I’ve got a MacBook running 10.5.8.
I’ve been through the troubleshooting points and have established the following:
• it’s not an application-specific problem: the iSight camera doesn’t work in either PhotoBooth or Skype
• the camera is recognized when I set up a different user profile so it’s not user-specific either
• the camera is recognized in the system profiler
• the problem is not resolved when I reset the SMC or the PRAM
Is there anything I can do? It seems to be some sort of system problem, not a hardware one.

If it works in Skype in a different Mac User Account (Or any other app in that Mac User Account) but does not work in the regular Mac User Account you use on your Mac then it is User Specific.
In this case we would suggest deleting the .plists involved.
In the case of Photo Booth this is a specific one (and only one)
iChat has several .plist but only the com.apple.ichat.plist one itself has any info about the camera.
I don’t use Skype but I am sure it has only one .plist
The System Profiler will see the camera (or Not) whichever User Account you log in to.
If you only checked the System Profiler in the other User Account you will need to do further testing.
If it is All Apps in All Users but still shows up in System Profiler I would download an Install the COMBO version of the Last OS Update you did. (It can be run over what you have installed already).
This can often «Fix» hard to trace faults where you may be looking for one corrupt System side file.

Thanks for this suggestion. I downloaded and installed the most recent 10.5.8 update I could find:
and then updated using software update.
No change, I’m afraid: neither Skype nor Photo Booth can see the camera when I’m in my main user account.

The Combo Download will open further if you double Click the .dmg
You should then have an Apple Package icon.
Double click this and it will open the Installer.
From there it will look like any other App install.
Software Updates keeps «Receipts» and checks these with what is available On line and not with anything on your Desktop or Downloads folder.
I am not sure if you ran both or tried things as I suggest you may have done here.

Yes, I didn’t have any problem with installing the comboupdate.I then ran software update. No luck, though, with the iSightcamera problem. Do you think running ‘repair disk’ from the DiskUtility (using a system disc) might get to the corrupt file?
Jul 11, 2011 1:31 AM
Using the Trouble Shooting Article normally helps pin it down to either a user or an Every app problem.
Resetting the SMC/PMU usually resolves the system (Profiler) not seeing the camera.
«Doing the COMBO» usually resolves most other things.
Using Disk Utility on the Install Disk is not going to do anything.
It has the info about what the Preferences should be for everything as it was Installed.
You have probably updated the OS several tiems since then.
This why Disk Utility on the computer should be used as it can access any Changed Preferences specifically created by any Update (mostly security but also other updates).
I would try this next http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2472
The article says it effects iMovie but I have seen it effect iChat.
Remember to Restart the computer afterwards. (this item runs at computer start up so deleting it does not change the current state of the computer or the hardware it should be picking up).
After that it would be a trip to the Store or a Recognised Apple Service centre.

Brett- slight correction. The built in iSight camera in the iMac G5 CAN record video.
I have been doing so with Quicktime from the first day I bought the Quicktime pro reg key from apple.
I believe there are free alternatives elsewhere as well.
Dec 5, 2005 8:14 PM
The built in iSight on my new imac seems to be very
dark compared with the normal isight i have. Why is
this?
I don’t have a free standing iSight, just the built in, but I maybe it has a bigger objective lens which would allow in more light. I can find the tech specs for the free standing iSight, it has a 1/4 inch CCD, but I could not find that info for the built in camera.
How is your ambient light, are you backlit? I can get a decent image with just the 60 watt desk light and the screen light.
Dec 5, 2005 8:23 PM
There are many windows in the background of where I have my computer positioned. Even with the blinds drawn the backlight still casues the subjectto be very dark and backlit. Is there a way to adjust the camera exposure manually to compensate for the light in the room? Or do I need to buy iGlasses when it is updated to work with the built-in iSight?

I have just been experimenting with lighting on my iMac iSight. What I found is that with the screen brightness set at normal, you get a washed out, slightly blueish looking picture. However if you download a small utility called «Brightness Control,» you can control the brightness of the «flash» of the screen much better than with the Monitor Preference Panel alone. With the brightness turned about half way, I was able to get slightly warmer pictures that are not washed out. In fact using this method, I get it just about perfect in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip about iGlasses. However, it may work with the FW add-on version of iSight mounted on a Powerbook. It doesn’t seem to work well with the iMac with built-in iSight. I can set how I want the picture to look, but when the button is pushed the default settings take over, the screen flashes and the picture comes out the way Apple, in its corporate wisdom, thinks it should look. In other words, blueish and washed out.

