep getting better all the time. Here are the ones we think are worth watching right now. Keep in mind the TV-MA rating: Not all of these shows are made with children in mind.
Acapulco (2021): Funniest Bilingual Rags-to-Riches Comedy
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Comedy
Starring: Enrique Arrizon, Fernando Carsa, Damián Alcázar
Created By: Eduardo Cisneros, Jason Shuman, Austin Winsberg
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 1
Today, Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) is a wealthy man, but growing up poor in the resort town of Acapulco wasn’t easy. Set in both the present day and the 1980s, Acapulco is an unlikely rags-to-riches story about a man who went from pool boy to self-made millionaire.
Enrique Arrizon plays the young Máximo with all the charm of a teenage telenovela heartthrob. Acapulco features both Spanish and English dialogue, but there are subtitles for viewers who aren’t bilingual.
Harriet the Spy (2021): Best Reboot of a Beloved Children’s Character
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.6/10
Genre: Animation, Family
Starring: Lacey Chabert, Beanie Feldstein, Jane Lynch
Created By: Will McRobb
TV Rating: TV-G
Number of Seasons: 1
Harriet the Spy brings the beloved children’s book series to the 21st century. Young Harriet (Beanie Feldstein), an aspiring writer with unyielding curiosity, often finds herself in over her head.
The animation designs are inspired by the illustrations of the original books, but the show has a distinctly modern feel that fits in nicely with Apple’s lineup of kid’s shows. There’s even a bit of humor for adults, but there’s nothing inappropriate for kids.
The Shrink Next Door (2021): Darkest True Story About a Bad Doctor
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.7/10
Genre: Drama
Starring: Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Hahn
Created By: Georgia Pritchett
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 1
Dr. Ike Herschkopf (Paul Rudd) is a very hands-on therapist who likes to get close to his patients. Sometimes, he gets a little too close. Marty (Will Ferrell) can tell you all about it because Dr. Herschkopf has driven away everyone else in his life.
Inspired by Joe Nocera’s podcast about the real-life psychiatrist Isaac Herschkopf, The Shrink Next Door will make your skin crawl, but in a fun way. Will Ferrell has grown immensely as an actor and makes this mini-series worth watching.
Swagger (2021): Best Sports Drama Based on a Real-Life Legend
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.4/10
Genre: Documentary, Sports
Starring: O’Shea Jackson Jr., Shinelle Azoroh, Ozie Nzeribe
Created By: Reggie Rock Bythewood
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 1
Swagger is a teen sports drama inspired by the life of its producer, NBA legend Kevin Durant. Don’t expect The Mighty Ducks. This show seriously explores the dynamics between coaches, parents, talent scouts, and desperate young players.
A three-time Olympic gold medal winner, Durant’s story would inspire anyone, but Swagger isn’t about his childhood. It’s a modern story about the world of youth sports that he grew up in.
Invasion (2021): Best Surprisingly Subtle Alien Attack Story
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 5.8/10
Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Starring: Tara Moayedi, Azhy Robertson, Daisuke Tsuji
Created By: Simon Kinberg, David Weil
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 1
Rather than focusing on the threat of the extraterrestrials, Invasion is about the dangers humans pose to each other during uncertain times. If you’ve ever seen the Twilight Zone episode «The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,» you might have an idea of where this alien story is going.
Invasion takes its time introducing characters and setting up situations, establishing a sense of mystery and dread that permeates the series. It starts off a little slow, but the pace picks up as the different plot threads come together.
Fraggle Rock: Rock On! (2020): Most Exciting Musical Muppet Comeback
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.6/10
Genre: Short, Family
Starring: John Tartaglia, Dave Goelz, Frankie Cordero
Created By: Jim Henson
TV Rating: TV-G
Number of Seasons: 1
Fraggle Rock was an underrated Jim Henson show about underground dwelling muppets that aired in the 1980s and 90s. Decades later, they’ve emerged from their caves for a rocking reboot.
Fraggle Rock: Rock On! will live on as an interesting historical artifact because it was created during the 2020 lockdowns, so scenes were filmed remotely from the performers’ homes. The episodes are short, but the songs will be stuck in your head for days.
Foundation (2021): Most Ambitious Adaptation of a Sci-Fi Book Series
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.7/10
Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi
Starring: Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell
Created By: Isaac Asimov
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 1
Isaac Asimov’s best-selling book series has been adapted into a big-budget Apple TV Plus exclusive. While it takes some liberties with the story in the books, Foundation is a satisfying space opera that spans across the galaxy. Led by mathematician Hari Seldon (Jared Harris), a team of renegades must work together to prevent the collapse of an empire.
With its galactic empires and armies of clones, Foundation has obvious parallels with Star Wars, but the books predate the famous film franchise by several decades. In fact, George Lucas could have very well been inspired by Asimov.
The Problem With Jon Stewart (2021): Most Glorious Return of a Talk Show Legend
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.4/10
