Learn how to sync music, movies, and more using iTunes on your Mac or PC.
If you’re using macOS Mojave or earlier or a Windows PC, use iTunes to sync content to your devices. Before you use iTunes to sync content to your iOS or iPadOS device, consider using iCloud, Apple Music, or similar services to keep content from your Mac or PC in the cloud. What you can sync with iTunes

iTunes features might vary by country or region.
Sync or remove content using iTunes
- Open iTunes and connect your device to your computer with a USB cable.
- Click the device icon in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window. Learn what to do if you don’t see the icon.
- From the list under Settings on the left side of the iTunes window, click the type of content that you want to sync or remove. * To turn syncing on for a content type, select the checkbox next to Sync.
- Select the checkbox next to each item that you want to sync.
- Click the Apply button in the lower-right corner of the window. If syncing doesn’t start automatically, click the Sync button.
* You can only sync your device with one iTunes library at a time. If you see a message that your device is synced with another iTunes library, your device was previously connected to another computer. If you click «Erase and Sync» in that message, all content of the selected type on your device will be erased and replaced with content from this computer.
Sync your content using Wi-Fi
After you set up syncing with iTunes using USB, you can set up iTunes to sync to your device with Wi-Fi instead of USB.
- Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable, then open iTunes and select your device. Learn what to do if your device doesn’t appear on your computer.
- Click Summary on the left side of the iTunes window.
- Select «Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi.»
- Click Apply.
When the computer and the device are on the same Wi-Fi network, the device appears in iTunes. The device syncs automatically whenever it’s plugged in to power and iTunes is open on the computer.

If you can’t connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services
Here’s what to do if you see a «Cannot connect» message. These steps also work if the app won’t load anything or stops while content is downloading.
Try these steps if you can’t connect to any of these apps or services:
- App Store
- iTunes Store
- Game Center
- Apple Books app
- Apple Music app
- Apple Fitness+
Check the system status page
Check Apple’s System Status page to see if there’s an outage for a service in your country or region.
Make sure that your device is connected to the internet
Use any web browser to connect to any website. If nothing loads, use another device on the same network to see if it can connect to any website. If no other devices can access the internet, turn off your Wi-Fi router, then turn it on again to reset it. If you still can’t connect to your Wi-Fi network, contact your internet provider for more help. If only your first device can’t connect to the internet, get help with Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac.
If you use cellular service to connect to the internet on your iPhone or iPad, make sure that you have cellular data turned on for the app that you’re using. To do this, open the Settings app, tap Cellular, then turn on Cellular Data.
Update your software
Update to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, or software for your non-Apple device. Then try to connect again.
Check the date and time
Make sure that the date and time on your device are set correctly for your time zone.
On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Open the Settings app. Tap General, then tap Date & Time. Get more help with date and time.
On your Mac: Open System Preferences, then choose Date & Time.
On your Apple TV: Go to Settings > General > Date and Time.
If the date and time are incorrect, update them or turn on the option to set date and time automatically.
If you still can’t connect
If you tried all of the above steps and you still can’t connect, contact Apple Support.
If you see a different connection alert message
Use the steps above if you see one of these error messages:
- «Cannot connect to the iTunes Store. An unknown error has occurred.»
- «We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.»

If your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
If you connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, learn what to do.
If your computer doesn’t recognize your connected device, you might see an unknown error or a «0xE» error. Follow these steps and try to connect your device again after each step.
- Make sure that your iOS or iPadOS device is turned on, unlocked, and on the Home screen.
- Check that you have the latest software on your Mac or Windows PC. If you’re using iTunes, make sure you have the latest version.
- If you see a Trust this Computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust. If you can’t unlock your device because you forgot your passcode, find out what to do.

Little lost gem!
I used this app years ago and even forgot I had it installed. And then came on a use case I’ve wanted for years — and this does it! Beautifully.
Among other things, I use Remote to control the music playing on my main Mac through AirPlay to my main entertainment system. Now I can listen to the same stream in the office, family room, and outside and am free to roam about the yard without worrying about WiFi dropping out. And I still have complete control over what is playing (and volume and more) from my iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch! Can’t wait to pair some friends phones so my Mac can serve as a jukebox at the next party! I’ve always wanted to do that!
The only thing I wish it did that it doesn’t do is allow me to Add to my library! (I think I get why and it’s not too much to go over to Music and do it and then come back.)

