com.apple.hiservices-xpcservice (Not Responding)
Previously discussed in beta:
This process stops responding every day it seems, I’m running 10.14.3 (18D109)
When the process hangs, its Open Files and Ports include the following:
Those are not open when the service is running (before it hangs)
Would like to know how frequently this hangs for everyone else and get steps to troubleshoot if possible.
I am having the same issue with a new 13″ MBP (2020 M1 Big Sur) with a very lean system build. The problem is intermittent and difficult to reproduce, so the following may not be correct, but I think it might only be happening when both of the following are true: (a) upon wake from sleep and (b) when connected to my external display (an Apple Thunderbolt Display).
As the Hiservices framework contains interfaces for internet config, I wonder if it could be related to switching network interface from wifi to Display Ethernet.
I believe I have ruled out anything having to do with Date & Time, as I have «Set time zone automatically» turned off, together with the applicable Location access in Security & Privacy.
Other things I had initially suspected that I have ruled out so far:
Any apps with Accessibility access;SteerMouse Manager;Bartender 4;Carbon Copy Cloner’s daemon;MS Exchange calendars; andParallels 16.5.
I also have an older 15″ MBP (2018 Big Sur, Intel obviously) with a nearly identical software build and it does not have the issue. And a 13″ MBA (2020 M1) which also does not have the issue. I am completely baffled and I am seriously considering erasing the 13″ MBP and starting over with a fresh copy of Big Sur.
I hope this helps and we can get to the bottom of it.

Question: Q: What is «com.apple.WebKit.Networking.xpc» doing in my Firewall options — allow incoming connections?
I periodically check things around my system. Today I discovered an entry in my Firewall Options that I don’t recognize and do not remember ever seeing before —
com.apple.WebKit.Networking.xpc Allow incoming connections
I have found some discussions (here in Apple Communities) that say it’s part of Safari .
But when I google «com.apple.WebKit.Networking.xpc» I see posts that say it’s a serious bit of malware that hijacks browsers.
Can anyone shed any light on what this really is?

So . is it a legitimate/necessary part of Safari . or is it malware?
(BTW, I have malwarebytes and when I scan it says my system is clean. I’ll also run Etrecheck and see what it says.)

Post a report from this please.
EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.
There is also Malwarebytes…
That being said I have it on every OS version since at least 10.8.

EtreCheck Link above should read as: http://etrecheck.com

It is not malware.

I’d say it’s OK, what does a get Info on it report?
Not only used for Safari, but also Mail, Messages, AppStore, iCloud. anything on a Mac that uses Internet.
Mar 20, 2019 8:52 PM
The file is located in /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices
Here is what GetInfo reported:
The permissions are:
system — Read & Write
wheel — Read Only
everyone — Read Only
ps. It appears to be an Apple product (unless it’s possible to spoof information that GetInfo would report on a file).

Regarding the site hotvirusmalwareremoval.com — the name itself made me suspicious, so I googled it and NEARLY ALL the hits were pages on the site itself. I could not find ANY third-party reviews of the site, its products or services; and there is nothing in any Wiki about it. This makes me very suspicious of the site.
In addition, if com.apple.WebKit.Networking.xpc is in fact an Apple/macOS component why is this site making extraordinary claims that it’s «a dangerous computer infection which hijacks your internet browsers» and then offers steps to remove it?
I understand you probably can’t answer that question, but the entire situation surrounding that site makes me very suspicious that it could be a scam and source of malware. There have been plenty of other rogue sites that claim to clean up your Mac, remove viruses, etc. that leave you off much worse than when you started . Mac Cleaner/macPaw, anyone, for example?

Question: Q: com.apple.iCloudHelper.xpc wants to use the keychain. Why? Is this normal?
Just upgraded to Mavericks and I keep getting a notification asking me to enter my keychain password for com.apple.iCloudHelper.xpc. Is this legit or what?

It’s me again. I signed out of iCloud in the preferences section and that seemed to put a stop to the annoying password prompts. My laptop seems to be running much smoother now too. I’m not a big cloud user anyways, I prefer my own hardware for storage.

I have the same issue. It’s so annoying and I can’t find a way to stop it. I will sign out of iCloud to see if that stop the password asking every few minutes.

I’m having the same issue and there is no further explaination under the question mark. I do use clould and this continual popup is very annoying. What’s the deal with this??

I had the same issue, I found out that the icloud account user-password was saved in a different keychain (not the login one..), so I found it and then moved it in the login keychain. I also found out that the login keychain is unlocked, always. that’s probably why it does not ask permission now.. so youcan either change the settings of your keychain (not to lock automatically after a certain time), or move it to your login keychain. this worked for me. Hope it helps!