Question: Q: Built in iSight
iChat does not recognize my built in iSight. Every other program on my computer that uses the camera, however does recognize it. It worked fine 2 weeks ago. I have tried to reset the SMC but does not seem to help.
I am currently deployed and have no way of calling for help or taking it in to an Apple store.

If the SMC reset did not work try a PRAM reset.
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down APPLE( or ⌘ ) ALT+PR Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

It didn’t restart the computer but it did reset the camera. So, thanks. This should be the solution that Mac uses. There have been several discussions on this same thing and the only solution that has seemed to work is this one.
once again, thanks.

I’ve got the same problem but none of the fixes have worked. The camera appears in the system profiler, works with photo booth, etc.
Version 4.0.8 (619) The iChat «enable camera» under the AUDIO tab is grayed-out with the words «camera enabled». There is no radio button next to the option. The program says «there’s no camera attached to this computer». And when I go to «change my own picture» the message says «camera is shut.
Have done the whole laundry list of attempted fixes SCM, PR, Trashed Plist, etc. nothing works. Any other ideas ?

Welcome to Discussions, HDDP431
One of the relevant suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 will get it working.
If your iSight works with any app in any user account you test, your problem is software related.
If not, the reset suggestion often restores function to built-in iSights.
If your System Profiler still does not recognize your built-in iSight as a USB device after trying all other suggestions, you likely have a hardware problem that will require professional help from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The camera does appear as a mounted USB device in Sys Prof. It does work with all other apps. but iChat. So, I’ll assume this is software related. Perhaps I have a corrupted version of the program on my installer disc. Can you forward me a link to replace Version 4.0.8 (619) via email
Thanks in advance.

For benefit of other readers, I would post the response here if I had one, but I know of no link to replace Version 4.0.8 (619) via email. Instead, reinstall iChat and use your Mac’s > Software Update. to update iChat to the most current version.
Moreover, the likelihood that your installer disk works but contains a damaged iChat app seems unimaginably small to me. Because your iChat works with all other apps you tested in multiple user accounts, if iChat ever worked for you in the past, I think it much more likely that one or more of the QuickTime, system, or application files that iChat uses may have become damaged, lost, or corrupted in some way. With hundreds of thousands of files, in OS X, finding which would be impossible for me, so I recommend reinstalling.
If you want to reinstall iChat but need help, see the user guide that came with your MBP. That manual contains instructions on how to restore your Mac’s bundled apps (including iChat.) Be sure to backup all important files on your Mac before you restore/reinstall. If restoring the apps does not correct the problem, follow the instructions for restoring the OS files, too. One of those restore options will likely get things sorted for you.
If not, my only remaining suggestion is that you contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

Thank you for the rapid and detailed responses. I’ve had the MBP since early July and tested the iSight camera with iChat back then and it didn’t work, but I got too busy with work to trouble shoot it. But, I now have a few weeks to catch-up on / fix stuff. I pulled the install discs out today, never had a need for them since the MBP was fully loaded at the factory.
LOW AND BEHOLD they are for the 15″ MBP not my 17″. HMMM HE SAYS. Could this be the root of all this iSight / iChat evil ? Could the lovely little Thaiwanese lady have installed the wrong software at the factory ? Or, are the 2 interchangeable ?
I think I shall contact Apple and have them send me the correct install discs before I attempt to replace the iChat program. But my guess is that this is the culprit.

