[Fix] YouTube for Android: Connection to Server Lost, Touch to Retry

After I updated my Xperia Z to the latest Android Jelly Bean version last month, I frequently started getting an error message on the YouTube app. As shown in the screenshot below, the error message read, “Connection to server lost. Touch to retry”. Even though I was sure that I was connected to the internet, nothing happened even after tapping the screen multiple times. However, to be sure that I was connected to the internet I opened the Google News on my browser and I got the latest update right on my screen. Even the YouTube app was able to search for videos and load comments and suggestions, but showed the error only while playing the video.

Understanding the Problem

As I was not sure what the problem might be, I searched for it at some popular Android forums to see if other users faced similar issues. Well, there were many who claimed to have the same problem, but there was no solution in sight. The only thing I read in most of the posts was to restart the phone and try again, or to pull out the battery to do a power recycle. However, none of the two fixes worked out for me and I was stuck on the same error message.

It wasn’t that I was completely clueless about this error. Thanks to my years in engineering college (yeah, I did end up studying in some of them), I knew that the problem was somehow related to the proxy settings of Android and the port of the app that connects to the video server was not able to make a connection (not going into the technical bit here).

So, after a few hours of troubleshooting, I was finally able to play the videos on my Android. There are two probable solutions to this problem, so lets have a look at them one after another.

Disable Ad Blocker

In the latest update of the Android version, if you have an ad-blocker activated on your device, somehow it affects the YouTube app. The app blocks the proxy ports that YouTube connects to fetch the video from the server. So once you disable the ad-blocker on your Android, you will be able to play the videos on your device without any problem. A simple reboot might be necessary for the settings take effect. If you are planning to uninstall the ad-blocker app, please remember to deactivate the settings prior to uninstallation.

However, the above fix is only applicable if your phone is rooted and you are using ad-blocker in it. In my case, my phone was not rooted (not allowed by the bootloader).

So I was only left with one option and that was to check the Wi-Fi advanced settings.

Disable Wi-Fi Manual Settings

The second thing you can do is to check the advance settings of your Wi-Fi connection. If the problem is what I think, you will see some proxy hostname and proxy port in there under the manual settings. Go to Settings in your Android -> Wi-Fi -> long-tap on the network you’re using and it will pop up a Modify Network Config option. Then you may or may not need to tap on Show advanced options depending on the phone you’re using. What we need to see is the status of Proxy settings and whether it is None or Manual.

All you need to do is ensure that Proxy settings is set as None and not Manual. That’s all, my best bet is that you will now be able to play the videos in the YouTube app.

Still Some Work Left

The fix worked on most of the devices I checked. However, in my case the settings keep reverting back and changes to manual every time I connect to a new Wi-Fi network. I am not sure if anyone else is facing similar problems with their phone’s Wi-Fi advanced settings. I am yet to discover a fix for this so if you’ve any solution in mind, do share them in the comments for everyone to see.

There are several reasons to cause this kind of failure in accessing YouTube on Android.

Let’s suppose that your Wi-Fi network or cellular connection works just well in streaming Google news or loading other comments and suggestions. You can try the following solutions which are workable for many users to fix YouTube connection to server lost on Android accordingly.

Related Articles:

Solution 1. Disable Ad Blocker

This is only applicable for those of you who have your phone rooted and Ad blocker installed on Android. It is very common for Android users to root their phone to gain more control and options and over your Android phone. Once you are sure that you have rooted your phone, it is easy to fix. All you need to do is to disable or delete Ad blocker that prevents proxy port that YouTube connects to fetch information and videos from the server. Let’s see how you should do.

1). Launch Ad blocker and disable it on Settings.

2). If you wish to completely delete Ad blocker, be sure to deactivate it first.

3). After disabling Ad blocker, a reboot is required to activate your order.

4) Launch YouTube to see whether you can play videos without any problem or not.

Solution 2. Change Wi-Fi Settings

The proxy settings of your Wi-Fi connection is the second potential of YouTube connection lost. YouTube fetch data and videos via port connecting to the server. Thus any improper connection to the server will lead to YouTube connection error. To get this revised, you should follow steps below:

STEP 1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, long press the Wi-Fi that your phone is connected to and a window will pop up for your action.

STEP 2. Under the pop-up menu, select Modify Network Config. Then tick off the checkbox of Show Advanced options on a window that appears. Then all you need to do is check whether Proxy settings are set to Manual or not. If yes, change it to None and exit as usual.

Solution 3. Log in YouTube with the Same Account in Google Play

Sometimes the difference of account you are using on YouTube with the one that you used to access to Google Play may prevent you from fetching YouTube data successfully. What you need to do is go to Google Play to check it out. And if it turns out that you’re using two different accounts, please log out YouTube account and log in again with the account you used in Google Play Store.

Solution 4. Uninstall and Reinstall YouTube App

The last option always is the reluctant action to take, at least I won’t choose that way. But if all above methods don’t work for you and you are very serious to fix YouTube connection of server lost on your Android phone, you can thoroughly uninstall and then reinstall YouTube.

Hello everyone, i would like to share my story with you all because i believe it would be of help.I just got over my divorce tussle that went on for almost two years November 2016,i filed for divorce because i knew she was cheating but i had no evidence to back up my claim.Long story cut short i decided to check online if i could have access to another person”s phone without touching or installing any software on it and i met this lady i was very shocked because i got all info including deleted ones.If you would like to get in touch with her, send her a mail via HACKERSUSAN78 ( a t ) – g m a i l – d o t – c o m . Thanks for helping me out..

I highly doubt that reinstalling the app will stop a server connection issue. It clearly isn’t phone related because this only happens with YouTube. I have never seen my Xfinity app do this.

