iOS update and restore errors

Learn how to solve iOS update and restore errors.

Try these steps first

  1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, make sure your Mac is up to date. If you have a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or a PC, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes.
  2. If your device couldn’t be restored and you get a message that «an unknown error occurred [error number],» use these steps.

If you still see the error, try the steps below.

Choose your error number or message

To learn what to do, choose your error:

Update the software on your Mac or PC

If you see error 10, your iOS device might have a newer version of iOS than is supported by your computer. You’ll need to update the software on your Mac or iTunes on Windows before you can update or restore your iOS device.

macOS 10.11 and later:

  1. Disconnect and then reconnect your iOS device to your computer. You might need to unlock your iOS device before it is recognized by your Mac.
  2. When you see a message that says a software update is required to connect to your iOS device, click Install to download and install the software so your Mac can update or restore your iOS device.

If you continue to see error 10, or you don’t see a dialog asking you to update the software on your mac, contact Apple Support.

Make sure that your device can communicate with Apple servers

If you see error 1671, your computer is downloading necessary software. Wait for the download to finish, then try again.

If you see one of the errors below, your computer might not be able to connect to Apple servers or your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  • 17, 1638, 3014, 3194, 3000, 3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3194, 3200
  • «There was a problem downloading the software.»
  • «The device isn’t eligible for the requested build.»

Here’s what to check:

If you see error 4037, your computer is unable to update your device because it’s passcode locked and the device wasn’t unlocked for the update or restore. Unlock your device and try again. Learn what to do if you forgot your passcode.

If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

Cellular Update Failed or Apple Pay Not Available alert

If you see either «Cellular Update Failed» or «Apple Pay requires an Update on this iPhone» alert after an update, learn what to do.

Check your security software

  • If you see error 9, use these steps.
  • If you see errors 2, 4, 6, or 1611, check your third-party security software. Then check your USB connection.
  • If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

Check your USB connections

If you see error 4005, 4013, or 4014, use these steps.

If you see one of the errors below, check your USB connection, USB cable, USB port, or computer:

  • 13, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643–1650
  • 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009
  • An error that includes «invalid response»

Here’s what to check. Try again after each step:

  1. Use the USB cable that came with your device. If you don’t have it, try a different Apple USB cable.
  2. Switch to a different USB port on your computer. Don’t plug into your keyboard.
  3. Switch to a USB port on a different computer.
  4. If you still see the error, check for other USB issues, check your third-party security software, then check your hardware.

If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

Check your hardware

If you see error 53, use these steps.

If you see one of the errors below, you might have a hardware issue:

  • 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 16
  • 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
  • 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, 1669

Here’s what to check. Try again after each step:

  1. If iTunes is already open, quit and reopen it.
  2. Check your third-party security software.
  3. Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your device.
  4. Check for outdated or modified software.

If you still see the error, contact Apple Support.

Check for outdated or modified software

If you see error 1015 or a message that «the required resource can’t be found,» your device might have unauthorized software modifications (jailbreaking). Or you might be trying to install an earlier version of iOS (downgrading).

To restore your device to the latest version of software, use recovery mode on your iPhone or recovery mode on your iPad.

If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

If you lose your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch or think it might be stolen, use Find My and protect your data.

Look for your device on a map

To find your device, sign in to iCloud.com/find. Or use the Find My app on another Apple device that you own.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn’t appear in the list of devices, Find My was not turned on. But you can still protect your account if Find My was not turned on.

Mark as Lost

When you mark your device as lost, you remotely lock it with a passcode, keeping your information secure. This also disables Apple Pay on the missing device. And you can display a custom message with your contact information on the missing device.

Report your missing device to local law enforcement

Law enforcement might request the serial number of your device.

File a Theft and Loss claim

If your missing iPhone is covered by AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, file a claim for an iPhone replacement.

Remotely erase your device

After you erase a device, you can’t track its location, so make sure that you no longer need to search for the device. If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, do not erase your iPhone until your claim has been approved.

Contact your wireless carrier

If the missing device is an iPhone or an iPad with cellular, report your missing device to your wireless carrier. Ask the carrier to disable your account to prevent calls, texts, and data use. And if your device is covered under your wireless carrier plan, file a claim.

Remove your missing device from your account

If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, do not remove your lost iPhone from your account until your claim has been approved.

Go to appleid.apple.com to remove the missing device from your list of trusted devices.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is not available in all countries and regions.

What to do before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.

Before you sell, give away or trade in your device, you should first transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.

You shouldn’t manually delete your contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photos or any other iCloud information while you’re signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID. This would delete your content from the iCloud servers and any of your devices signed in to iCloud.

If you still have your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device, then remove your personal information from your old device.

Transfer information to your new device

If you have a new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can use Quick Start to transfer information automatically from your old device to your new device if you’re using iOS 11 or later. Use iCloud, iTunes or the Finder to transfer information to your new device if you’re using iOS 10 or earlier.

If your phone number will change with your new device, add additional trusted phone numbers to your account to ensure you don’t lose access. If you no longer have access to your old phone number, you can generate a two-factor authentication code on your old device if needed.

Remove your personal information from your old device

  1. If you’ve paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch.
  2. Back up your device.
  3. Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes & App Store.
    • If you’re using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings > [your name]. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.
    • If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Delete from My [device] and enter your Apple ID password. Then go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out.
  4. If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
  5. Go back to Settings and tap General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. If you’ve turned on Find My [device], you may need to enter your Apple ID and password. If your device uses eSIM, choose the option to erase your device and the eSIM profile when asked.
  6. If asked for your device passcode or Restrictions passcode, enter it. Then tap Erase [device].
  7. Contact your network provider for help transferring service to a new owner. If you’re not using a SIM card with your device, you can contact them to get help transferring service to the new owner.
  8. Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.

When you erase your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, Find My [device] and Activation Lock will be turned off.

If you no longer have your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

If the steps above weren’t completed and you no longer have your device, follow these steps:

  1. Ask the new owner to erase all content and settings using the above steps.
  2. If you’re using iCloud and Find My [device] on the device, sign in to iCloud.com/find or the Find My app on another device, select the device, and click Erase. After the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
  3. If you can’t follow either of the above steps, change your Apple ID password. This won’t remove personal information that’s stored on your old device, but it will prevent the new owner from deleting your information from iCloud.
  4. If you’re switching to a non-Apple phone, deregister iMessage.
  5. If you’re using Apple Pay, you can remove your credit or debit cards on iCloud.com. Choose Account Settings to see which devices are using Apple Pay, then click the device. Next to Apple Pay, click Remove.
  6. Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.

If you’re trading in an Android device to Apple

Before sending in an Android device to Apple as a trade-in, make sure you do the following:

  • Back up your data.
  • Erase the device.
  • Remove any SIM cards, memory cards, cases and screen protectors.

Contact your device’s manufacturer if you need help.

Learn more

  • Make a backup of your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch or restore from a backup.
  • Remove all of your cards from Apple Pay.
  • Get help if your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is lost or stolen.
  • Find out about Activation Lock.
  • No matter the model or condition, we can turn your device into something good for you and good for the planet. Find out how to trade in or recycle your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Apple Trade In.

When you tap Erase All Content and Settings, it will erase your device completely, including any credit or debit cards you’ve added for Apple Pay and any photos, contacts, music or apps. It will also turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center and other services. Your content won’t be deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.