(1) Checking with Apple is a good idea. Doing so will give an authoritative answer to your good question.
(2) However, based on your latest info, because you never got iChat to work, I expect your Mac’s software disks are not the problem.
If your Mac is running Leopard (OS X 10.5.x), use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
(3) Then test again to see if iChat works now. If not, I would suggest you reinstall iChat or the OS as I suggested in my earlier post and test to see if that resolves your problem.
(4) If iChat now works and shows a «Video» menu where the old «Audio» menu was but you still cannot make iChat work, your problem may be caused by configuration issues.
Take a look at this tutorial to make sure you are following the startup procedures:
(5) If you have problems somewhere along this process, post back and tell us how far you get before you get stuck. Also let us know whether you are connected via ethernet or wireless and whether your problem is the same if you take your MBP to another location and try iChat via a different internet connection such as a library, internet cafe, computer store, school, work, etc.
(6) Finally, if you need to post back for more clarification or help, please specifically state *what version of Mac OS X* you are using and specify *which of the suggestions I have already made you have tried*.

Jim, so here’s the update on the MBP iSight camera not working with Ichat, and never has since the purchase of the MBP in July. I am running OS X 10.5.8 with 500GB HD that has a 50GB Bootcamp / Parallels partition. And version 4.0.8 (619) of iChat and QuickTime Player Pro ver. 7.6.1 (474.3) with QuickTime ver. 7.6.1 (1292.5).
To recap our earlier discussions, my built-in MBP iSight camera functions with ALL programs but NOT iChat and it appears in my system profiler under USB Devices as the following;
Host Controller Location: Built In USB
Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBEHCI
PCI Device ID: 0x0aa6
PCI Revision ID: 0x00b1
PCI Vendor ID: 0x10de
Bus Number: 0x24
Product ID: 0x8507
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 4.19
Serial Number: 8H95W03SJ6V23A00
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Location ID: 0x24400000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
I have completed ALL of the recommended FIXES listed in EVERY Apple Support Document I could find and those listed on this Support Forum. Reset PRAM, Reset SMC, Completely Deleted & Reinstalled IChat and all of it’s system / sub-system files. I reinstalled OS X twice (Archive and Install) NOT (Erase and Install) and nothing has repaired the problem.
I have followed all of the set-up procedures for iChat on the MBP and here is what I observed happens. When iChat is launched / Console launched / Activity Monitor launched,
*Console message appears as;*
11/24/09 6:20:19 AM iChat[411] Error loading /Users/apple/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Contents/MacO S/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer: dlopen(/Users/apple/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Conten ts/MacOS/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Users/apple/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Contents/MacO S/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer: mach-o, but wrong architecture
*Activity Monitor messages show*;
411 iChat apple 0.0 9 26.57 MB 979.89 MB Intel
211 iChatAgent apple 0.0 5 5.87 MB 858.25 MB Intel
On the iChat Menu Bar under iChat / Change My Picture, the «Buddy Picture» window appears as a blank screen with the «Camera Icon» at the bottom in black, when I click the «Camera Icon» the window changes to a black window with an image of an X’d out camera and the words «Camera is Shut»
Back on the iChat menu bar when I scroll the tab that says AUDIO down to the 3 line sources section it appears as follow; and NEVER changes to VIDEO
(CHECK MARKED) *»Microphone Enabled»*
(GRAYED OUT, NO CHECK MARK) «Camera Enabled»
(CHECK MARKED) *»Screen Sharing»*
When I bring up the iChat window, on the upper menu bar the only icon that appears on the right is the «telephone» icon, and when I click on this icon a sub-window pops-up that says *»There is no Camera Attached to this Computer»*
To test things further, I have a G5 desktop PPC running 10.5.8 also which has an external USB RocketFish 2.0 MP Autofocus Webcam and the identical versions of OS, and iChat, but has Quicktime Player ver. 7.6.4 (518.35) QuickTime ver. 7.6.4 (1327.73) and the system works fine / perfectly with all programs including iChat on my G5.
I attached the RocketFish USB webcam to my MBP and used a little shareware program called iUSBCam and the RocetFish camera works fine with PhotoBooth, iMovie, QuickTime etc. but still nothing with iChat.
Based on the console reports, and this is where I need your opinion, does this appear to be a driver error in the version of QT I have installed on the MBP ? Should I try to locate the DL of the older version of QT I have on my G5 and install it on my MBP ?
My next test is to start my MBP in «Target Mode» and see if my G5 can access the built-in iSight thru iChat. Don’t know if that’ll work but it’s worth a try !
Your opinion on the console messages is greatly appreciated. Also, where can i find a list of all the associated QT files