Genre: Talk Show
Starring: Jon Stewart
Created By: Jon Stewart
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 1
The only real problem with Jon Stewart is that he’s been absent from our TVs for way too long. Finally, he’s back with a new talk show that combines comedy with political commentary. Every episode is a deep dive into a pertinent issue facing America today.
Famous for his days hosting The Daily Show, Stewart has been an outspoken advocate for 9/11 frontline workers. He’s now signed to a multi-year deal, so expect The Problem With Jon Stewart to stick around for a few seasons.
Wolfboy and the Everything Factory (2021): Most Creative Kid’s Cartoon
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.6/10
Genre: Animation, Fantasy, Adventure
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kassian Akhtar, Archie Yates
Created By: Edward Jesse, Toff Mazery
TV Rating: TV-G
Number of Seasons: 1
Curious Wolfboy (Kassian Akhtar) doesn’t quite fit in, so he ventures to the center of the Earth to make new friends. There he meets mysterious creatures called Spyrtes, who are responsible for running the Everything Factory, the place where everything in the world above gets made.
Wolfboy and the Everything Factory is an off-beat cartoon featuring exceptional animation and voice acting. While there are plenty of educational shows on Apple TV+, Wolfboy focuses on expanding children’s emotional intelligence.
The Morning Show (2020): Best Morning TV Catfight
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.4/10
Genre: Drama
Starring: Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell
Created By: Jay Carson, Kerry Ehrin
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 2
Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of a morning news show? The Morning Show gives a good, if somewhat dramatized, look. As one of the first shows released on Apple TV+, The Morning Show is a hit with the perfect balance of drama, rage, and self-indulgence while also tackling some heavy issues close to home for those of us in the audience.
Mich (Steve Carell) is a former morning anchor trying to get his job back. Alex (Jennifer Anniston) and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) are sometimes friends and sometimes enemies battling a sexist establishment as they try to save a morning news show.
Schmigadoon! (2021): Best Tribute to the Golden Age of Musicals
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.4/10
Genre: Comedy, Musical
Starring: Keegan-Michael Key, Cecily Strong, Fred Armisen
Created By: Ken Daurio, Cinco Paul
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 1
Did you know that writer, actor, and comedian Keegan-Michael Key is also a fabulous singer? Now the whole world knows thanks to HBO Max’s musical series Schmigadoon! Trapped in a town that’s trapped in a real-life musical, Josh (Key) and Melissa (Cecily Strong) have no choice but to join in the fun.
Schmigadoon! is a musical for people who love musicals in that it pays respect to beloved mid-century stage shows. In fact, the story is inspired by the 1947 musical and 1954 film Brigadoon.
The Snoopy Show (2021): Cutest Kids’ Show Based on a Classic Cartoon
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10
Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
Starring: Ethan Pugiotto, Terry McGurrin, Rob Tinkler
Created By: Rob Boutilier, Mark Evestaff, Alex Galatis
TV Rating: TV-G
Number of Seasons: 1
Charlie Brown is the de facto leader of the Peanuts gang, but everyone knows who’s the real star of the crew. Snoopy has been entertaining kids for decades, and thanks to Apple Plus, today’s generation can get acquainted with the world’s coolest beagle.
If you or your kids like The Snoopy Show, check out Snoopy in Space, another Apple Plus original. If you have kids, these series can act as a gateway to old classics like A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Doug Unplugs (2020): Best Animated Show About Experiential Learning
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.3/10
Genre: Family, Animation
Starring: Brandon James Cienfuegos, Kyrie McAlpin, Eric Bauza
Created By: Jim Nolan
TV Rating: TV-Y
Number of Seasons: 1
Doug Unplugs is another Apple Plus original for young children, and like most of the kid-friendly content on the platform, it has an educational bent. This computer-animated show is all about Doug (Brandon James Cienfuegos), a cyborg who has to learn the ways of the world with help from his human companion Emma (Kyrie McAlpin).
Doug Unplugs is inspired by a book series of the same name, so it might inspire your kids to pick up a book. The show is made by DreamWorks Animation, which means you can expect top-quality CGI.
Central Park (2020): Best Animated Musical Sitcom for Adults
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.8/10
Genre: Animation, Comedy, Musical
Starring: Tituss Burgess, Daveed Diggs, Josh Gad
Created By: Loren Bouchard, Josh Gad, Nora Smith
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 2
Park manager Owen Tillerman (Leslie Odom Jr.) works and lives happily with his family in Edendale Castle (based on the real Belvedere Castle) in Central Park, New York. However, their happy existence is threatened when a wealthy real estate developer wants to turn their home into condominiums.
While the title may sound like a knock-off of South Park, Central Park is quite the opposite. The show is aimed at older audiences, but it’s not at all vulgar or violent. The plot centers around hot-button issues like gentrification, but it’s not preachy. All in all, Central Park is a fun sitcom that teens and adults can enjoy together.
Mr. Corman (2021): Best Workplace Comedy for Millennials
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.7/10