However, what I did just notice is after I returned to YouTube after posting my comment the connection was back. I didn’t have to swipe the app and restart it like I normally would. So try going to a recent app then return to YouTube and see if the solves it or if it was the time I took to Google your article, read it then type my comment was what allowed the connection to fix itself.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It’ll help lots of users who are experiencing the same issue. It seems like that what you had was a temporary disconnection from YouTube server. So it fixed itself after a while. In fact, the connection-to-server-lost issue is not exclusive to YouTube; it has happened to Skype and many other apps and games. In some cases, it is app related and that’s why some users found it helpful to reinstall the app.

Youtube Fix | Connection to Server lost. Touch to Retry.

This is one of the YouTube bugs that’s affected to almost every android phone. Connection to server lost. Touch to retry .Well, it affected my phone two days back. And I started searching it over google and found that this was not any recent bug. It’s been for more than 3 to 4 months. Many forums came up with the fix. But, none worked for me. This problem causes only when you’re on WiFi. Some said keep touching the video screen, again and again, remove your google account and add it again, uninstall the YouTube updates and update it again and what not.

Well, on the factory version of the YouTube app videos played without any interruption.(ie. By uninstalling the updates). So, I thought of keep using the factory version. But, automatic updates always updated the app again. I got totally frustrated. And gave a last try and searched about this problem on the YouTube itself.(Of course using PC.) Thinking some intelligent humble guy would have solved it. And Thanks to God! There was a guy with the perfect solution.

The FIX: (That Worked for me)

Follow Below given Steps:

  1. Open the Wifi settings and long tap on the Wifi network you’re currently using.
  2. Select Modify Network Configuration.
  3. There tick the “Show advanced option”.
  4. Under IP settings change from DHCP to Static.
  5. Then scroll down to DNS1 and change the address to 8.8.8.8 and DNS2 to 8.8.4.4
  6. Tap Save and you’re done!

Understanding the Fix

Actually, the IP address 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are of Google’s Public DNS. By default whenever you connect to Wifi your ISP’s selected DNS(Domain Name Systems) server is applied. Well, I’ll explain in short about DNS if the above lines bounced off your head.

Domain Name system or Domain Name server. This is a server where all the domain names are stored in the form of IP address. So, your ISP(Internet service provider) was pinging the default DNS server that “hey man I want to access youtube.com to play a video”. But, for some reason, the server was not letting your ISP access youtube.com. Or maybe Google had blocked youtube.com in that server to not let anyone access it and if someone want to access use Google DNS.

By the way, there’s another Public DNS called Open DNS. I applied their IP address and it worked ( DNS1:208.67.222.222 and DNS2: 208.67.220.220). So, I don’t think so Google DNS is only needed.

Above Fix Didn’t work? Try This One.

If the above fix didn’t work try clearing the cache and data of Youtube app and Google play services. Follow below steps:

  1. Disconnect from WiFi/ Mobile Data.
  2. Open Settings > Application Manager > YouTube.
  3. First tap on Force Stop, then clear data and clear cache.
  4. Do the same thing with Google play services. Scroll up and execute the second step again.
  5. After completing restart your device.
  6. Connect again to WiFi / Mobile data.

Fix #2: Wipe Cache Partition

If the above fix didn’t work you should probably now wipe the system cache. System cache is the temporary data that system stores for your application so that they can load faster and in an optimized way. In order to do so, you’ll have to perform wipe cache partition. The setting is available in your phone’s system recovery.

Now, each phone has different methods of getting into Recovery mode. I’ll show here only for Samsung devices. If you’ve got the different device – just Google -“How to get into recovery mode [mobile manufacturer]”.

To get into recovery mode in Samsung devices, first, switch off your phone. Now, press Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button all together and Hold it. After 2-3 seconds booting screen should come up. Now, leave the power button and keep Volume up + Home Button on hold until you get into Recovery mode. That’ll just take 2-3 seconds more.

Now, navigate down to Wipe Cache partition using volume down button. Press power button to select it. In the next screen press OK. You’ve successfully wiped cache partition. Just go back and select Reboot system.

Still Didn’t Work?

Well, I think your Phone is really tough. This tweak should surely work.

As mentioned down in the comments. If you don’t care the UI and app experience.(Well, everyone does!) Just uninstall the updates of the app.

For that again get into the application manager as shown above. Select YouTube and tap on Uninstall updates. Yes, that gets you back to the stock YouTube app. With no great features. But, this is the last alternative I can show you for the Fix. And, this surely works!

Also, turn off automatic app updates. Because, after five minutes the app will try to update itself to the latest version. Yeah, this is the worst alternative. You’ll have to get back to the stock app and also turn off automatic updates.

But, again it surely fixes the error!

Also, try these Fixes

Here is some Fix that you should try out if none of the above worked. It’s definitely some WiFi related problem.

Setting WiFi Proxy Settings to Manual

  • Open WiFi and Long tap on the current WiFi network that you are using.
  • Choose Modify Network Config.
  • Check the Advanced Options and see if the Proxy Setting are set to Manual or None.
  • If it’s None changes it to Manual. That’s it.

The AdFix

  • First off Uninstall YouTube App or Uninstall Updates as you did in the second Fix.
  • Reinstall with the latest version from Play Store.
  • Run the App and skip the Intro. Don’t click on Next.
  • Directly click on the Ad (Ad with Yellow bar on Top). No need to play the whole Ad.
  • After playing Ad go to Subscriptions and play video.

Do inform us down in the comments which fix worked for you. And also, share if some other trick that you might have applied and worked.
