Custom thumb seekbar android

Кастомный UI Slider (SeekBar)

Drawables (9-Patch)

2: SeekBar Progress Drawable

Drawable

Creating Custom SeekBar in Android

SeekBar can be understood as an extension of ProgressBar in Android. You have to just drag the thumb on SeekBar and drag it towards the backward or forward direction and store the current value of progress changed. SeekBar is widely used in different applications ex – Audio player Video Player etc. You can implement the traditional SeekBar provided by Andriod. In this article, we will see how we can customize the android SeekBar. For creating a custom SeekBar first we will design our SeekBar and thumb of seekBar for this we will add layout files in drawable. We can use pictures as a thumb too for that instead of creating a layout we have to just put the picture on the drawable rest things will be the same.

Step by Step Implementation

Step 1: Create a New Project

To create a new project in Android Studio please refer to How to Create/Start a New Project in Android Studio. Note that select Java as the programming language.

Step 2:

Wait for some time, After the build finish, you will see a MainActivity.java file and an XML file inside res -> layout named as activity_main.xml. We will create our custom SeekBar and implement that on our activity_main.xml.

Step 3:

Now right click on drawable -> new -> drawable resource file, name the file as custom_seekbar.xml and specify Root element as layer-list -> click on OK. a new file custom_seekbar.xml will be created

Step 4:

Now in custom_seekbar.xml inside the layer-list add an item and give a shape to it. specify the color, height, corners of the SeekBar. Also, add another item of the same shape and size but you can change the color, left part of SeekBar’s thumb will be of this color.

Step 5:

Now again click on drawable -> new -> drawable resource file, name the file as thumb.xml and specify Root element as shape -> click on OK. a new file thumb.xml will be created. Inside this file give the height, radius, and color of the thumb. these things can be changed. It totally depends upon how you want to design.

Step 6:

Now go to the activity_main.xml create a layout and inside the layout add a SeekBar. Specify the height width of SeekBar and the max progress that you want to use set progress to 0.

This will create a customized Seekbar inside activity_main.xml.

Step 7:

Now open MainActivity.java class Declare objects of SeekBar and TextView, inside onCreate method initialize both objects using findViewById() method. Perform an event of SeekBar change listener that will hold progress value, and by using this event set the progress value inside TextView.

Android SeekBar and Custom SeekBar Examples

September 23, 2017

Android SeekBar allows user to select a value from the given range of values by providing draggable thumb. SeekBar is a subclass of ProgressBar which is used to show progress of user initiated or backend operations.

In this post, details on how to use android seek bar, material styles, custom material styles, SeekBar event handling, custom seek bar, and seek bar custom track, thumb and tickMark are covered.

Using Android SeekBar

SeekBar can be added to layout using SeekBar element. The important attributes that need to be set are max, progress and layout_width. Using max attribute of SeekBar, you can set maximum value so that user can select a value from the range starting from 0 to the maximum value by dragging seek bar thumb. You can set default selected value by setting value for progress attribute which gets changed as user drags the thumb.

Below example layout xml contains SeekBar.

Android SeekBar Style Application Level

Above screen shot shows SeekBar when application theme is set to Theme.AppCompat.Light. SeekBar can be customized at application level to show different colors for seekbar background and progress by defining custom colors for colorControlNormal and colorControlActivate.

Android SeekBar Style Individual

Android platform provides Widget.Material.SeekBar (App compact version of it is Widget.AppCompat.SeekBar) and Widget.Material.SeekBar.Discrete material styles for SeekBar.

Below screen shot shows the appearance of seek bar with Widget.Material.SeekBar.Discrete theme. Widget.Material.SeekBar.Discrete is available from API level 24.

SeekBar discrete material style output.

You can define custom material style for seekbar by inheriting Widget.AppCompat.SeekBar and setting custom values for attributes such as progressBackgroundTint, progressTint, and colorControlActivated.

Below material style for seekbar customizes seekbar color by setting background, progress, and thumb colors.

Android SeekBar Event Listener

SeekBar events can be handled by implementing SeekBar.OnSeekBarChangeListener and setting it to seek bar by calling setOnSeekBarChangeListener method.

You can implement behavior for three types of events such as progress change, seek bar touch start and touch stop events using SeekBar.OnSeekBarChangeListener by implementing onProgressChanged, onStartTrackingTouch, and onStopTrackingTouch methods.

SeekBar current value or seek bar progress can be obtained in onProgressChanged, as seekbar current value is passed as parameter to this method.

Android Custom SeekBar

Android seekbar can be customized by providing your own drawable for seek bar track (seek bar progress), seek bar thumb and seek bar tick mark.

SeekBar custom track or progress drawable

Below drawable xml can be used as drawable for seekbar progress.

You can apply the custom drawable to seek bar using progressDrawable attribute.

SeekBar custom track output.

Seek bar custom thumb

Below drawable xml can be used as seek bar thumb.

Apply the above thumb drawable to seek bar by setting thumb attribute.

Seekbar custom thumb output.

SeekBar custom tickMark

SeekBar tick mark can be customized by defining a drawable xml and applying it to seek bar using tickMark attribute.

Below xml is a drawable xml for customizing seek bar tickMark.