After this latest update and MacOS update, working swimmingly. I love that my whole house AirPlay Setup works as designed once again!
Old rating: Had I known about the iTunes remote breaking when this Catalina upgrade came about, it would have been a deal breaker. I’ve had this app for years and used it regularly to stream music to all my airplay speakers. Worked wonderfully.
I put Catalina on my mac, and it’s broken. Apple would be wise to fix, with all the issues with the iOS and macOS, which they absurdly and uncharacteristically botched, and the anger in the community over this among other “losses”, which outweigh the “enhancements”. Apple, you were better than this.
Missing key feature
This is one of the most used apps I have on my IOS devices, using it to control a headless Mac mini music server. There are no iTunes alternatives available I’m aware off, as such it is important to me that it continues to remain relevant. For the most part it works flawlessly with a local music library, what it doesn’t do is quite astonishing, it doesn’t allow selecting music from Apple Music. If I choose an album or song in Apple Music using Remote Desktop from a Mac and then start iTunes Remote on iPad it appears in now playing and functions normally so it seems feasible. Please Apple update this app with Apple Music functionality, don’t make me email Tim Cook over such an obvious shortcoming.
Updated: Apple is rolling out lossless HiRez Apple Music soon, yet this their only remote app for controlling the Music App still cannot see any of the Apple Music streaming stuff. While Roon and Audirvana’s remote apps can do just that with their apps controlling HiRez streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal.

I am frustrated. My son is autistic. The iphone is critical for him. He has been trying for two weeks to get past the «iphone is disabled, connect to itunes.» All he gets is the emergency phone number pad. He has asked for help from apple and others. He turned the problem over to me today. Though I am a mac person from way back, I have never used an iphone. I went on itunes, put in the information he gave me re: user name and password. Apparently this isn’t right, but this is all he remembers. I’ve read the instructions for going into the DFU mode, but how would I get to the «home» button, thanks, budinsky.

Open iTunes on computer, connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons on iPhone until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. This usually takes about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. Restore the iPhone Firmware.

Well my daughter locked up phone pretty good! «Disabled Connect to Itunes» so I did but it was only giving me the option to restore. I tried right clicking and then backing up and it still did not let me enter the password. Then I decided to see if it would let me Sync it, WOOHOO it worked. All my text messages starting coming in and it was allowing me to re-enter my password. So your hint did help some, it certainly got me on the right path. Thank you!

Hey, I REALLY need help. ive been stupid and forgot my password on my phone after recently changing it. ive tried that many times ive disabled my phone. i have the recent update of itunes and computer is all up to date. ive put my phone into recovery mode and connected to itunes, gone to restore, accepted all i need to accepts and then nothing. no progress bars on phone or on computer, just a box in the bottom saying done? help me. i need my phone for work purposes.

Well, my iPhone 4S got fixed by itself after about 5 hours being disabled. A «friend» was trying to break into it. Here’s what I did. I connected it to the iTunes computer I always connect it to. My only option was to restore it, but I had not backed it up for months, so I decided to at least copy my pictures. I was using iPhone Browser to copy all my pictures (about 10.5GB) so I left it alone and went to watch TV while copying. When I came back to my computer to check the copy progress I checked my iPhone as well and the DISABLED message was gone and I was able to login again! 🙂 YEAH! So I guess it’s just a matter of time, from the moment it got locked till’ it was good again was about 5 hours. Anyone with the same experience please confirm so we know what the fix is. Thanks!

My wife had this same problem and had to do a restore however she never synced to itunes and would’ve lost all her 300+ pics. Called Apple tech for suggestions and they said there is absolutely nothing you can do to recover the pics before a restore. Well DEAD WRONG. enter your phone in recovery mode while connected to a pc. Then go to computer and depending on what Windows program, mine said Photo Stream, and I was able to drag and drop all the pics onto my pc. Not sure if it would do the same with a mac. Hope this helps others with the same issue.

My iphone was disabled so i connected it into my computer and clicked the «update» because my ios was outdated. after it was updated successfully via itunes, it rebooted and the apple logo appeared then «iPhone is disabled, connect to itunes» still appeared with plain black background. i tried connecting it into my computer but itunes says that it is locked and i needed to unlock it but i cant. i tried to hold on to the home button to turn it off but i cant. it’s stuck. help me please.

This is what finally worked for me:
* plugged in my Iphone to machine (Mac) with iTunes running
* within itunes, right clicked on the iphone icon in the left column (i had to show sidebar to see the left column, btw)
* after right clicking, i selected to «Transfer Purchases»
* once that process began, it asked for my log in (within iTunes) and itunes/computer started to download stuff to my computer from my phone—-stuff that i had bought on my phone
* i checked my phone at that point (screen was black but it came awake) — and after a day of being disabled, i was able to log into my phone again finally. no data lost!!

This will erase the device and its passcode.
- Disconnect all cables from your device.
- Hold down the Sleep/Wake button, then «slide to power off» to turn off your device.
- Press and hold the Home button and plug the device into your computer. If your device doesn’t turn on automatically, turn it on. Don’t release the Home button.
- Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
- If iTunes doesn’t open automatically, open it. iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode.
- Click OK. Then restore the device.
If your device doesn’t go into recovery mode, try steps 1–4 again.

When I hold down the sleep button nothing happens, also when I connect the phone a dialog box appears «iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.»