Just like any software or hardware LAN or WAN accessible service that needs to access information in your login account in order to provide the requested services, a key in your login keychain must be available for the service or else the service will have to ask you for a password to provide the requested service.
The problem is, most people don’t realize how the keychain system works, and they simply enter their password when prompted at the time they are requesting the service. Then later, when they remove the service from their keychain or change their login password, the service prompts the user for the new password. Also, many people forget which services they orginally requested and that makes it seem like the services had been secretly entering their login account and gaining access to information.
But the keychain access allows the application to access its own keychain, or that keychain that it created in your login account when you first set up the service.
I am just now learning about this, but it seems that the keychain system (built on Kerberos protocols) is very much similar to the file and directory permissions system. The difference is that the file and directory permissions is for a single computer, while the keychain system provides security over any kind of local or global network.
I have been glossing over learning about keychain services, as I used to do for file permissions, but now I see both of these security standards are critical and important for maintaining proper function and security over any kind of computer system or network.

Question: Q: Issue with com.apple.xpc.launchd (org.postfix.master)
Since upgrading to High Sierra, I been having regular crashes on my 27″ Late 2012 iMac. I looked at the system logs in Console and found hundreds and hundreds of the following lines:
iMac com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master): Service only ran for 1 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 9 seconds.
iMac com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[11792]): Service exited with abnormal code: 1
I tried using the Terminal command ‘launchctl list | grep launchd’ but this only picks out Safari and Mail, I’m not sure either are to blame? Anyone know what ‘org.postfix.master’ is?
Any help would be much appreciated.

So I’ve found org.postfix.master in the System -> Library -> LaunchDaemons folder with the content (see below). Looks like it might be something to do with Mail but I have no idea what that service does?

I’m also have this issue, it is slowing down my late 2013 iMac which is still running ElCap — getting beachballs and programmes ‘freezing’ for 5-10 seconds, even pasteing text into Textedit can result in a beachball. There is no obvious disk read/write, network use, CPU use or memory use going on when this occurs — they system seems to be completely untaxed at the time (running iStatMenu).
My console to has the following two lines looping every 10 seconds:

Question: Q: A «com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]» procedure which is carried out every minute
I have had a problem for quite some time with the result, that I disconnected my Buffalo NAS.
Each minute I got a message, which I had to accept. Now I can se why. In the Console under System Log Requests the following is stated each minute:
«com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (jp.buffalo.NASPower) Service only ran for 10 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 50 seconds.»
The Buffalo NAS Navigator 2 programme is manually removed from my computer more than one time. Buffalo have no uninstall function, and a «launch request» apparently is not removed, our is removed but not registered in another function on the PC.
I have seen the other remarks concerning this problem in this discussion forum. I have checked, if there are files with the name «com.apple.xpc.launchd» or something with «jp.buffalo.NASPower» in the directories
What on earth do I do to get rid of this problem, so I can install the programme Buffalo NAS Navigator 2 again ?

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

I have used the EtreCheck system and enclose the report below. When I look back again, part of the problem may be also can be transfer of data from my Old MacBook Pro to the New one covered by the report, or upgrade to OS X El Capitan (the least possible, I think). Concerning this please se the Problem Description in the report.
There are also a failed Launch Agent, and may be other interesting stuff. I look forward to hearing from you.

Problem: Other problem
Description:
A launch agent are running each minute, which is shown as this in the Console:
«com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (jp.buffalo.NASPower) Service only ran for 10 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 50 seconds.»
This refers to a NAS hardware, that I have had installed, but has disconnected (1/2 year ago) because of a remark each minute, which I had to accept. The remark on the screen was only shown, when the Buffalo NAS App “NAS Navigator 2” was running. But I can see now, that a procedure is carried out anyway each minute on my MAC.
In December 2014 I changed from my old MACBook Pro to this MACBook pro, and transferred all programmes to this (also the NAS App). After that I have also updated to OS X El Capitan, and I have also deleted the NAS Navigator 2 App and installed it again without a Buffalo uninstaller (don’t exist to my knowledge) more than one time.
What creates the problem I don’t know. The problem existed when the App was installed and when I used the NAS disk, and the procedure is carried out to day after the App is removed. What do I do to quit the procedure carried out each minute, which I think have given the remark when the App was installed and when I used the NAS disk?
Is the problem the result of
1) transfer of programmes from the Old Mac to the New Mac
2) update to OS X El Capitan
3) installation and uninstall of the Buffola App without an uninstaller?