Hailee Steinfeld, Adrian Enscoe, Anna Baryshnikov
Created By: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
TV Rating: TV-MA

A promising young musician with high aspirations never gets his break, so he ends up teaching music in a public school. It’s a tale as old as time that is particularly relevant to young adults today who are stuck with student loans and a job they never wanted.
Directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mr. Corman can only be watched only on Apple TV+. The first two episodes are set to drop on August 6 with new episodes streaming every Friday.
Physical (2021): Best Dark Comedy Set in the 1980s
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 6.9/10
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Starring: Rose Byrne, Dierdre Friel, Rory Scovel
Created By: Annie Weisman
TV Rating: TV-PG
Number of Seasons: 1
During the 1980s, aerobicize was almost as popular as shows about the 1980s are today. In Physical, unhappy housewife Sheila (Rose Byrne) finds solace in sweat and spandex as she starts selling exercise tapes out of her home, much to the chagrin of her husband Danny (Rory Scovel).
The humor in Physical is a little darker than your average American sitcom. Nonetheless, the show still manages to be appropriate and entertaining for all ages.
Lisey’s Story (2021): Best New Stephen King Miniseries
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>

Anyone who grew up in the 1990s probably remembers watching at least one Stephen King miniseries on television. Lisey’s Story now joins the ranks of the original It, The Tommy Knockers, The Stand, and The Langoliers; however, the acting and production are much better than King’s previous made-for-TV projects.
Tiny World (2020): Best Nature Show About Cute Critters
IMDb Rating: 9.0/10
Genre: Documentary
Starring: Paul Rudd
Created By: Tom Hugh-Jones
TV Rating: TV-G
Number of Seasons: 2
There’s a world beneath our feet that most of us don’t know about. That’s not the setup for a new sci-fi show; it’s the premise of Tiny World, a docuseries about our planet’s tiniest inhabitants from the African savannah to the rainforests of South America.
Narrated by Paul Rudd, Tiny World debuted in 2020 to much praise, resulting in a second season being released in 2021.
The Mosquito Coast (2021): Wildest Run-for-the-Border Family Adventure
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>

Inspired by the 1981 book of the same name, The Mosquito Coast tells an original story set in modern-day North and Central America. The star of the show, Justin Theroux, is the nephew of Paul Theroux, the author of the original book.
Calls (2021): Most Creative Supernatural Anthology
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.8/10
Genre: Drama, Horror, Mystery
Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Clancy Brown, Nika Futterman
Created By: Fede Alvarez
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 1
Calls is more like a podcast or an old-timey radio show than your typical modern streaming series. The story unfolds entirely through phone conversations with very few visual elements. Each episode is a self-contained story, so you don’t have to watch them in order.
Calls was originally a French television series, but the American version features all-new actors and writers. While each episode stands on its own, the stories have an overlapping supernatural theme.
Ted Lasso (2020): Best British-American Sports Comedy
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.7/10
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Sports
Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt
Created By: Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, Bill Lawrence
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 2
Americans and Brits may speak the same language, but there are some irreconcilable linguistic differences. American Football coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) finds this out the hard way when he agrees to coach a football team in London, only to learn that it’s a completely different sport.
You may recognize the titular character from a series of NBC shorts promoting the network’s coverage of the Premier League. Jason Sudeikis’s portrayal of the lovably aloof coach captured the hearts of sports fans, and now he has his own show entering its second season.
Solar Opposites (2020): Best Adult Cartoon About Aliens
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 8.0/10
Genre: Animation, Comedy, Sci-Fi
Starring: Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone
Created By: Mike McMahan, Justin Roiland
TV Rating: TV-MA
Number of Seasons: 2
In a vast universe of mediocre adult cartoons, Solar Opposites shines thanks to wacky animation and wackier writing. This sci-fi sitcom follows the exploits of an extraterrestrial family exiled to Earth, as well as their pet humans, who live in the confines of a terrarium.
Solar Opposites is a Hulu original, but you can watch all of the episodes on Apple TV+. In fact, it was the most-watched show on the platform during the week of its release. The show is made by the creators of Rick and Morty, and you’ll likely notice lots of parallels in the visual style and humor.
Trying (2020): Best Sitcom for Future Parents
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true»/>
IMDb Rating: 7.6/10
Genre: Comedy
Starring: Rafe Spall, Esther Smith, Ophelia Lovibond
Created By: Andy Wolton
TV Rating: TV-14
Number of Seasons: 2
Like a lot of couples, Jason (Rafe Spall) and Nikki (Esther Smith) want nothing more than to be good parents. Unable to conceive on their own, they plan to adopt, which turns out to be a pretty involved process. Unsure of their own parenting skills, how will the couple convince strangers that they are capable of raising a child?
Trying is a great show to watch for expecting couples or anyone who might want to be a parent one day. It accurately represents the legal complexities of adoption and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with preparing for a kid. That said, Trying is a comedy first and foremost, so it’s more likely to make you laugh than cry.

As people begin to reorganize around a new, sightless way of life, hope is restored when twins are born with the ability to see. This miracle draws the ire of a jealous queen who sends her henchmen to abduct the children from their village.
On its surface, See seems to take inspiration from movies like A Quiet Place and Birdbox, but it has more in common with H. G. Wells’s 1904 novella “The Country of the Blind,» another story about a sightless society. The plot is very fast-paced, which sometimes makes it hard to follow, but there are enough action scenes to keep casual viewers entertained.
