How (and when) to clear app cache or data on Android

Every Android smartphone has an application manager that you can get to through the settings menu. It’s usually in the top-level somewhere, though it can vary a little by phone. But once you get to it, you’re at the heart of the matter. This area is where you can see every application that’s installed on your phone or tablet. And it’s a handy place to clean things up a bit should they go wonky.

The app cache (and how to clear it)

As you use applications, they start storing files to reference later. How to delete app cache for all apps in Android M?

Is there an option to delete the cache of all Apps or certain Apps in Android M ?

Seems like most ways don’t work anymore in Android M.

As a reference I used this Code out of this discussion : Android: Clear Cache of All Apps?

Combined with this permission

This Code works fine on devices lower than Android 6.0. But on devices with Android 6.0 it results in this exception

There is an open source cleaner on GitHub, which stopped development with this reason:

Partial incompatibility with Android 6.0 and newer

Starting with Android 6.0, CLEAR_APP_CACHE permission seems to be no longer available to regular applications and since this permission is required for cleaning of internal cache, Cache Cleaner is not able to clean internal cache on Android 6.0 and newer. However, cleaning of external cache is still supported.

Is there really no way, to delete App Cache on devices with Android M ?

How does the Google Setting App handle it ? It can’t be the new method:

because I think it does not delete the Cache of certain apps, but of enough apps to clear the expected ram size. But the Settings app can clear the Cache of certain apps

UPDATE Like the excepted answer explains, there seems to be no way to delete tha App Cache without root on Devices with Android M and above. But I will post it here if I find a way.

How to clear the cache on your Android phone to make it run faster

Clear cache from third-party apps

Clearing cache is a quick and easy way to free up space and (hopefully) fix a misbehaving app. Clearing app cache will not delete app data like account information.

Here’s how to clear app cache:

1. Go to the Settings menu on your device.

2. Tap Storage .

3. Tap Internal Storage under Device Storage.

4. Tap Cached data .

5. Tap OK when a dialog box appears asking if you’re sure you want to clear all app cache.

Clearing app cache will not delete app data like account information. App data, like account information, can be deleted from the same menu — proceed with caution if you decide to do so.

Note: Phones without SD card storage will not be given a choice to select between internal storage or SD card as shown in the above screenshots.

How often you should clear cache

You may find it helpful to clear cache periodically, but a regular cache clearing schedule isn’t required. If you find you’re routinely clearing cache to free up space, you may consider removing unused apps or archiving stored video and photos in the cloud. Installing a high volume microSD card is another option to address phone storage needs.

How to delete other applications cache from our android app?

I’m trying to develop an android app that could erase others application cache data, I tried to browse through all blogs but none of them worked for me, I can able to clear my application’s cache by the following code

I changed my code to

I want to clear other application’s cache, can any body please help me, please correct me if I’m wrong, Thanks in advance.

This API is no more supported in API 23, that is Marshmallow. Permission is deprecated in Marshmallow.

But there is another way by asking run time permission for Accessories. Try app All-in-one Toolbox from play store. This app is able to clear other apps cache even in Marshmallow. Then it should be possible for us to do so.

I am researching on this. Once I found the solution, I will update the answer. Thanks.

I used the following code and now I’m able to clear all application’s cache without rooting, it’s working perfectly for me,

And also create a pacakge in your src folder with the name android.content.pm inside that package create a file in the name IPackageDataObserver.aidl and paste the following code to it

and in your manifest make sure you used the following code

Cache is not just one thing. For each app there is a cache folder in the system data folders and one cache folder for every storage partition available (one in device’s internal sd card and if there is an external sd card then there is one there too)

So to clear the cache in the system data folders you do this

Because you don’t have access to the system folders to delete them by your self in a non rooted device so you politely ask Android to do it for you.

To clear the cache in the non-system data folders you do this

Android: Clear Cache of All Apps?

In an Android app I am making, I want to be able to programmatically clear the cache of all of the apps on the device. This has been asked many times before: Clearing app cache programmatically? Reflecting methods to clear Android app cache Clear another applications cache and everyone says it’s not possible without root.

However, this is clearly not the case. If you look at the apps App Cache Cleaner, History Eraser, 1Tap Cleaner, Easy History Cleaner, and countless other similar apps in the Google Play (all of which don’t require root) you will realize they can all do this. Therefore, it IS possible to do, but I just cannot find any public examples how to do this.

Does anyone know what all of those apps are doing?

Here’s a way to do it that doesn’t require IPackageDataObserver.aidl :

You will need to have this in your manifest:

This requests that Android clear enough cache files so that there is 8GB free. If you set this number high enough you should achieve what you want (that Android will delete all of the files in the cache).

The way this works is that Android keeps an LRU (Least Recently Used) list of all the files in all application’s cache directories. When you call freeStorage() it checks to see if the amount of storage (in this case 8GB) is available for cache files. If not, it starts to delete files from application’s cache directories by deleting the oldest files first. It continues to delete files until either there are not longer any files to delete, or it has freed up the amount of storage you requested (in this case 8GB).
